A QOE-AWARE STRATEGY FOR ENERGY SAVING IN A FOG-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING system

In the Fog-based Environmental Monitoring system (FEMS), the frequency at which Internet of Thing (IoT) devices upload monitoring data and the frequency at which users obtain monitoring data can highly affect energy consumption, data timeliness, and user quality of experience (QoE). How to reduce energy consumption while achieving high data timeliness and user QoE is not only important but also challenging. We propose a QoE-aware strategy to schedule the frequency at which users obtain monitoring data and the frequency at which IoT devices upload monitoring data. The QoE-aware strategy sets the changing tolerance (CT) of monitoring data according to the requirements of different applications in different environments. CT indicates the sensitivity of the application to the change of the environmental data. Only when the changing rate of monitoring data exceeds the CT value set, the IoT device uploads monitoring data to the fog server. Besides, to meet the requirements of reducing data traffic and achieving high data timeliness, users can set different values of QoE Index (QI), i.e., the achievement rate for timely access, according to different environmental requirements. With the QI value, the fog server can calculate the optimal time interval (i.e., access period, AP) for users to access monitoring data. Consequently, by setting the values of CT, QI, and AP according to the requirements of different applications in different environments, the QoE-aware strategy is able to achieve the lowest energy consumption and the highest data timeliness. © 2023, Chinese Institute of Electrical engineering. Cooperative coevolution (CC) algorithms, based on the divide-and-conquer strategy, have emerged as the predominant approach to solving large-scale global optimization (LSGO) problems. The efficiency and accuracy of the grouping stage significantly impact the performance of the optimization process. While the general separability grouping (GSG) method has overcome the limitation of previous differential grouping (DG) methods by enabling the decomposition of nonadditively separable functions, it suffers from high computational complexity. To address this challenge, this article proposes a composite separability grouping (CSG) method, seamlessly integrating DG and GSG into a problem decomposition framework to utilize the strengths of both approaches. CSG introduces a step-by-step decomposition framework that accurately decomposes various problem types using fewer computational resources. By sequentially identifying additively, multiplicatively and generally separable variables, CSG progressively groups nonseparable variables by recursively considering the interactions between each nonseparable variable and the formed nonseparable groups. Furthermore, to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of CSG, we introduce two innovative methods: a multiplicatively separable variable detection method and a nonseparable variable grouping method. These two methods are designed to effectively detect multiplicatively separable variables and efficiently group nonseparable variables, respectively. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that CSG achieves more accurate variable grouping with lower computational complexity compared to GSG and state-of-the-art DG-series designs. © 2024 IEEE.

The concept of hybrid switch (HyS) by paralleling low-switching-Ioss silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and low-cost silicon (Si) IGBTs offers an improved performance and cost tradeoff in motor control unit (MCU) for electric vehicles (EVs). In this paper, the loss and thermal models are developed for the proposed HyS. Based on that, a multi-objective method is proposed to select the optimal ratio for the HyS. Reliability of Hybrid Switch for EV s under active short circuit (ASC) operating condition is verified by Simulation. Furthermore, both EV model is developed to evaluate the performance/cost of HyS with endurance mileage under China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC) profile. Several challenges of developing HyS are also discussed. It is found that the combination of 1 SiC MOSFET and 3 IGBTs and DIODEs is the low-cost scheme with optimized junction temperatures, while the scheme with 2 SiC MOSFETs and 2 IGBT and DIODEs is the one with the highest efficiency. The HyS with the high-efficiency ratio has a 4.7% increase in endurance mileage compared with IGBT. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel approach for a system-wide performance evaluation of Zigbee networks, in the context of large-scale lighting applications. It allows a comprehensive assessment of Zigbee networks through quantitative measurement of three key performance indicators: Reliability, Robustness, and Responsiveness. It proposes a systematic framework that injects different traffic scenarios into the network to get performance scores for each node in the network for every scenario. These scores are then passed through weighted scoring algorithms to obtain a network-level score for each performance indicator. Weighting factors are computed through the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) that prioritizes multiple criteria based on merit. The framework has been deployed and tested in real-life lighting systems, considering two luminaire network topologies: open-space and corridor layouts. The results show the use of the framework for overall acceptance testing as well as identifying low-performing nodes. Thus, this paper presents a distinctive methodology and a testbed to qualitatively monitor the performance of any Zigbee network deployed for lighting solutions based on user needs. © 2024 IEEE.

