Methane and nitrous oxide emissions from municipal wastewater treatment plants in China:A plant-level and technology-specific study

Wastewater treatment is an important source of greenhouse gases(GHGs).Yet large uncertainties remain in the quantification of GHG emissions from municipal wastewater treatment plants(MWWTPs)in China.A high-resolution and technology-specific emission inventory is still lacking to support mitigation strategies of *** we develop a plant-level and technology-based MWWTP emission inventory for China covering 8703 plants and 19 treatment technology categories by compiling and harmonizing the most up-to-date facility-level ***'s methane(CH_(4))and nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)emissions from MWWTPs in 2020 are estimated to be 150.6 Gg and 22.0 Gg,respectively,with the uncertainty range of-30%to 37%and-30%to 26%at 95%confidence *** find an emission inequality across cities,with the richest cities emitting two times more CH_(4)and N_(2)O per capita from municipal wastewater treatment than the poorest *** emitted CH_(4)and N_(2)O are dominated by Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic-,Sequencing Batch Reactor-,Oxidation Ditch-,and Anoxic/Oxic-based MWWTPs of less than 20 years *** the relatively young age structure of China's MWWTPs,the committed emissions highlight the importance of reducing on-site GHG emissions by optimization of operating conditions and innovation *** emission differences among our estimates,previous studies,and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines are largely attributed to the uncertainties in emission factors,implying the urgent need for more plant-integrated measurements to improve the accuracy of emission accounting.

This paper introduces a new variational Gaussian filtering approach for estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamic system. We first assume that the predictive distribution of the state is Gaussian and derive an iterative method for updating the state posterior in the natural parameter space through KullbackLeibler divergence minimization. The obtained update rule is the same as that of the conjugate-computation variational inference technique in Bayesian learning. The derivation here is simpler and more insightful. We then impose a Wishart prior on the inverse of the state prediction covariance to take into account the impact of approximating the state predictive distribution using a Gaussian density on the state posterior estimation. The prediction covariance is identified jointly with the state using variational inference and the established state posterior update rule to achieve the desired Gaussian filtering. Simulation study examines the performance of the proposed filtering framework in target tracking based on bearing and range measurements. © 2024 ISIF.

Considering the constant growth and evolution of technology, being able to secure data is a challenge. This is why researchers find this a top research topic. Cyber-Physical systems are complex, large-scale systems that can be found in domains like healthcare, transportation, industrial controls systems or smart grids. Having many components that interact with each other, we can observe here the challenge in maintaining a secure environment for the data as data tampering or data extraction can occur, for example, in the actual transportation of data from one device to another. The main focus of this paper is to give an answer if blockchain technology provides a solution in building a secure network. We give a short review of the related work regarding blockchain integration in large-scale systems like Cyber-Physical systems. It was also briefly analyzed the layered structure of a blockchain and discussed some solutions for each layer. We then discussed about consensus algorithms for validation and authentication process. In general, consensus algorithms are implemented to assure the validation process of the nodes in a network. In this paper we tried to analyze and propose a model that offers an extra layer of security by adding the authentication step. In this way, the nodes that are validated are also considered trusted nodes in the network.

Clutter Suppression Interference (CSI) is a common radar signal processing method, which efficiently suppresses ground clutter interference in radar received echoes and can greatly improve the signal-to-noise ratio of airborne synthetic aperture radar ground motion target indication (SAR/GMTI). However, the implementation of the clutter suppression algorithm in engineering is difficult because of the large number of filtering power coefficients to be calculated in real time. Based on this research background, this paper models the ground clutter of airborne radar, analyzes the principles and performance of three clutter suppression algorithms, CSI, ACSI and median cancellation ACSI, and performs engineering implementation. From the engineering experimental results, it can be seen that all three algorithms can improve the airborne radar signal-to-noise ratio and thus improve the recognition capability of moving targets, among which the median pair cancellation ACSI algorithm has the lowest false alarm probability and the greatest performance improvement. © 2023 IEEE.

