This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. The contribution of this article is a complete overview of the principal research directions in rough set theory and its applications in China. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

An improved Bayesian network structure learning algorithm and its application in an intelligent B2C portal

Web Intelligence (WI) is a new and active research field in current AI and IT. intelligent B2C Portals are an important research topic in WI. In this paper, we first investigate and analyze the architecture of a B2C portal for personalized recommendation from the viewpoint of conceptual levels of WI. Aiming at knowledge-level data mining in a B2C portal, we present a new improved learning algorithm of Bayesian Networks, which consists of two major contributions, namely, reducing Conditional Independence (CI) test costs by few lower order CI tests and accelerating search process by means of sort order for candidate parent nodes. Experimental results on benchmark ALARM data sets show that the improved algorithm has high accuracy, and is more efficient in the time performance than other algorithms. Finally, we apply this algorithm to learning Customer Shopping Model (CSM) in an intelligent recommendation system. By a number of experiments on real world data, we find that the recommendation method based on the learned CSM outperforms some traditional ones in rates of coverage and precision. © 2007 - IOS Press and the authors. In component-based software development, it is important to use formal models to describe component composition. However, the existing component composition models generally ignore real-time issues. We present a formal integration model based on Hierarchical Timed Automata (HTA) for real-time software system. We present formal definition of components and different component composition techniques. We then introduce the notions of composable and compatible composition, and use Multiset Labeled Transition Systems to represent the interface actions of HTA to perform compositional verification. This hierarchical and unified framework establishes the foundation for formal analysis of real-time properties of the system. © 2007 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks are often based on omni-sensing and communication models. In contrast, in this paper, we investigate sensor networks with directional sensing and communication capability. Due to the distinct characteristics and potential effects on coverage and connectivity of the network, novel analysis and solutions are demanded. Towards this end, this paper analyses deployment strategies for satisfying given coverage probability requirements with directional sensing models. Moreover, for sensors with directional communication model, we propose methods for checking and repairing the connectivity of the network. We design efficient protocols to implement our idea. A set of experiments are also performed to prove the effectiveness of our solution. Copyright © 2007 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In the field of multi-agent system the research of speech acts is both interesting and important. In the classical theory of speech acts, the sincerity principle is regarded as a compulsory condition. However, the sincerity principle can not be guaranteed in many multi-agent systems because of the existence of lies in the speech interactions among agents. This paper discusses this issue from the perspective of cognition processes of agents, gives the definition of lies based on speech acts and formalizes these contents with LOBA (logic of believable agents). LOBA has extended the work of BDI logic, LORA logic and KARO logic, and introduced so-called cognitive actions which only occur in agents' minds to describe the dynamic cognition processes of believable agents

The knowledge-based product design was analyzed in this paper firstly. Aimed the shortages that the knowledge of the existing system for product design was close and the distributed knowledge couldn't be integrated and shared, a novel distributed knowledge management system framework for product design was proposed. The main layers were studied and the key technologies of system were discussed. Ontology-based knowledge share is proposed. Knowledge ontology and knowledge ontology model are defined in terms of the design knowledge's characteristic. A novel model searching method based on ontology is proposed, where the appropriate parts model was searched through EDCOM array and similarity. Finally a distributed knowledge management system is developed on the basis of prior analysis and about an example about eddy current retarder design based on the prototype system is given. © 2007 IEEE.

In this research, real-time face tracking and gesture recognizing embedded quadruped robot with a tele-operation server is presented. Using ***21 embedded system, this robot transfers MPEG-4 video to tele-operation server which processes image data for gesture recognition and face detection, and human following. The developed quadruped robot has 3 DOF 4 legs and pan-tilt actuators. This system can recognize user' s face and hand motion and serve various music contents to robot user.

Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is a metaheuristic and stochastic search technology, which has been one of the effective tools for solving discrete optimization problems. However, there are two bottlenecks for large-scaled optimization problems: the ACO algorithm needs too much time to convergent and the solutions may not be really optimal. This paper proposes a novel ACO algorithm for the multidimensional knapsack problems (MKP), which employs a new pheromone diffusion model and a mutation scheme. First, in light of the preference to better solutions, the association distances among objects are mined in each iteration with top-k strategy. Then, a pheromone diffusion model based on info fountain of an object is established, which strengthens the collaborations among ants. Finally, an unique mutation scheme is applied to optimizing the evolution results of each step. The experimental results for the benchmark testing set of MKPs show that the proposed algorithm can not only get much more optimal solutions but also greatly enhance convergence speed.

This paper is concerned with the performance comparison of variant two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) and its application to face recognition under robot environments. Face recognition is one of the most important components for human-robot interaction (HRI) technology that naturally interact between human and robot through robot camera, microphone, and various sensors. We demonstrate that the 2DPCA-based approaches show the insensitivity to large variation in illumination and distance variation in comparison to the conventional PCA and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The comprehensive experiments are completed for ETRI face database. The robot platform used in this paper is WEVER, which is a network-based intelligent robot developed at intelligent Robot Research Division in ETRI.

In this paper, the user identification based on face and speaker information obtained from camera and microphone for the intelligent service robot is proposed. For this purpose, we use fisherface method for face recognition. The choice of the fisherface method in this setting is motivated by its insensitivity to large variation in light direction, face pose, and facial expression. Furthermore, we utilize Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) classifier which uses a Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) as feature vector for speaker recognition. The weighted sum method is used to fuse cosine similarity and log- likelihood produced from fisherface and GMM classifier, respectively. The experimental results reveal that the presented fusion method showed a better performance than fisherface and GMM classifier itself through the research robot platform called WEVER developed in ETRI.
