Finding information about people using search engines is one of the most common activities on the Web. However, search engines usually return a long list of Web pages, which may be relevant to many namesakes, especially given the explosive growth of Web data. To address the challenge caused by name ambiguity in Web people search, this paper proposes a novel graph-based framework, GRAPE (abbr. a graph-based framework for disambiguating people appearances in Web search). In GRAPE, people tag information (e.g., people name, organization, and email address) surrounding the queried people name is extracted from the search results, a graph-based unsupervised algorithm is then developed to cluster the extracted tags, where a new method, cohesion, is introduced to measure the importance of a tag for clustering, and each final cluster of tags represents a unique people entity. Experimental results show that our proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art Web people name disambiguation approaches.

The session, which is being held on the occasion of SIGCAS' 40th Anniversary, will provide a historical perspective on curricular efforts to address the profound social and ethical impact of the rapid development of computer technology since its widespread deployment in the 1960's. Presenters, who represent veteran and newer members of SIGCAS, are in the process of developing a variety of innovative approaches to incorporating computer ethics and social impact issues into their computer science curricula, and will discuss their efforts to engage students in the study of the larger context of computing. Audience members will be encouraged to contribute experiences and ideas, and to learn how their involvement in SIGCAS can further the development of curriculum in this area.

The problem of choosing among candidate wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that send data to a fusion center to detect a binary phenomenon in nature is considered. Viewing the syst.m as a communication channel in which nature is the transmitter and the fusion center is the receiver, it is intuitive to prefer the syst.m that provides the highest mutual information between the phenomenon and the received signal at the fusion center. This paper reviews existing literature on this criterion and provides complementary results showing that, under a Bayesian framework, a WSN that provides equal or higher mutual information than other WSNs results in equal or better detection performance only in very restrictive settings. This paper also presents a bound on the detection performance of a WSN having the highest mutual information, and it is shown that the bound becomes tight as the mutual information approaches its maximum. Similar conclusions are obtained in the Neyman-Pearson framework.

Web-based applications require a flexible adaptation to the changing environment. One of the elements to achieve this aim is based on the flexible use of interaction protocols. Another key element is the separation between business process logic and interaction actions, so that runtime-depending parameters can influence the selection and parametrization of the appropriate interaction protocol. This opens the necessity of verifying whether the implementation of a given business process logic is "compatible" with a given interaction protocol. In this paper we adopt the use of ontologies for the description of the information to be exchanged between a workflow (implementing a business process) and a role (view of an interaction protocol) and show how the use of Petri net analysis techniques can be applied for proving whether a given workflow and a given role are compatible in the DENEB environment, a platform for the Development and Execution of Web processes.

In wireless multihop networks communication between two-end nodes is carried out by hopping over multiple short wireless links. Traditional CSMA/CA based media access control does not work well in a multihop scenario, since transmitters are often out of reach of other users' sensing range. Therefore TDMA seems to be a more promising solution. Several algorithms may be found in the literature for scheduling TDMA transmissions for these networks. These algorithms try to determine the optimal scheduling, in order to increase the capacity and reduce the delay for a given network topology. In our previous work, a TDMA scheduling algorithm has been proposed that schedules the transmissions in a fair manner and takes into account the communication requirements of the active flows of the network. In this research effort, we compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with several TDMA scheduling algorithms, in terms of frame length, throughput and fairness. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm exhibits improved performance compared to the other solutions, not only in terms of fairness, but also in terms of throughput.

Informative Vector Machine (IVM) is an efficient fast sparse Gaussian process's (GP) method previously suggested for active learning. It greatly reduces the computational cost of GP classification and makes the GP learning close to real time. We apply IVM for man-made structure classification (a two class problem). Our work includes the investigation of the performance of IVM with varied active data points as well as the effects of different choices of GP kernels. Satisfactory results have been obtained, showing that the approach keeps full GP classification performance and yet is significantly faster (by virtue if using a subset of the whole training data points).

Operating syst.ms is a fundamental topic underlying many modern disciplines, including computing, telematics, and control engineering. Moreover, operating syst.ms is one of the core courses considered under the most important curricula recommendations. The learning process in this area involves both a theoretical and a practical part that students have to learn and put into practice. To reinforce operating syst.ms fundamentals, simulation tools and instructional operating syst.ms have been proposed. However, few of these tools address a learning approach that permits one to work with real operating syst.ms while supporting an active learning methodology that integrates theory and practice. This paper applies generative learning methods and Web-based applications to operating syst.ms courses. Webgene OS is presented as an experimental learning syst.m that leads students through a more active participation in the learning process. Webgene OS combines the universal connectivity of Web technologies with the educational theory provided by the generative learning methods. The syst.m allows students to send their syst.m programs using Web forms, execute them in a native operating syst.m, and receive their results and feedback information through Web browsers. The benefits of WebgeneOS were evaluated by comparing students' grades. The evaluation involved students attending operating syst.ms courses during the 2002-2003, 2003-2004, and 2004-2005 academic years. Students using Webgene OS improved their grades by about 13%. Moreover, the syst.m offered a well-balanced formation between the theoretical and the practical learning outcomes. Overall, this paper made evident that Web technologies and generative learning methods help students in their learning process

Although structural constraints such as model order and time delay have been incorporated in the continuous time syst.m identification since its origin, the constraints on the estimated model parameters were rarely enforced. This paper proposes a continuous time syst.m identification approach with constraints. It shows that by incorporating physical parameter information known a priori as hard constraints, the traditional parameter estimation schemes are modified to minimize a quadratic cost function with linear inequality constraints. Using the structure of Frequency Sampling Filters as the vehicle, the paper shows that the constraints can be readily imposed on continuous time frequency response estimation and step response estimation. in particular, a priori knowledge in both time-domain and frequency domain is utilized simultaneously as the constraints for the optimal parameter solution. A Monte-Carlo simulation study with 100 noise realization is used to demonstrate the improvement of the estimation results in terms of continuous time frequency response and continuous time step response. The resilient packet ring (RPR) IEEE 802.17 is a new medium access control (MAC) protocol for high-speed ring networks. In order to achieve fairness among nodes, a fairness algorithm is employed at each RPR node. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for fair rate calculation in the standard RPR aggressive fairness algorithm in parking lot scenario. Our approach is to model the fair rate calculation by a non-linear discrete-time low-pass filter. We verify our model by simulation results and analyze the convergence of the fairness algorithm. Further, the effect of various parameters on convergence time is investigated.
