Diagnostics is one of the significant parameters of functional safety which concerns itself with revealing dangerous incidents that might impede the operation of safety systems. Diagnostic coverage factor (DC) is defined as a metric for diagnostics in that DC is one of the most important design parameters to measure the effectiveness of safety protection systems. This study addresses how diagnostics impacts proof test interval (TI) when the system is halted completely;a thorough maintenance and changes in parts are performed. Besides this, the relationship between average probability of failure on demand (PFDavg), DC, TI and mean time to failure (MTTF) are presented for 1oo2 and 1oo2D system architectures. © 2014 IEEE.

The software reliability plays an important role nowadays. From year to year the systems become more and more complex. Consequently, the software becomes more and more complex, too and this can cause more software errors. In this paper a new method is introduced, which serves to predict the reliability of software in a better way. Furthermore, the presumption that the hazard rate is constant is rebutted and a more realistic assumption is made. It is demonstrated that by the use of the new approach the prediction of the number of remaining errors is possible in a better way.

Nowadays, many noticeable continues efforts are taken in the vehicle industry to develop robust intelligent systems that control and monitor the vehicles during operational time to lower the side effects of some abnormal conditions such as sliding and spinning; because of their main role in affecting the human safety and the vehicle life-time as well as the costs related to maintenance. Therefore, the importance of manipulating and controlling these special statuses with respect to safety and cost are the main motivations behind conducting this research work. In this paper a conceptual prototype of a safety-related platform for monitoring and recognizing the vehicles states by means of vibration sensors incorporated with incremental rotary encoders is presented. Additionally, the proposed approaches and algorithms to detect the vehicle status based on the captured sensory data are also presented.

The paper provides an overview of how to create an estimator focusing on failure-defection in safety related systems. Stochastic play a very important role in safety technology. With the help of it, safety systems may be released reliably after an assessment. With the help of the probability theory meaningful statements are achieved and based on them, realistic forecasts may be given. However, in order that reliable forecasts can be conducted, new approaches in thinking need to be developed. This paper serves to give a short synopsis about the actual problem of the probabilistic safety technology on the base of stochastic. In that, the test methods, however, plays the most important role as the test results are source vectors for probabilistic models. However, this paper tries to describe a suitable, innovative method that will correctly estimate the safety parameters. The first part explains the necessary basic tools. Furthermore, the safety technology is explained with stochastic playing a central role in it. Following this, the approach for the construction of the estimator is introduced. Concluding, the summary and an outlook will be given.

For information systems in which the server must operate on encrypted data (which may be necessary because the service provider cannot be trusted) solutions need to be found that enable fast searches on that data. In this paper we present an approach for encrypted database indexes that enable fast inequality, i.e., range searches, such that also prefix searches on lexicographically ordered but encrypted data are possible. Unlike common techniques that address this issue as well, like hardware-based solutions or order-preserving encryption schemes, our indexes do not require specialized, expensive hardware and use only well-accredited software components; they also do not reveal any information about the encrypted data besides their order. Moreover, when implementing the indexing approach in a commercial software product, multiple application-centric optimization opportunities of the index's performance did emerge, which are also presented in this paper. They include basic performance-increasing measures, pipelined index scans and updates and caching strategies. We further present performance test results proving that our indexing approach shows good performance on substantial amounts of data.

Heterogeneous redundant series-parallel systems allow the mixing of components within the same subsystem. This diversity feature may improve the overall characteristics of the system compared with the homogeneous case in term of less susceptibility against so called common-cause failures and reduced cost. That means they guarantee longer availability and are quite suitable for systems that are designed to perform continuous processes. But the main challenging task is to determine the optimal design that corresponds to the minimal investment costs and satisfies the predefined constraints. This kind of combinatorial optimization tasks is perfectly solved using heuristic methods, since those approaches showed stability, powerfulness, and computing effectiveness in solving such matters. This task is more complex than the homogeneous case since the search space is getting larger due to the fact that every component available and that can be deployed in a subsystem has to be taken into account. This fact leads definitely to greater chromosome length and makes the search more time consuming. The algorithm has been implemented in Matlab and three different existing models (Levitin, Lisnianski, and Ouzineb) have been considered for a comparison with the homogeneous case and for validation purposes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Software is nowadays used in almost all systems. Therefore, the reliability of the software is a crucial aspect in safety engineering. Software errors can cause life-threatening situations. To counter this, software reliability models are used. Currently, there are a great number of software reliability models existing. The model that will be considered as the most appropriate is depending on the respective project. That is why it cannot always be decided in advance which model would be the most suitable. In this paper a method is presented that serves to show how the most appropriate model for a project can be selected.

If safety related systems are remanufactured, as for example steering systems, the functionality, the functional safety, the reliability and the quality have to fulfill the series standards such as the E/E/PE standard IEC 61508 or the automobile standard ISO 26262. This paper examines an investigation with the objective to present a prevention model with which the reliability and the renewal function of safety components for remanufactured systems can predict. Failure data serve as a basis and make the predict model not only to a theoretical, but also to a practical tool.

Wireless communication modeling for safety related systems

This paper deals with the modeling of wireless communication for safety related systems. To achieve safe wireless communication for safety related systems, the wireless channel is modeled by taking into account both bit errors and erasures (loss of information) that occur during wireless transmission of the information. To reduce the bit errors and to detect the erasures, a coding method for transmitting the code word is suggested in this paper. With this coding method, parameters such as bit error, probability of undetected error are reduced and the bit erasures that occur due to fast fading and channel losses are detected confidently. The safety methods as defined according to the European standard EN 50159-2 are taken into consideration and their implementation to achieve safe wireless communication for safety related systems is explained in this paper. The mathematical derivations to calculate the probability of failures per hour (PFH) values for wireless communication with the suggested coding method are derived. With the derived PFH equation, safety integrity level (SIL) achieved for a particular wireless technology can be determined. Finally, the SIL levels achieved for Bluetooth technology are shown. © 2014 North Atlantic University Union. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, many major efforts and interests are focused on providing better services for some elders and patients who have to live alone, while they are exposed to different dangers during their daily life activities such as falling. The necessity to reduce the negative consequences of falling, whether related to physical or psychological health or to financial encumbrances, by providing an immediate help and a continuous remote monitoring, drives a corresponding meaning to develop a reasonable safety-related monitoring and detecting system of the human motion with respect to the privacy and the simplicity. In this paper, a conceptual prototype of safety-related platform for monitoring human activities by mean of limited number of acceleration and rotation sensors is presented. Additionally, the proposed approach that adopts the artificial neural networks to overcome the challenges emerged by reducing the number of motion sensors and to compensate the missing data is also introduced. Moreover, the required procedures for collecting training and testing data are also summarized in the last section.
