The rapid expansion and advancement of deepfake technology, which is specifically designed to create incredibly lifelike facial imagery and video content, has ignited a remarkable level of interest and curiosity across a multitude of fields, including but not limited to the realms of the entertainment industry, forensic analysis, cybersecurity and the innovative creation of digital characters. By harnessing the latest breakthroughs in deep learning methodologies, especially through the implementation of techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Autoencoders, Few-Shot Learning Strategies, and Transformer Neural Networks, the outcomes achieved in the generation of deepfakes have been nothing short of astounding and transformative. Furthermore, the recent advancements in diffusion models have served to invigorate and catalyze ongoing research efforts in this fascinating domain. At the same time, the ongoing evolution of detection technologies is being developed to counteract the potential for misuse associated with deepfakes, effectively addressing critical concerns that range from political manipulation to the dissemination of fake news and the ever-growing issue of cyberbullying. This comprehensive review paper meticulously investigates the most recent developments in both deepfake generation and detection, including around 400 publications, providing an in-depth analysis of the cutting-edge innovations that are shaping this rapidly evolving landscape. Starting with a thorough examination of systematic literature review methodologies, we embark on a journey that delves into the complex technical intricacies inherent in the various techniques used for deepfake generation, comprehensively addressing the challenges faced, potential solutions available, and the nuanced details surrounding manipulation formulations. Detecting Adversarial Data by Probing Multiple Perturbations Using Expected Perturbation Score

Adversarial detection aims to determine whether a given sample is an adversarial one based on the discrepancy between natural and adversarial distributions. Unfortunately, estimating or comparing two data distributions is extremely difficult, especially in high-dimension spaces. Recently, the gradient of log probability density (a.k.a., score) w.r.t. the sample is used as an alternative statistic to compute. However, we find that the score is sensitive in identifying adversarial samples due to insufficient information with one sample only. In this paper, we propose a new statistic called expected perturbation score (EPS), which is essentially the expected score of a sample after various perturbations. Specifically, to obtain adequate information regarding one sample, we perturb it by adding various noises to capture its multi-view observations. We theoretically prove that EPS is a proper statistic to compute the discrepancy between two samples under mild conditions. In practice, we can use a pre-trained diffusion model to estimate EPS for each sample. Last, we propose an EPS-based adversarial detection (EPSAD) method, in which we develop EPS-based maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) as a metric to measure the discrepancy between the test sample and natural samples. We also prove that the EPS-based MMD between natural and adversarial samples is larger than that among natural samples. PhenoProfiler: Advancing Phenotypic Learning for Image-based Drug Discovery

In the field of image-based drug discovery, capturing the phenotypic response of cells to various drug treatments and perturbations is a crucial step. This process involves transforming high-throughput cellular images into quantitative representations for downstream analysis. However, existing methods require computationally extensive and complex multi-step procedures, which can introduce inefficiencies, limit generalizability, and increase potential errors. To address these challenges, we present PhenoProfiler, an innovative model designed to efficiently and effectively extract morphological representations, enabling the elucidation of phenotypic changes induced by treatments. PhenoProfiler is designed as an end-to-end tool that processes whole-slide multi-channel images directly into low-dimensional quantitative representations, eliminating the extensive computational steps required by existing methods. It also includes a multi-objective learning module to enhance robustness, accuracy, and generalization in morphological representation learning. PhenoProfiler is rigorously evaluated on large-scale publicly available datasets, including over 230,000 whole-slide multi-channel images in end-to-end scenarios and more than 8.42 million single-cell images in non-end-to-end settings. Across these benchmarks, PhenoProfiler consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods by up to 20%, demonstrating substantial improvements in both accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, PhenoProfiler uses a tailored phenotype correction strategy to emphasize relative phenotypic changes under treatments, facilitating the detection of biologically meaningful signals. UMAP visualizations of treatment profiles demonstrate PhenoProfiler’s ability to effectively cluster treatments with similar biological annotations, thereby enhancing interpretability. High-resolution point clouds (HRPCD) anomaly detection (AD) plays a critical role in precision machining and high-end equipment manufacturing. Despite considerable 3D-AD methods that have been proposed recently, they still cannot meet the requirements of the HRPCD-AD task. There are several challenges: i) It is difficult to directly capture HRPCD information due to large amounts of points at the sample level;ii) The advanced transformer-based methods usually obtain anisotropic features, leading to degradation of the representation;iii) The proportion of abnormal areas is very small, which makes it difficult to characterize. To address these challenges, we propose a novel group-level feature-based network, called Group3AD, which has a significantly efficient representation ability. First, we design an Intercluster Uniformity Network (IUN) to present the mapping of different groups in the feature space as several clusters, and obtain a more uniform distribution between clusters representing different parts of the point clouds in the feature space. Then, an Intracluster Alignment Network (IAN) is designed to encourage groups within the cluster to be distributed tightly in the feature space. In addition, we propose an Adaptive Group-Center Selection (AGCS) based on geometric information to improve the pixel density of potential anomalous regions during inference. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of our proposed Group3AD, which surpasses Reg3D-AD by the margin of 5% in terms of object-level AUROC on Real3DAD. Commit messages are natural language descriptions of code changes, which are important for software evolution such as code understanding and maintenance. However, previous methods are trained on the entire dataset without considering the fact that a portion of commit messages adhere to good practice (i.e., good-practice commits), while the rest do not. On the basis of our empirical study, we discover that training on good-practice commits significantly contributes to the commit message generation. Motivated by this finding, we propose a novel knowledge-aware denoising learning method called KADEL. Considering that good-practice commits constitute only a small proportion of the dataset, we align the remaining training samples with these good-practice commits. To achieve this, we propose a model that learns the commit knowledge by training on good-practice commits. This knowledge model enables supplementing more information for training samples that do not conform to good practice. However, since the supplementary information may contain noise or prediction errors, we propose a dynamic denoising training method. This method composes a distribution-aware confidence function and a dynamic distribution list, which enhances the effectiveness of the training process. Experimental results on the whole MCMD dataset demonstrate that our method overall achieves state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper explores a simultaneous tasks offloading and communications (STOC) scheme in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks, supported by the combination of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) and the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Different from the traditional MEC schemes, the proposed scheme concurrently considers the computation and communication capabilities of the MEC networks, which is actually more practical in reality. Specifically, an optimization problem is devised to maximize the weighted sum of the minimum computed task data and communication data, while ensuring the quality of service (QoS) constraints for STOC through joint design of time scheduling, resource allocation, active and passive beamforming, alongside with the UAV trajectory planning. This non-convex problem with strong couplings among variables is challenging to solve directly. Then, a novel alternating optimization method is proposed, leveraging the successive convex approximation (SCA) and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) techniques. We provide sufficient numerical results to validate the effectiveness of the proposed STOC scheme, which demonstrate that the proposed scheme supported by STAR-RIS and UAV outperforms five benchmark schemes in terms of performance gain. It is important to note that the proposed scheme offers a feasible and realistic way for the implementations of STOC in practical MEC networks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

