The development of Decision Support systems (DSS) for several companies operating in sectors such as tourism, healthcare, or others, presents significant challenges due to the nature of their multi-component architecture. A typical DSS consists of a data component, a model component incorporating machine learning and deep learning techniques, and a user interface component, each one requires diverse technologies. This complexity increases development time and effort, hindering the efficient design of DSS tailored to specific domains like tourism, where real-time decision-making is essential. One promising approach to overcome these challenges is the use of Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs). DSLs allow developers to model and generate code more efficiently by providing high-level abstractions suited to the domain. By leveraging DSLs, it is possible to simplify the design process and automate the generation of code or parts of the DSS, thereby reducing the overall complexity and time required for development. This paper proposes a metamodel for designing DSS, specifically for the Smart Tourism sector. The metamodel serves as a foundation for the creation of DSL. The goal is to provide a solution to facilitate the development of DSS for the demands of tourism. The paper outlines the key concepts, approach, and results, presenting the first element of the proposed DSL which is the metamodel capturing the essential components and relationships for DSS in Smart Tourism. © 2024 IEEE.

Skin cancer detection with MobileNet-based transfer learning and MixNets for enhanced diagnosis

Skin cancer poses a significant health hazard, necessitating the utilization of advanced diagnostic methodologies to facilitate timely detection, owing to its escalating prevalence in recent years. This paper proposes a novel approach to tackle the issue by introducing a method for detecting skin cancer that uses MixNets to enhance diagnosis and leverages mobile network-based transfer learning. Skin cancer has diverse forms, each distinguishable by its structural attributes, morphological characteristics, texture, and coloration. The pressing demand for accurate and efficient diagnostic instruments has spurred the investigation of novel techniques. The present study utilizes the ISIC dataset, comprising a validation set of 660 images and a training set of 2637 images. Moreover, the research employs a combination of MixNets and mobile network-based transfer learning as its chosen approach. Transfer learning is a technique that leverages preexisting models to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of the proposed system. Integrating MobileNet and MixNets allows for utilizing their respective functionalities, resulting in a dual-model methodology that enhances the comprehensiveness of skin cancer diagnosis. The results demonstrate impressive performance metrics, with MobileNet and MixNets models, and the proposed approach achieves an outstanding accuracy rate of 99.58%. The above findings underscore the efficacy of the dual-model method in effectively discerning between benign and malignant skin lesions. Moreover, the present study aims to examine the potential integration of emerging technologies to enhance the accuracy and practicality of diagnostics within real-world healthcare settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

This research presents a novel approach to stream-line the configuration of AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) modules using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools. Traditional methods of generating AUTOSAR-compliant ARXML files are time-consuming and require meticulous man-ual input, posing significant challenges for developers. In this study, an AI-driven methodology is introduced to address these challenges. By mapping English descriptions to YAML through a Python script and subsequently converting YAML to Autosar XML (ARXML), this approach conserves tokens and significantly accelerates the AI training process. The AI model, trained on a dataset of 12,000 samples and tested on 3,000 unseen inputs, achieved a 100% accuracy rate in converting descriptions. Additionally, a comprehensive configurator tool and a code generator were developed to facilitate seamless integration and deployment of the generated configurations. The proposed solution not only reduces manual effort but also increases reliability in AUTOSAR configuration, offering a practical tool for developers in the automotive software industry. © 2024 IEEE.

Banks play a pivotal role in generating significant profits through loan operations. However, the challenge lies in accurately identifying genuine loan applicants who are likely to repay their loans. Manual processes are prone to misconceptions, prompting the development of a loan prediction system using deep learning. This system aims to automate the selection of eligible candidates, benefiting both bank staff and applicants by drastically reducing the loan approval timeframe. Two key machine learning algorithms such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are employed in this work for applicant selection. SVM, a popular supervised learning algorithm, creates a decision boundary or hyperplane to segregate classes in n-dimensional space. Conversely, ANN is inspired by biological neural networks, which mimic the organization of neurons in the input layer, hidden and output layers of the human brain. The integration of ANN and SVM in an ensemble model enhances accuracy compared to traditional methods. This collaborative approach ensures precise predictions of loan repayment likelihood based on applicant data and past loan eligibility records. The model's performance is measured using accuracy. The outcomes of the research were promising and the loan prediction system defines the minimum and maximum loan amounts that can be sanctioned to an applicant. By leveraging the strengths of both ANN and SVM, the ensemble model serves as a robust tool for accurately identifying worthy loan applicants, streamlining the loan approval process, and minimizing the risk of default. The accuracy of the algorithm is improved by this method to 91%. © 2024 IEEE.

The conventional Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm is a state-of-the-art trust-region optimization method for solving bundle adjustment problems in the Structure-from-Motion community, which not only takes advantage of the fast convergence of the Gauss-Newton method, but also the stability of the gradient descent method when approaching optimal solutions. However, the damping ratio of LM is simply provided by trial-and-error, which causes slow convergence rate for large-scale problems. This paper proposes the Yamashita-Fukushima LM (YFLM) algorithm to reduce the time complexity for global bundle adjustment, where the damping factor is determined by Yamashita and Fukushima’s method. YFLM dynamically calculates a more reasonable and optimal damping ratio according to the newest reprojection error. The experimental results show that the YFLM algorithm outperforms the conventional LM algorithm for most public bundle adjustment datasets. Besides this, the convergence of the YFLM algorithm is also evaluated with different σ∈(0,2]. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA+), into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one's undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive 'failuresy' through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding TLA+ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in TLA+ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. Conclusions: Our initial efforts suggest that 84% of our students had a positive experience in our formal methods course. Logic locking proposed to protect integrated circuits from serious hardware threats has been studied extensively over a decade. In these years, many logic locking techniques have been proven to be broken. The state-of-the-art logic locking techniques, including the prominent corrupt and correct (CAC) technique, are resilient to satisfiability (SAT)-based and removal attacks, but vulnerable to structural analysis attacks. To overcome this drawback, this paper introduces an improved version of CAC, called CAC 2.0, which increases the search space of structural analysis attacks using obfuscation. To do so, CAC 2.0 locks the original circuit twice, one after another, on different nodes with different number of protected primary inputs using CAC, while hiding original protected primary inputs among decoy primary inputs. This paper also introduces an open source logic locking tool, called HIID, equipped with well-known techniques including CAC 2.0. Our experiments show that CAC 2.0 is resilient to existing SAT-based, removal, and structural analysis attacks. To achieve this, it increases the number of key inputs at most 4× and the gate-level area between 30.2% and 0.8% on circuits with low and high complexity with respect to CAC. © 2024 IEEE.
