Control systems have assumed an increasingly important role in the development and advancement of modern civilization and technology. Practically, every aspect of day-to-day activities is affected by some type of control system. Thus, the space-vector technique has become a popular pulse width technique (PWM) for three-phase inverters in applications such as control of AC induction and permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Digital control structures eliminate drifts, solve complex mathematical equations and by using a programmable processor, they can be easily upgraded for new control algorithms. Digital signal processors (DSPs) go further; their high performance allows them to perform high resolution control and minimize control loop delays. These technological improvements supported by artificial neural networks (ANN) have enabled the development of really effective AC drive control with ever lower power dissipation hardware and ever more accurate control structures.

Many studies about restoring blurred images have been performed. But most of them dealt with restoration of one blurred image. However, when the object is observed several times, the restored image using the several observed images is better than the restored images using each observed image. Therefore, this paper proposes a method of restoring the several observed images of the same object. The following three processes are necessary in order to obtain a good restored image: (1) estimating the parameters of both blur process and original image model, (2) restoring via the estimated parameters, and (3) adjusting the position between the observed images. This paper deals with out-of-focus blurred images. The parameters of the blurred images are estimated by means of the characteristic of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) spectrum, and the parameters of the original image model are estimated by fitting the auto-covariance function of the original image model to the sample autocovariance function of the blurred image. The iterative restoring method is derived based on the Bayes rule. In our computer simulation of both blurred images, which are generated by known blur process, and the real out-of-focus blurred images, the restored images using the several blurred images are satisfactory because the restoration using several blurred images compensates for the lost information of the images. These results are explained by the DCT spectrum.

We discuss adaptability of evolutionary computations in dynamic environments. We introduce two classes of dynamic environments which are utilizing the notion of constraint satisfaction problems: changeover and gradation. The changeover environment is a problem class which consists of a sequence of the constraint networks with the same nature. On the other hand, the gradation environment is a problem class which consists of a sequence of the constraint networks such that the sequence is associated with two constraint networks, i. e., initial and target, and all constraint networks in the sequence metamorphosis from the initial constraint network to the target constraint network. We compare coevolutionary genetic algorithms with SGA in computational simulations. Experimental results on the above dynamic environments confirm us the effectiveness of our approach, i.e., coevolutionary genetic algorithm.

This paper discusses speech recognition based on a new statistical phoneme segment model which is trained by phoneme parameters derived from automatically extracted phoneme segments. The proposed system operates as follows. In preprocessing before recognition, the phoneme boundaries are detected by segmentation. The phonemes are discriminated using a stochastic phoneme segment model, and a phoneme segment lattice with scores is constructed. Next the speech recognition is performed by matching of symbol sequences to dictionary items. The segmentation system that is employed can infer phoneme boundaries with high accuracy. This helps to eliminate unnecessary parameters, leaving the feature parameters which are effective in separating phonemes. In other words, the phoneme recognition problem in continuous speech can be reduced to a discrimination problem and thus a speaker-independent model can be constructed from a relatively small number of training data. The stochastic phoneme segment model is trained with training samples extracted from a phoneme-balanced word set of 4920 words uttered by 10 speakers. In a recognition experiment with 6709 words uttered by 63 nontraining speakers, a recognition rate of 92.6% was obtained as the average for all speakers, using a word dictionary of 212 words.

Motor drives are traditionally designed with relatively inexpensive analog components. The weaknesses of analog systems are their susceptibility to temperature variations and the component aging. Another difficulty is upgrading the system for new needs. Digital control structures eliminate drifts, solve complex mathematical equations and, by using a programmable processor, can be easily upgraded for new control algorithms. Digital signal processors (DSP) go further; their high performance allows them to perform high resolution control and minimize control loop delays. By the help of their fast processor which works parallel, many complicated control algorithms can be implemented easily. With the importance of digital control structures, it was used a TMS320C50 processor board to implement the dynamic speed controller to induction motor. Also, it was used to increase the performance a HONN (high order neural network) structure in the ANN (artificial neural network) architecture in a very short time.

We report on the demonstration of precise and high-speed ablation etching of GaN films using high-intensity femtosecond laser at 800 nm. This ablation etching process is based on the two-photon absorption process of the GaN. It is found that there is no Ga layer formation on the ablated surface of the GaN.

The adsorption kinetics and orientational ordering of 4′−n−octyl−4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid crystal films evaporated onto photosensitive poly(vinyl-cinnamate) (PVCN) substrates were investigated by surface optical second-harmonic generation. The adsorption rate of the first monolayer decreases with increasing degree of photochemical modification of the polymer. The in-plane orientational anisotropy of the 8CB films grown on unidirectionally photopolymerized PVCN substrates is considerably lower than the intrinsic surface orientational anisotropy of these substrates, which can explain the generally found weak surface anchoring of liquid crystals on PVCN alignment layers.