Blood is vital for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to all body parts as it circulates through arteries and veins. It removes carbon dioxide, regulates body temperature, and maintains the body's immune system. Individuals constantly need blood and its derivatives to save their lives and improve their health through medical treatments and surgical operations. Liver diseases are one of the diseases that affects the health of individuals and requires blood to continue living. These diseases cause significant damage to people's health, and early diagnosis plays a crucial role in saving lives. In this paper, machine learning algorithms (support vector machine and random forest) are involved in detecting liver diseases and determining whether donors are suitable to donate blood from blood values. This paper is applied research that found that the performance measures of the random forest algorithm achieved excellent performance in identifying suitable people to donate blood. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

Multi-modal histological image registration tasks pose significant challenges due to tissue staining operations causing partial loss and folding of *** neural network(CNN)and generative adversarial network(GAN)are pivotal inmedical image ***,existing methods often struggle with severe interference and deformation,as seen in histological images of conditions like Cushing’s *** argue that the failure of current approaches lies in underutilizing the feature extraction capability of the discriminator *** this study,we propose a novel multi-modal registration approach GAN-DIRNet based on GAN for deformable histological image *** begin with,the discriminators of two GANs are embedded as a new dual parallel feature extraction module into the unsupervised registration networks,characterized by implicitly extracting feature descriptors of specific ***,modal feature description layers and registration layers collaborate in unsupervised optimization,facilitating faster convergence and more precise ***,experiments and evaluations were conducted on the registration of the Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology database(MNIST),eight publicly available datasets of histological sections and the Clustering-Registration-Classification-Segmentation(CRCS)dataset on the Cushing’s *** results demonstrate that our proposed GAN-DIRNet method surpasses existing approaches like DIRNet in terms of both registration accuracy and time efficiency,while also exhibiting robustness across different image types.

Refined composite multi-scale dispersion entropy(RCMDE),as a new and effective nonlinear dynamic method,has been applied in the field of medical diagnosis and fault *** this paper,we first introduce RCMDE into the field of underwater acoustic signal processing for complexity feature extraction of ship radiated noise,and then propose a novel classification method for ship-radiated noise based on RCMDE and k-nearest neighbor(KNN),termed *** results of a comparative experiment show that the proposed RCMDE-KNN classification method can effectively extract the complexity features of ship-radiated noise,and has better classification performance under one and two scales than the other three classification methods based on multi-scale permutation entropy(MPE)and KNN,multi-scale weighted-permutation entropy(MW-PE)and KNN,and multi-scale dispersion entropy(MDE)and KNN,termed MPE-KNN,MW-PE-KNN,and *** is proved that the RCMDE-KNN classification method for ship-radiated noise is feasible and effective,and can obtain a very high recognition rate.

Learning behavior in legged robots presents a significant challenge due to its inherent instability and complex constraints. Recent research has proposed the use of a large language model (LLM) to generate reward functions in reinforcement learning, thereby replacing the need for manually designed rewards by experts. However, this approach, which relies on textual descriptions to define learning objectives, fails to achieve controllable and precise behavior learning with clear directionality. In this paper, we introduce a new video2reward method, which directly generates reward functions from videos depicting the behaviors to be mimicked and learned. Specifically, we first process videos containing the target behaviors, converting the motion information of individuals in the videos into keypoint trajectories represented as coordinates through a video2text transforming module. These trajectories are then fed into an LLM to generate the reward function, which in turn is used to train the policy. To enhance the quality of the reward function, we develop a video-assisted iterative reward refinement scheme that visually assesses the learned behaviors and provides textual feedback to the LLM. This feedback guides the LLM to continually refine the reward function, ultimately facilitating more efficient behavior learning. Experimental results on tasks involving bipedal and quadrupedal robot motion control demonstrate that our method surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art LLM-based reward generation methods by over 37.6% in terms of human normalized score. More importantly, by switching video inputs, we find our method can rapidly learn diverse motion behaviors such as walking and running. © 2024 The Authors.

The intensification of global climate change has brought about more and more extreme weather events, which, combined with the stochastic and volatile nature of renewable energy sources, have caused serious impacts on the power system, and consequently, preserving the supply and promoting the consumption have become two major problems in the power system in terms of the balance of power. Based on this, the extreme scenarios in the high proportion of renewable energy connected to the power system are studied. Firstly, the difference and connection between extreme scenarios and extreme events and the worst scenarios are clarified, the definition and characteristics of extreme scenarios are given, classification methods and identification methods of extreme scenarios are analyzed;subsequently, the generation methods of extreme scenarios are studied for the small-sample characteristics of extreme scenarios;furthermore, the application of extreme scenarios in the scheduling of the power system, flow analysis, and planning is summarized;Finally, countermeasures for extreme scenarios are proposed, and the direction of subsequent research on extreme scenarios is pointed out, which provides ideas for the subsequent construction of a flexible and reliable power system with balanced supply and demand. © 2023 IEEE.
