In sedimentology, the integration of intelligent engineering decision-making with edge computing environments aims to furnish engineers and decision-makers with precise, real-time insights into sediment-related issues. This approach markedly reduces data transfer time and response latency by harnessing the computational power of edge computing, thereby bolstering the decision-making process. Concurrently, the establishment of a sediment knowledge graph serves as a pivotal conduit for disseminating sediment-related knowledge in the realm of intelligent engineering decision-making. Moreover, it facilitates a comprehensive exploration of the intricate evolutionary and transformative processes inherent in sediment materials. By unveiling the evolutionary trajectory of life on Earth, the sediment knowledge graph catalyzes a deeper understanding of our planet's history and dynamics. Relationship extraction, as a key step in knowledge graph construction, implements automatic extraction and establishment of associations between entities from a large amount of sedimentary literature data. However, sedimentological literature presents multi-source heterogeneous features, which leads to a weak representation of hidden relationships, thus decreasing the accuracy of relationship extraction. In this article, we propose an attribute-extended relation extraction approach (AERE), which is specifically designed for sedimentary relation extraction scenarios. First, context statements containing sediment entities are obtained from the literature. Then, a cohesive hierarchical clustering algorithm is used to extend the relationship attributes between sediments. Finally, mine the relationships between entities based on AERE. The experimental results show that the proposed model can effectively extract the hidden relations and exhibits strong robustness in dealing with redundant noise before and after sentences, which in turn improves the completeness of the relations between deposits. The design of urban road networks significantly influences traffic conditions, underscoring the importance of informed traffic planning. Traffic planning experts rely on specialized platforms to simulate traffic systems, assessing the efficacy of the road network across various states of modifications. Nevertheless, a prevailing issue persists: many existing traffic planning platforms exhibit inefficiencies in flexibly interacting with the road network's structure and attributes and intuitively comparing multiple states during the iterative planning process. This paper introduces TraSculptor, an interactive planning decision-making system. To develop TraSculptor, we identify and address two challenges: interactive modification of road networks and intuitive comparison of multiple network states. For the first challenge, we establish flexible interactions to enable experts to easily and directly modify the road network on the map. For the second challenge, we design a comparison view with a history tree of multiple states and a road-state matrix to facilitate intuitive comparison of road network states. To evaluate TraSculptor, we provided a usage scenario where the Braess's paradox was showcased, invited experts to perform a case study on the Sioux Falls network, and collected expert feedback through interviews. © 1995-2012 IEEE.

Semen quality assessment is a very important tool for the timely detection and treatment of infertility disorders. Many artificial intelligence methods for sperm image analysis have emerged in recent years. Sperm detection in sperm microscopy is the first step in semen quality assessment. However, the acquisition of sperm electron microscopy images can produce a variety of different background lighting situations. The performance of established methods is susceptible to changes in background illumination. Therefore, a sperm detection method with heterogeneous Laplacian distribution noise background modeling (HLDNBM) is proposed. In this paper the method uses background illumination surface fitting to eliminate the effect of illumination in a single sperm image, and realizes the segmentation of sperm head and sperm tail with different grayscale by upper and lower segmentation threshold surfaces to achieve complete sperm image segmentation and multi-target detection in a single image. This method effectively avoids the degradation of target detection performance caused by sudden changes in illumination in other background modeling methods. Moreover, this method shows strong adaptability for images with different lighting backgrounds, and is friendly to small datasets as well. The experimental results show that the accuracy and sensitivity of the algorithm for sperm detection in images with different grayscale characteristics are very promising, with high universality and robustness. © 2023 IEEE.

Image super-resolution (SR) and disparity estimation are closely related in stereo images, with effective utilization of disparity maps enhancing SR performance. This paper proposes a stereo image super-resolution reconstruction network utilizing disparity estimation and a domain diffusion model. The network integrates disparity estimation with diffusion models for feature summation and domain space construction, enabling interaction between forward and backward diffusion memory units. To further improve reconstructed image quality, we introduce a novel memory unit inspired by long short-term memory concepts. Disparity loss and structural similarity are included in the loss function to achieve more accurate results. After designing a simulation and running it locally on a small network instance, the implementation can be scaled-up via parallel and distributed computing (e.g., a cluster) to cope with massive networks. However, implementation changes can create errors (e.g., parallelism errors), which are difficult to identify since the aggregate behavior of an incorrect implementation of a stochastic network simulation can fall within the distributions expected from correct implementations. In this paper, we propose the first approach that applies machine learning to traces of network simulations to detect errors. Our technique transforms simulation traces into images by reordering the network's adjacency matrix, and then training supervised machine learning models. Our evaluation on three simulation models shows that we can easily detect previously encountered types of errors and even confidently detect new errors. This work opens up numerous opportunities by examining other simulation models, representations (i.e., matrix reordering algorithms), or machine learning techniques.

