Modeling of Mesoscale Creep Behaviors and Macroscale Creep Responses of Composite Fuels Under Irradiation Conditions

A finite-strain homogenization creep model for composite fuels under irradiation conditions is developed and verified,with the irradiation creep strains of the fuel particles and matrix correlated to the macroscale creep responses,excluding the contributions of volumetric strain induced by the irradiation swelling deformations of fuel particles.A finite element(FE)modeling method for uniaxial tensile creep tests is established with the irradiation effects of nuclear materials taken into *** proposed models and simulation strategy are numerically implemented to a kind of composite nuclear fuel,and the predicted mesoscale creep behaviors and the macroscale creep responses are *** research results indicate that:(1)the macroscale creep responses and the mesoscale stress and strain fields are all greatly affected by the irradiation swelling of fuel particles,owing to the strengthened mechanical interactions between the fuel particles and the matrix.(2)The effective creep rates for a certain case are approximately two constants before and after the critical fission density,which results from the accelerated fission gas swelling after fuel grain recrystallization,and the effects of macroscale tensile stress will be more enhanced at higher temperatures.(3)The macroscale creep contributions from the fuel particles and matrix depend mainly on the current volume fractions varying with fission density.(4)As a function of the macroscale stress,temperature,initial particle volume fraction and particle fission rate,a multi-variable mathematical model for effective creep rates is fitted out for the considered composite fuels,which matches well with the FE *** study supplies important theoretical models and research methods for the multi-scale creep behaviors of various composite fuels and provides a basis for simulation of the thermal–mechanical behavior in related composite fuel elements and assemblies.

Wideband Ka-band printed dipole array antenna with parasitic trapezoidal patch

This work presents a printed Ka-band dipole array antenna with wide bandwidth for millimeter-wave communication applications. The operating band of the proposed antenna ranges from 27.8–38.2 GHz exhibiting a wide bandwidth of 10.4 GHz. A balun structure is designed with interlaced U-shaped bending lines on the upper and lower metal layers to feed the dipole differentially. Parasitic trapezoidal patches are exquisitely placed adjacent to the driven dipoles for coupling, which can enhance bandwidth significantly through multiple resonances. The low-frequency radiation is mainly contributed by the resonance of the dipole, while the high-frequency radiation is affected by both the dipole and the parasitic trapezoidal patch. Due to the trapezoidal patch, the equivalent path length of the resonant current becomes shorter, thus supporting high-frequency resonance. A prototype of the proposed 1 × 2 dipole array antenna was fabricated for validation. The measured –10-dB impedance bandwidth is up to 27.8∼38.2 GHz (or 31.5%) and the realized gain is as high as 8 dBi, which is suitable for advanced millimeter-wave communication applications. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

A rapid and high-performance sensor for lard adulterant in edible oil was developed using the tapered plastic optical fiber(POF)coated with graphene and multi-walled carbon *** coating material was deposited onto a tapered POF with a taper waist diameter and a taper length of 0.45 mm and 1 cm,*** addition of the coating material was used to increase the sensitivity and selectivity coefficient of the tapered POF toward the lard *** sensing mechanism is based on a simultaneous interaction of lard substance and an evanescent wave of tapered POF with the coating *** results showed that graphene coating on the tapered POF increased the selectivity coefficient of the tapered POF towards lard substance from 33.54 to 324.19,and it gave a sensitivity of 0.427 dBm/%.In comparison,multi-walled carbon nanotubes coating increased the selectivity coefficient to 71.65 and increased its sensitivity to 1.189 dBm/%.Thus,the proposed configuration of the tapered POF with the coating material offered a simple configuration for a rapid,high sensitivity and selectivity detection of lard adulterant in edible oils.

To address the limitations of typical coil detection systems and enhance the performance of traditional magnetic field imaging (MFI) systems, we propose a MFI system that uses a 4×4 array of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors. The core controller of the proposed system was designed using a pipelined parallelization algorithm and implemented on a high-speed field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in a fully hardware-based architecture. The designed MFI system can achieve parallel acquisition of magnetic field components from the 16-channel AMR sensor array, parallel data processing, parallel data transmission, and parallel computations in a single cycle of only 4 ms. Compared with typical detection systems, the proposed solution not only exhibits superior performance but can also provide dynamic visual representations of sensed information. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Models to describe the damage and fracture behaviors of the interface between the fuel foil and cladding in UMo/Zr monolithic fuel plates were established and numerically *** effects of the interfacial cohesive strength and cohesive energy on the irradiationinduced thermal-mechanical behaviors of fuel plates were *** results indicated that for heterogeneously irradiated fuel plates:(1)interfacial damage and failure were predicted to be initiated near the fuel foil corner with higher fission densities,accompanied by the formation of a large gap after interface failure,which was consistent with some experimental observations;high tensile stresses in the fuel foil occurred near the edges of the failed interface,attributed to through-thickness cracking of the fuel foil,as found in some post-irradiation examinations;(2)the cohesive strength and cohesive energy of the interface both influenced the in-pile evolution behaviors of fuel plates;a lower cohesive strength or cohesive energy resulted in faster interfacial damage;(3)after interface fracture,the thickness of the whole plate increased to a greater degree(by~20%)than that of the samples without interfacial damage,which was attributed to the locally enhanced Mises stresses and the nearby creep deformations around the cracked *** study provided a theoretical basis for assessing failure in fuel elements.