Prediction of the risk of developing Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is very important in drug discovery. Although animal tests usually evaluate DILI, the prediction accuracy of DILI is low because experimental animals have different metabolic pathways from humans. A few microphysiological systems (MPS) have been developed as novel evaluation systems for DILI evaluation. However, the proposed system is not yet practical due to operability, throughput issues, and prediction accuracy. Our purpose is to develop a practical DILI evaluation system. In this study, we investigate the influence of perfusion culture on hepatotoxicity tests using our previously developed Kinetic pump integrated microfluidic plate (KIM-Plate). The results of acetaminophen toxicity tests showed that perfusion culture using KIM-Plate improved the detection sensitivity of hepatotoxicity. We suggest that the liver model MPS based on KIM-Plate could be a novel DILI evaluation system that integrates highly functional liver models and coculture with immune cells. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Reducing children’s exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate in homes and kindergartens in China:Impact on lifetime cancer risks and burden of disease

Exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP)in the indoor environment has been linked with significant health risks for Chinese ***-phase DEHP concentrations in Chinese residences and kindergartens were estimated using a mass balance model based on the current baseline condition and control strategies(i.e.,increasing ventilation rate,reducing area of sources,using mechanical ventilation systems,and using portable air cleaners).The health benefits of each control strategy were quantified as the reduction in lifetime cancer risks(LCR)and burden of disease(BoD).In the current situation,the mean LCR and disability-adjusted life years(DALY)number attributable to indoor DEHP exposure for Chinese children were around 6.0×10^(−6) and 155 thousand,*** mean LCR and DALY might be reduced by 25%-54%and 16%-40%,respectively,by increasing air exchange rates by 100%,reducing the use of source materials by two-thirds or deploying commercial air cleaners in naturally ventilated ***,avoidable DALYs could result in a reduction of mean economic losses of 2.2-5.3 billion *** ventilation systems with filtration units may not be helpful for reducing children’s health ***-specific and tailor-made control measures are critical in lowering indoor exposure to DEHP to promote sustainable buildings and children’s health in China.

Development of a cable-driven redundant space manipulator with large bending angle by combining quaternion joints and segmented coupled linkages mechanism

A cable-driven redundant manipulator has significant potential in confined space applications, such as environmental exploration, equipment monitoring, or maintenance. A traditional design requires 3N driving motors/cables to supply 2N degrees of freedom(DOF) movement *** number of motors is 1.5 times that of the joints’ DOF, increasing the hardware cost and the complexity of the kinematics, dynamics, and control. This study develops a novel redundant space manipulator with decoupled cable-driven joints and segmented linkages. It is a 1680 mm continuum manipulator with eight DOF, consisting of four segmented linkages driven by eight motors/pairs of cables. Each segment has two equivalent DOF, which are realized by four quaternion joints synchronously driven by two linkage cables. The linkage cables of adjacent joints are symmetrically decoupled and offset at 180°. This design allows equal-angle movement of all the joints of each segment. Moreover, each decoupling driving mechanism is designed based on a pulley block composed of two fixed and movable pulleys. The two movable pulleys realize the opposite but equidistant motions of the two driving cables, i.e., pulling and loosening, assuring symmetrical movements of the two driving cables of each segment. Consequently, the equivalent 2N-DOF joints are driven only by 2N motors, significantly reducing the hardware cost and simplifying the mapping relationship between the motor angle/cable length and the joint angle. Furthermore, the bending range of each segment could reach 360°, which is three times that of a traditional design. Finally, a prototype has been developed and experimented with to verify the performance of the proposed mechanism and the corresponding algorithms.

The swift evolution of technology demands a highly efficient system with seamless integration of components. Evolution of system on Chip (SOC) has modified making use of different components within a single chip. Therefore, it becomes very crucial to manage these components. The Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA) bus architecture, a standard SOC interconnection, enhance Intellectual Property (IP) core reusability and streamlines data transmission. Advanced High-Performance Bus (AHB) is part of AMBA family used for High-speed data transfer communication protocol manages with high bandwidth components like processor or memory. Advanced Peripheral Bus (APB) is specifically used for connecting with low bandwidth components like keyboard and mouse. Thus, the importance of AHB2APB bridge becomes very vital. It is the backbone of all data transfer that takes place within a SOC. This paper focuses on reviewing different reported studies in this field, implementing Register Transfer Level (RTL) schematic of AHB2APB bridge. © 2024 IEEE.