The development of computational pathology lies in the consensus that pathological characteristics of tumors are significant guidance for cancer diagnostics. Most existing research focuses on the inner-contextual information within each WSI yet ignores the possible inter-correlations between slides. As the development of tumors is a continuous process involving a series of histological, morphological, and genetic changes that accumulate over time, the similarities and differences between WSIs across various stages, grades, locations and patients should potentially contribute to the representation of WSIs and deserve to be taken into account in WSI modeling. To verify the advancement of introducing the slide inter-correlations into the representation learning of WSIs, we proposed a generic WSI analysis pipeline SlideGCD that can be adapted to any existing Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) frameworks and improve their performance. With the new paradigm, the prior knowledge of cancer development can participate in the end-to-end workflow, which concurrently initializes and refines the slide representation, as a guide for message passing in the slide-based graph. Extensive comparisons and experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed pipeline across 4 different tasks, including cancer subtyping, cancer staging, survival prediction, and genemutation prediction, with 8 representative SOTA WSI analysis frameworks as backbones. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Visual Style Prompt Learning Using Diffusion Models for Blind Face Restoration

Blind face restoration aims to recover high-quality facial images from various unidentified sources of degradation, posing significant challenges due to the minimal information retrievable from the degraded images. Prior knowledge-based methods, leveraging geometric priors and facial features, have led to advancements in face restoration but often fall short of capturing fine details. To address this, we introduce a visual style prompt learning framework that utilizes diffusion probabilistic models to explicitly generate visual prompts within the latent space of pre-trained generative models. These prompts are designed to guide the restoration process. To fully utilize the visual prompts and enhance the extraction of informative and rich patterns, we introduce a style-modulated aggregation transformation layer. Extensive experiments and applications demonstrate the superiority of our method in achieving high-quality blind face restoration. Traditional cloud computing models struggle to meet the requirements of latency-sensitive applications when processing large amounts of data. As a solution, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) extends computing resources to the edge of the network to reduce processing delays and improve user experience. However, in dynamically changing edge computing environments, effective decision making on whether to offload tasks to edge servers remains a core challenge. For this purpose, we propose MRLATO, an adaptive task offloading mechanism based on Meta Reinforcement Learning (MRL), which exploits a large amount of a priori knowledge of different tasks to achieve fast adaptation. The task offloading process is modelled as multiple Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) and solved using a Sequence to Sequence (Seq2Seq) neural network integrating multi-head attention and recursive task sequencing. It is shown by the experimental results that the proposed method has the lowest latency in all experimental settings and the convergence efficiency is improved by 14.06% compared to the traditional Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm. This research fully demonstrates the significant benefits of the deep integration of MRL with the edge computing domain, providing new optimisation ideas for task offloading decisions. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

This paper highlights a Tibetan syllable component recognization method by using memristors. Firstly, a memristor crossbar array with an external control circuit is designed to present both elevated device density and the potential for parallel computing. Then a syllable component recognization method is implemented to classify syllable into seven types, prefix letter, root letter, superscript letter, subscript letter, vowel letter, suffix letter, and farther suffix letter, matching Tibetan characters by computing total current value in memristor crossbar array. Finally, Tibetan characters is re-encoded in binary according to the last two digits of their Unicode, and input by controlling the voltage in memristor crossbar array. Experiments demonstrate that our method recognizes general Tibetan syllable components.
