In neurosurgery, effects of deformation should be considered to avoid damaging brain tissues. The goal of this study is to develop an automatic path planner considering the deformation of brain tissues. This paper shows a scheme which combines FEM (Finite Element Method) and an optimization method for optimization of retraction in order to approach a deep part of a brain. Also, evaluations of two optimization results are discussed. One optimization is for retraction of a simple shape model for comparing two solvers, Pattern Search and Genetic Algorithm. Pattern Search Algorithm obtained maximum view size for the simple model when the principal stress of the tissue is not more than the threshold 500 (Pa). The other optimization is for retraction of a brain fissure model. Based on the result of the simple shape model, Pattern Search Algorithm is used for this optimization. It successfully generated optimal position and posture of a spatula for opening the fissure model which has same mechanical property with the human brain. These results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper proposes a system identification method for single-input single-output linear time invariant continuous systems only using one-shot closed-loop transient data. The method consists of two methods based on an integral-equation and a direct least-squares approach, respectively, and the former is used as a preprocessing step for the latter. The validity of our proposed method is shown by numerical examples in which the continuous-time transfer functions of a non-minimum phase plant and an unstable plant are identified with the method and their evaluation is achieved. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper presents a new navigation system consisting of a resource-constrained rover and landers for planetary long-range exploration. During the exploration, they communicate with each other using radio and the rover receives signals from the landers which contain Angle of Arrival (AOA) data. The rover estimates its position using AOA data. Although obtaining AOA data generally requires a complex device and is difficult to apply to navigation for small rovers. In this study, we implement AOA-based navigation for a resource-constrained rover by rotating a directional antenna such as the high-gain antenna of the landers. In this case, since the rover obtains signals containing AOA data intermittently, we employ an event-driven extended Kalman filter to implement real-time navigation. Our proposed method has the advantage that the rover does not need navigation cameras or sun sensors, and it is therefore suitable for resource-constrained rovers. We developed a small rover and several landers, and conducted experiments in a wide range of Black Rock Desert in America, using the small rover and the landers to obtain the experimental data of AOA which is difficult to simulate. The experimental data are used in numerical simulation. We also validate some cases where there is one lander. These results show the effectiveness of our proposed navigation system using AOA data from the landers in long-range exploration. © 2014 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Digital home business is a large potential market for which ACEMIND European collaborative project intends to provide a set of consistent solutions to enhance the local network management in home and small enterprises. These networks are typically constituted by some tens of devices connected to each other via a set of wired and wireless technologies. The deployment of such networks has been intensive in Europe in the last decade and will continue in the future. However common end-users still suffer from complicated installation, operation or maintenance. Recent progress has been made to integrate heterogeneous connectivity into a single network. A proof of concept has been shown thanks to European collaborative project OMEGA and the hybrid network demonstrator has led to an IEEE standard and available commercial products. The goal of ACEMIND project is to enrich this initial concept with new features and services such as energy efficiency, packets load balancing or anomaly detection. Another target is to integrate future products using new transmission technologies. Then, using a unique user-friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface), it will be possible to monitor and manage the home network with a large range of services such as energy optimization, UHD TV or wellness.

Many surveys show that, the proportion of Chinese tourists using tourism websites to search for tourism information soars in recent years. The quality of Japanese travel websites plays a very important role to attract Chinese tourists traveling to Japan. Take several travel websites of the Nagoya as example, we do some research about how to attract more Chinese tourists via website for Nagoya, the content of this paper is arranged as follows: firstly we analyzes the disadvantage of Nagoya tourism websites, then puts forward some recommendations based on the analysis;and combine the actual needs of Chinese tourists, we designs a reference sample for Nagoya's tourism website cover the aspect of content, function and form.

Dynamic pricing (a.k.a. real-time pricing) is a method of invoking a response in demand pricing electricity at hourly (or more often) intervals. Several studies have proposed dynamic pricing models that maximize the sum of the welfares of consumers and suppliers under the condition that the supply and demand are equal. They assume that the cost functions of suppliers are convex. In practice, however, they are not convex because of the startup costs of generators. On the other hand, many studies have taken startup costs into consideration for unit commitment problems (UCPs) with a fixed demand. The Lagrange multiplier of the UCP, called convex hull pricing (CHP), minimizes the uplift payment that is disadvantageous to suppliers. However, CHP has not been used in the context of demand response. This paper presents a new dynamic pricing model based on CHP. We apply CHP approach invented for the UCP to a demand response market model, and theoretically show that the CHP is given by the Lagrange multiplier of a social welfare maximization problem whose objective function is represented as the sum of the customer's utility and supplier's profit. In addition, we solve the dual problem by using an iterative algorithm based on the subgradient method. Numerical simulations show that the prices determined by our algorithm give sufficiently small uplift payments in a realistic number of iterations.

This paper presents development of a quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV (Vertical Takeoff and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which is composed of four rotors and a fixed wing. The conventional VTOL UAVs have a drawback in the accuracy of the attitude control in stationary hovering because they were developed based on a fixed-wing aircraft and they used the control surfaces, such as aileron, elevator, and rudder for the attitude control. To overcome such a drawback, we developed a quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV. The quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV realizes high accuracy in the attitude control with four rotors like a quad rotor helicopter and achieves level flight like a fixed-wing airplane. The remarkable characteristic of the developed quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV is that it does not use any control surfaces even in the level flight. This paper shows the design concept of the developed UAV and experimental verification of all flight modes including hovering, transition flight and level flight.

This article is concerned with global asymptotic stability (GAS) of dynamical networks. The case when subsystems are integral input-to-state stable (iISS) has been recognized as notoriously difficult to deal with in the literature. In fact, the lack of energy dissipation for large input denies direct application of the small-gain argument for input-to-state stable (ISS) subsystems. Here for networks consisting of iISS subsystems it is demonstrated that a two-phase approach allows us to make use of the ISS small-gain argument by separating a trajectory into a transient and a subsequent ISS-like phase. In contrast to the previous iISS results, the two-phase approach immediately leads to a sufficiency criterion for GAS of general nonlinear networks, which is given in a matrix-like form (order condition).