Electric vehicles are revolutionizing ground transportation and promise to disrupt the future of urban mobility. The technological advancements in the design and control of off-road electric vehicles have required the development of high-fidelity models to predict vehicle dynamic responses. High-fidelity modelling in off-road mobility is important for several reasons, including accurate prediction of the vehicle performance prior to road tests, optimization of energy management, and identification of failure modes. In this paper, a high-fidelity vehicle dynamics model is developed for a 4-wheel independent drive/steer scaled electric off-road vehicle using the MapleSim™ software package. The vehicle multibody dynamic model consists of all the mechanical subsystems of the vehicle, including: a) double wishbone suspension, b) independent steering mechanisms, c) independently driven powertrain, and d) the chassis. Experimental parameter identification is performed to identify the parameters of some key subsystems of the vehicle model. Vehicle mechanical subsystem parameters such as the a) vehicle drag frontal area, b) wheel inertia, and c) location of the vehicle centre of gravity are determined. The accuracy of the multibody dynamic model for an off-road electric vehicle heavily depends on the accuracy of the coupled electrical subsystem model. Therefore, to incorporate the electrical subsystem into the system model, the developed vehicle dynamics plant model is imported into MATLAB™/SIMULINK™ using the Functional Mock-up Interface and an electrical model of the Brushless DC inverter subsystem is developed using custom SPICE based libraries. This co-simulation approach allows electro-mechanical models to be developed from a design-first perspective using electrical and mechanical computer-aided design tools. This leads to a streamlined path for the designer to validate decisions prior to fabrication and assembly. © 2023 IEEE.

Concurrent Cyber Deception Attack Detection of Consensus Control in Isolated AC Microgrids

The sparse communication network exposes the AC microgrid (MG) with higher risk under malicious cyber attacks. Intrusion detection of malicious cyber attacks becomes a critical issue in operations of isolated AC MGs. In this work, a general framework for detecting cyber intrusion deception attacks is proposed by using localized dual variables of the partial primal-dual (PPD) consensus-based distributed droop control. In additional to individual link attacks, node attacks, or stealthy deception attacks considered in conventional studies, concurrent deception attacks, which refer to both link attacks and node attacks will take place in various remote locations of the MG simultaneously, are also investigated. Impacts of concurrent cyber deception attacks on the closed-loop stability of the entire MG will be analyzed comprehensively. Redundancy relationships between the local information and localized dual variables of the PPD algorithm are utilized to derive analytical indices for detecting these concurrent deception attacks. By enhancing our previous cyber defense mechanism with only considering link attacks or node attacks, a new cyber defense mechanism for concurrent deception attacks is presented. Tasks in cyber defense mechanisms including (i) attack localization, (ii) attack isolation, and (iii) resilience enhancement are also presented in details. Numerical experiments on the real-time simulator OPAL-RT are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed detection mechanism. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

The Health Impact of Consuming Smoked Fish and Roasted Plantain on Albino Rats by Serum Enzyme Assay

Over the years, grilling and smoking as food preparation techniques have been found to introduce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to the food products. Such food products when ultimately consumed by human could pose sever health challenges. Here, the effects of consumption of smoked fish and roasted plantain on the serum enzymes of Wistar albino rats were investigated as a method of determining the potential effect of such food consumption on humans. To achieve this, twenty-eight (28) Wistar male albino rats were fed with different concentrations (5, 10, and 20%) of smoked fish and/or roasted plantain for 21 days and killed after 28 days to collect serum for investigating the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Results obtained for AST and ALT in the serum of rats fed with different concentrations of smoked fish and/or roasted plantain were significantly (p < 0.05) different from those obtained for control rats. However, the activity of ALP was substantially lower in the rats fed with different concentrations of smoked fish and roasted plantain when compared to that of the control. Thus, exposure of the albino rats to smoked or roasted foods which inherently contain PAHs induced changes in the activities of AST, ALT, and ALP, which are an indication of the effect on health. This study therefore promotes the awareness on potential human health implications of consuming smoked fish and roasted plantain, which could guide public health policies and decisions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The National Academy of Sciences, India.

A normal-mode helical antenna (NMHA) is commonly used as a human body sensor for human health care applications. It was reported that the conductivity of a human body significantly affects the antenna's electrical performances. This study analyses the performance of NMHA in the human body condition. The objective is to investigate how the conductivity of human tissue affects the antenna's electrical characteristics such as stored power, absorbed power, and input resistance. Electromagnetic simulations were performed using the FEKO 2019 simulator to assess the electromagnetic field distribution, Poynting vector, and electric power relationships in human body tissues. The time-dependent behavior of stored electric and magnetic powers was examined, revealing that they alternate over time. The results demonstrate that increasing tissue conductivity reduces both stored and absorbed power, as evidenced by a decrease in the Poynting vector magnitude. Moreover, the radiated power distribution area shrinks in higher conductivity environments due to the presence of absorbing materials. © 2024 IEEE.