Recently, digital textbook systems and various exercise support systems have been introduced to educational institutions, and research has been conducted to collect and analyze logs in order to improve teaching and learning. In addition, research has been conducted to incorporate group work into exercises in order to prevent differences in the level of understanding in conceptual modeling lectures, and effective pairing methods have been proposed based on the learners' level of understanding. In the previous studies on pairing methods, logs of learning behaviors such as the results of exercises and the status of reading textbooks as well as dialogues were analyzed and surveyed. Therefore, in this study, we developed a chatbot system that supports learners in preventing the modification of their work and correcting it by incorporating a third party's opinion based on the learner's understanding and discussion status into the discussion.

As an emerging brain-inspired computing method, hyperdimensional computing (HDC) has attracted increasing attention. HDC encodes data into a high-dimensional hypervector and makes predictions based on the similarity comparison of the hypervector. However, the computational overhead of an HDC model increases, and the accuracy decreases as the number of predicted classes increases. Branching has been proposed to address this issue in HDC models, but it also introduces a new challenge: increased memory overhead for storing new branching hypervectors. In this paper, we aim to address this issue by integrating branching with the pruning method in HDC models. To this end, we propose a simple yet effective two-level branching structure that can reduce the memory overhead required by branching hypervectors. In addition, we propose a novel variable-position pruning method capable of removing redundant dimensions from hypervectors at various positions. This can best identify the important dimensions of a hypervector and further mitigate the memory issue caused by the branching structure. Experimental results demonstrate that our two-level branching structure can slightly increase the accuracy across various datasets. With only a 0.5 % accuracy loss, our pruning method can remove more than half of the dimensions, thereby improving the HDC model's inference latency and energy consumption.

Myopia is the most common eye disorder in the world, and posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation, as a myopia correction surgery, has been widely used in clinics due to its reversibility, wide range of correction degree, and retention of the lens adjustment ability. We address the problem of vault prediction, which assists to ensure the safety of this myopia correction surgery. The existing methods need to measure the eye parameters first and then use the regression method, which is very time-consuming and has subjective errors. Thus, we aim to design an automatic deep learning-based method for vault prediction only considering anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images. Specifically, a deep neural network is utilized to extract the image features, and then a regression module is designed to predict the vault. Furthermore, we introduce domain prior supervision into the deep learning framework. Anterior chamber structure segmentation obtained by semi-supervised learning is considered to provide additional structural features. The prediction of auxiliary measurements, which are related to the vault, is designed to deeply supervise the learning process. Experiments on our dataset (465 test samples) show that the proposed method can reduce the mean absolute error by 39.36-57.34 and 7.39-9.20 compared with the multiple regression methods and machine learning-based methods, respectively. These results show that it is promising to predict vault using AS-OCT images without parameter measurement. © 2022 ACM.

Traditional PCR/NGS-based multigene panel testing is time-consuming and costly. Predicting EGFR mutations directly from H&E stained whole slide images (WSIs) can alleviate these limitations. Furthermore, histopathological reports contain valuable textual information that correlates with tissue areas in WSIs. However, recent research mainly analyses EGFR mutation status only from a single modality, ignoring rich information contained in reports. In this paper, we propose a report-guided cross-modal representation learning method for predicting EGFR mutations by WSIs. Specifically, we reconstruct report-level embeddings through exploring intrinsic relationships between diagnostic words in histopathological reports and tissue areas in WSIs. Finally, reconstructed histopathological report embedding and aggregated WSI embedding are fused for final prediction. More importantly, molecular testing report is also introduced as prior supervision information at the training stage to guarantee semantic consistency of fused feature and molecular report embedding. We evaluate our method on the TCGA-EGFR public benchmark dataset and an in-house clinical dataset (USTC-EGFR). Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing approaches in EGFR mutation prediction, highlighting the benefits of cross-modal learning in enhancing feature representational ability. The energy Internet (EI) presents a novel paradigm for renewable energy distribution that utilizes communication and computing technologies to revolutionize the conventional intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and power grid into a structure that provides assistance to open innovation. The EI offers sustainable and bidirectional transmission for the improvement and analysis of energy convention among electric vehicles (EVs) and service providers. To ensure efficient, reliable, and secure operation, EI must be safe from security attacks. Therefore, efficient and secure key negotiation is a significant issue for the EI-based Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) architecture. Thus, to ensure the system's security, we have devised a robust scheme to facilitate a secure key agreement between the entities involved for the secure and efficient renewable energy distribution for the EI-based energy vehicles in V2G. The devised scheme's robustness is solicited through the widely accepted formal random or real (RoR) model. In addition, the informal security analysis is conducted on the devised scheme, which is evident that the designed scheme achieves all the required security features of EI-based ITS. Moreover, the performance evaluation results endorse that the designed scheme achieves the desired security and minimizes the communication, computation, and energy overhead by 29.33%, 27.94%, and 28.08% in comparison to the existing competitive schemes. © 2014 IEEE.
