Induced polarization imparts piezoelectricity in noncrystalline polymer films

Piezoelectric materials produce a linear deformation in response to an applied electric field and are essential for precision-control devices. The conventional view is that polymers must be crystalline and possess remanent polarization after artificial poling to gain piezoelectricity. For the ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene difluoride), the required poling field is exceptionally high, up to 150–200 kV mm−1. Here, we circumvent this limitation by utilizing the elastic displacement of electric dipoles and creating a net polarization. We find that a subcoercive field of 49 kV mm−1 can induce a high piezoelectric coefficient, d33, of −33 pm V−1 in an unpoled poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) film. In this case, the dielectric acts as a piezoelectric, as long as a bias electric field is applied, with its piezoelectric coefficient increasing proportionally to the strength of the electric field until polarization saturation sets in. The proposed methodology is further extended to amorphous polymers, providing an opportunity to discover alternative piezoelectrics within the dielectric family.

Human Gait analysis is a very prodigious and flourishing field of research nowadays, due to its immense importance in clinical and medical studies, rehabilitation, security and surveillance, crime investigation, health, sports, development of marketing applications and product optimization etc. Every human has a distinctive gait pattern, which with critical scrutiny may exhibit a lot of information about his identity and personal traits. Although researchers have made remarkable efforts in this field of research but there is a lack of work regarding sensorial gait analysis for identifying multi-attributes of a person. This paper proposes a novel framework to recognize multi-attributes i.e., user, gender, age and weight of a person based on gait analysis using smartphone built-in sensors including accelerometer, gyroscope and motion sensor. We have used an existing dataset named 'MotionSense' for human activity and attributes recognition. Multi-class machine learning algorithms are applied for training the dataset. We have achieved the accuracy of 99.75% for User, 99.74% for gender, 99.61% for age and 99.74% for weight recognition respectively. Experimental results and performance evaluation of the applied machine learning classifiers reveals the efficacy of the proposed scheme. © 2022 IEEE.

When the traditional SDIF algorithm is applied to the binning of jittered signals, the jitter of the PRI leads to a cumulative dispersion phenomenon, so that the accumulated value never exceeds the detection threshold, leading to the failure of the SDIF algorithm. Based on this, the algorithm is improved on the basis of the traditional SDIF algorithm, combined with some of the literature and the expertise learnt. The experimental simulation results show that the improved SDIF algorithm has better results than the traditional SDIF algorithm in handling jitter signals. © 2023 IEEE.

This research highlights the importance of standards and interoperability in the IoT. An essential component of IoT ecosystems is interoperability, which refers to the ability for various systems and devices to converse and share data. Formats for data, methods of communication, and safeguards are all outlined by standards. Widespread adoption and scalability are made possible through interoperability and standards, which allow devices from many manufacturers to communicate with one another. This research investigates the alliances, regulatory authorities, and commercial associations that cooperate in the creation and advancement of open standards that can be embraced by other entities. The main objective of the research is to showcase the construction of an Internet of Things device capable of communicating with various embedded peripheral protocols utilizing Plug and Play (PnP) technology. Moreover, the research examines the impact of regulatory frameworks on the IoT ecosystem and their role in fostering interoperability. An IoT ecosystem necessitates a standardized and open environment to provide optimal performance in terms of connectivity, data exchange, and innovation. This research contributes to the progress of harmonizing and achieving interoperability among World Wide Web Things. © 2024 IEEE.

