NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF DC GLOW-DISCHARGE USING SELF-CONSISTENT BEAM MODEL

Calculations are presented of helium dc glow discharges using a beam model, in which beam electrons represent nonequilibrium electron transport;cold electrons and ions are treated with an equilibrium continuum model. Calculated current densities ranged from 4.7 muA/(***2) (near the normal glow conditions) to 290 muA/(cm2. Torr2) (abnormal regime). High-density plasmas appeared in the negative glow;the peak density occurred at the position where the electric field changed from negative to positive. Calculations were also made using a continuum model with the local field approximation for electron transport: high-plasma density and electric field reversal were not predicted by the model. Calculations using the beam model show good agreement with recent experiments except at high current densities, where experiments showed complex phenomena.

LIGHT IRRADIATION EFFECTS ON IMPURITY DOPING IN ZNSE BY PHOTOASSISTED MOLECULAR-BEAM EPITAXY

We have investigated light irradiation effects on donor and acceptor impurity doping in photoassisted MBE growth of ZnSe. Li and N were chosen as acceptor impurities, and Ga and Cl as donor impurities. A He-Cd laser with a wavelength of 441.6 nm (250 MW/cm2) was used as an irradiation source. Bound exciton emissions of neutral acceptor (I-1(S)) or neutral donor (I2) were observed in photoluminescence spectra. The binding energies of I-1(S) and I2 of the irradiated epilayers are the same as those of the nonirradiated epilayers. The intensities of bound exciton emissions of Li, N and Cl were decreased by the irradiation, and that of Ga was increased. It was revealed that the changes in the intensities were not attributable to the surface-stoichiometry change by the irradiation. The increase and decrease in the intensities are discussed on the basis of photodesorption of impurity atoms during photoassisted MBE growth of ZnSe.

He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

A difference scheme was proposed to calculate glow discharges with a time step DELTAt that is not limited by the inequality DELTAt < epsilon0/e\mu(e)N\, where epsilon0 is the permittivity in free space, e is the unit charge, mu(e) is the electron mobility and N is the electron density. Calculations were made with a beam model for helium dc glow discharges. The model predicted high-density cold electrons in the negative glow. Calculations were made with a DELTAt which was 50 times larger than the one limited by the above inequality for the proposed scheme; the value of DELTAt could be determined from a physical point of view.

This paper proposes a coordinate dynamic control method for the transfer of a common heavy object by several wheeled mobile robots. The coupler, which comprises an active prismatic link and a passive rotary joint, is installed on each robot so that even an ordinary nonholomonic mobile robot with inferior mobility can correctly manipulate the object. A hierarchical coordinative control system composed of a leader and other staff robots is designed to synchronously control the motions of the robots under severe dynamic interactions. The leader robot successively defines the desired motion of the object along its reference trajectory and broadcasts the information to the staff robots. Each staff robot controls the motions of its own body and the onboard prismatic link so as to achieve the desired object behavior without sideways slippages. When the prismatic link approaches the limit for its movement, the staff robot requests the leader to temporarily modify the desired behavior of the object. The control algorithm is formulated on the basis of the kinematics and the dynamics of the wheeled mobile robot. Simulation results illustrate the validity of the method.

For two years he was employed in the Power Dispatching Centre in Warsaw/Poland. Later after gaining some field experience in several power plants he did a postgraduate study at Warsaw University of Technology where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1979. In the same year he joined the Electrical Faculty of Warsaw University of Technology where he is presently employed as a professor and head of the power system protection and control group. A study of power system transient stability enhancement through effective use of static VAR compensator is presented. It is shown that optimal state‐variable control can be approximately realized as a simple closed‐loop control based on locally measurable electric quantities. In order to make this regulation more effective and insensitive to the changes of the network parameters and loading condition it is proposed to use simple adaptive control with dynamic gain tuned by additional control loops. Tests done for two‐machine and multi‐machine systems have confirmed the validity and robustness of the proposed control method. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1983 and is presently pursuing a master's degree in engineering management at Old Dominion University. Mr. Luke is experienced as a test engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (1978–1989) and as a reliability/quality engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment Norfolk (1989-Present). Currently he is the group leader of the RMA/QA group for the AN/SQQ-89(V) Antisubmarine Warfare System at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment Norfolk. Mr. Luke is a member of ASNE IEEE (Reliability Society) and ASQC and is an ASQC certified quality engineer and reliability engineer. Derya Alasya Jacobs:is an assistant professor in the Engineering Management Department at Old Dominion University (ODU). She has a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D in engineering management from the University of Missouri-Rolla. Prior to joining ODU Dr. Jacobs worked as a research engineer at the Center for Technology Transfer and Economic Development at the University of Missouri-Rolla. During the same period she served as a consultant in software development for Missouri Enterprise Rolla Missouri. As technology advances and our dependency on software increases, the requirement to develop the correct means to improve quality in both the deveiopment phase and the maintenance phase of software life cycle support becomes increasingly significant. The focus of this paper is on the dilemma facing software engineering in maintaining quality within the constraints of the maintenance phase. The paper further proposes that the software maintenance process can also be analvzed and improved using statistical process control (SPC) techniques. The methods discussed in this paper have been proposed for use in the Software Maintenance project at NUWC Detachment Norfolk. Upon successful testing at NUWC Detachment Norfolk, they will be forwarded to the AN/SQQ-89(V) (interagencv) Software Quality Evaluation Committee for use by other agencies which are developing and maintaining AN/SQQ-89(V) software.