Many of the current edge computing devices need efficient implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications due to strict latency, security and power requirements. Nonetheless, such devices, face various challenges when executing AI applications due to their limited computing and energy resources. In particular, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is a popular machine learning method that derives a high-level function from being trained on various visual input examples. This paper contributes to enabling the use of CNN on resource-constrained devices offline, where a trade-off between accuracy, running time and power efficiency is verified. The paper investigates the use of minimum pre-processing methods of input data to identify nonessential computations in the convolutional layers. In this work, Spatial locality of input data is considered along with an efficient pre-processing method to mitigate the accuracy loss caused by the computational re-use approach. This technique was tested on LeNet and CIFAR-10 structures and was responsible for 1.9% and 1.6% accuracy loss while reducing the processing time by 38.3% and 20.9% and reducing the energy by 38.3%, and 20.7%, respectively. The models were deployed and verified on Raspberry Pi 4 B platform using the MATLAB coder to measure time and energy. © 2023 IEEE.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) methanation not only mitigates excessive CO₂ emissions but also circumvents the difficulties associated with the storage and transportation of low-grade energies. However, the competitive reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction severely hampers the productivity of methane (CH₄). In this context, a tri-metallic nanocatalyst (NC) comprising atomic CuOx cluster anchored Pd nanoparticles (NP)s on the cobalt-oxide support (hereafter denoted as CPCu) is developed. Furthermore, to optimize the CO₂ methanation performance, the surface and sub-surface atomic arrangements of the as-prepared CPCu NCs were altered by a sub-millisecond pulsed laser irradiation with per pulse energies of 1 mJ and 10 mJ for a fixed duration of 10 s. For the optimum case (1 mJ per pulse energy input;denoted as CPCu-1), the CPCu-1 NC delivers an optimum CH₄ productivity of ∼1346 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ at 300 °C temperature, which is 13.6% enhanced as compared to the pristine conditions (∼1164 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹). On top of that, the CH₄ selectivity is improved by 40% for CPCu-1 NCs as compared to the as-prepared conditions. The cross-referencing results of physical characterization along with electrochemical analysis indicate that such an improved activity and selectivity of CPCu-1 NCs originate from the significant surface restructure of CPCu-1 NCs, where the high density of surface exposed atomic CuOx species and neighbouring Pd sites, respectively, promotes CO₂ activation and H₂ dissociation steps during CO₂ methanation. We believe that the obtained results will provide insight into designing high-performance catalytic materials for CO₂ methanation by using sub-millisecond pulsed laser irradiation. © 2023 RSC.

The interdigitated back contact (IBC) structure for crystalline-silicon photovoltaic device has long been recognized as an effective technique to overcome the 25% efficiency barrier by shifting all the electrical conducting elements to the backside of the cell. For this structure, the architecture of material interlayer IBC electrodes is very important to reduce the recombination rate without affecting the work function at the metal-semiconductor interface for optimum dissolution and extraction of carriers from the absorber layer. Higher efficiency requires a balance between absolute crystal material and impurities in the semiconductor, doping concentration and PN Junctions, smart grid wires and intelligent sunlight capturing. In this work, the fabrication of a low light intensity functional and high cell temperature sustainable, IBC solar cell is investigated. Silicon-Heterojunction layer to absorb greater solar spectrum and interdigitated N/P contacts have been implemented, which grants the cell to receive full surface sunlight, results in 29% efficiency. Luminous-an optoelectronic device simulator has been utilized to construct a very thin cell with dimensions of 100×150pm. The effects of sunlight intensity and module temperature on the performance have been investigated and the parameters for the most efficient structure were found with 28.81% efficiency and 87. 68%fillfactor rate, making it ultra-thin, flexible and durable providing a wide range of operational capabilities. © 2022 IEEE.

PID control is a commonly used control method. Typical PID tuning methods, such as the Ziegler Nichols and pole placement methods, have the disadvantage of having to know the system model accurately or taking a lot of time due to manual repetitive tuning. Several auto-tuning methods have been studied to overcome these disadvantages. Optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithms are widely used for performing auto-tuning. In this study, we used the PSO algorithm, which an optimization algorithm, for the PID autotuning. The PSO algorithm has the advantage that its implementation is easy and has stable convergence performance. PSO consists of four processes: initialization, velocity calculation, location update, and evaluation. The objective function to be used for the evaluation was determined by comparing the four performance indicators commonly used in the control system: IAE, ISE, ITAE, and ITSE. To verify the performance of the PSO algorithm, simulations and experiments were performed by applying it to an active vibration isolator. Moreover, genetic algorithm was applied equally and was compared subsequently. The comparison confirmed that PSO-PID converges faster and has a better vibration isolation performance when compared to GA-PID. © 2023 Euspen Headquarters.

A fixed-time sliding mode controller is developed for the three-degree-of-freedom air-floating robot (AFR) in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances. By dynamics transformation, the complex nonlinear AFR dynamics are transformed into a second-order feedback decoupling model. A neural network enhanced by actor-critic learning structure is designed to handle model uncertainties, and the nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode controller can ensure all signals in the closed-loop system converge to a residual set around the origin within a fixed time. The system stability is proved by Lyapunov theory and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2023 IEEE.
