In a previous work, a fully predictable and a sub-linear-runtime heuristic for the multiplication by a constant based on the radix-2~r arithmetic was developed. It is called RADLX-2~r. In this paper we focalize on the optimization of the average number of additions (Avg) to make RADIX-2~r more competitive with the existing heuristics. In this work, the obtained results are compared only to the standard Canonic Signed Digit (CSD) representation.

The outage probability of a two-hop coordinated decode-and-forward relay network is investigated. Relay coordination is performed only with the dominant interferer. Different levels of network coordination are studied and their performances are compared. Exact expressions are derived for the outage probability of a particular mobile user for each coordination scheme. Asymptotic outage probability is derived to identify the diversity and coding gains for each coordination scheme.

This paper presents a system that is able to monitor the patient vital signs (Heart Rate, SPO 2 , NIBP, ECG, temperature and respiration rate) and send them continuously to the doctor's android phone device. The system enables multiple patients to be connected to the same doctor. Within the system, the health care professional may activate/deactivate any of the vital signs sensors. He can also set a prescription for the patient, schedule a meeting,... When bad activities are received, a message is directly sent to the doctor and to the patient relatives in order to alert them. Note that the Bluetooth connection is used to send/receive data between the patient platform and its android system. The tested results showed an almost error free system with an accuracy above 95% and a few milliseconds delay between the vital signs reading and their upload over the server.

The performance of optimum combining (OC) in decode-and forward (DF) relaying in the presence of a Poisson field of interferers is analyzed. An approximation for the outage probability of the OC receiver is derived by considering the temporal correlation of the interference. Despite the randomness of the number and the locations of the interferers, the OC receiver suppresses the interference at the destination node and diversity gains are achieved, provided that the relay nodes are noise limited. For single-antenna relay nodes, the end-to-end performance is vulnerable to interference at the relay nodes which is not canceled, resulting in zero diversity gains.

We propose a forward error correction (FEC) coding rate adaptation scheme which maximizes the quality of experience (QoE), for scalable video coding (SVC) based video transmissions over multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed scheme adaptively selects the best set of spatial channels, number of video layers and their corresponding FEC coding rate according to channel state information (CSI) from the receiver. Unlike previous work, our proposed scheme distributes the FEC encoded bit streams to multiple spatial channels so that additional diversity gains can be obtained. Due to the complexity of the optimization, we decompose the original problem into several sub-problems, which can then be solved by a heuristic algorithm. The optimal solution can be found by choosing the best among all the candidate solutions obtained from the sub-problems. The effectiveness and superb performance of our proposed scheme can be demonstrated by many simulations with different videos and channel conditions.

Connectivity is crucial to ensure information availability and survivability for wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to study the connectivity of wireless networks under a general type of interference attack, which can address diverse applications including Cognitive Radio, Jamming attack and shadowing effect. By considering the primary users, jammers and deep fading as unified Interferers, we investigate a 3-dimensional connectivity region, defined as the set of key system parameters - the density of users, the density of Interferers and the interference range of Interferers - with which the network is connected. Further we study the impact of the Interferers' settings on node isolation probability, which is a fundamental local connectivity metric. Through percolation theory, the sufficient and necessary conditions for global connectivity are also derived. Our study is supported by simulation results.

Visitors utilize the urban space based on their thermal perception and thermal environment. The thermal adaptation engages the user’s behavioural, physiological and psychological aspects. These aspects play critical roles in user’s ability to assess the thermal environments. Previous studies have rarely addressed the effects of identified factors such as gender, age and locality on outdoor thermal comfort, particularly in hot, dry climate. This study investigated the thermal comfort of visitors at two city squares in Iran based on their demographics as well as the role of thermal environment. Assessing the thermal comfort required taking physical measurement and questionnaire survey. In this study, a non-linear model known as the neural network autoregressive with exogenous input (NN-ARX) was employed. Five indices of physiological equivalent temperature (PET), predicted mean vote (PMV), standard effective temperature (SET), thermal sensation votes (TSVs) and mean radiant temperature (T mrt) were trained and tested using the NN-ARX. Then, the results were compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The findings showed the superiority of the NN-ARX over the ANN and the ANFIS. For the NN-ARX model, the statistical indicators of the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.53 and 0.36 for the PET, 1.28 and 0.71 for the PMV, 2.59 and 1.99 for the SET, 0.29 and 0.08 for the TSV and finally 0.19 and 0.04 for the T mrt.

This paper studies the opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) of the secondary users in a large-scale overlay cognitive radio (CR) network. Two threshold-based OSA schemes, namely the primary receiver assisted (PRA) protocol and the primary transmitter assisted (PTA) protocol, are investigated. Under the PRA/PTA protocols, a secondary transmitter (ST) is allowed to access the spectrum only when the maximum signal power of the received beacons/pilots sent from the active primary receivers/transmitters (PRs/PTs) is lower than a certain threshold. To measure the resulting transmission opportunity for the secondary users by the proposed OSA protocols, the concept of spatial opportunity, which is defined as the probability that an arbitrary location in the primary network is detected as a spatial spectrum hole, is introduced and then evaluated by applying tools from stochastic geometry. Based on spatial opportunity, the coverage (non-outage transmission) performance in the overlay CR network is analyzed. With the obtained results of spatial opportunity and coverage probability, we finally characterize the spatial throughput, which is defined as the average spatial density of successful transmissions in the primary/secondary network, under the PRA and PTA protocols, respectively. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

In this paper we propose a methodology that allows us to predict the application scalability behavior in a specific system, providing information to select the most appropriate resources to run the application. We explain the general methodology, focusing on the presentation of a novel method to model the logical application trace for a large number of processes. This method is based on the projection of a set of executions of the application signature for a small number of processes. The generated traces are validated by comparing them with the real traces obtained with PAS2P tool. We present the experimental validation for the BT Nas Parallel Benchmark. The signatures for 16, 36, 64, 81 and 100 processes were executed and used to model and project the logical trace for 1024 processes. The results obtained show the accuracy of the method. The communication pattern was predicted without error, while the predicted error is less than 10% for the communication volume and less than 5% for the number of instructions.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology have recently been suggested as efficient supportive technology for platooning applications over short inter-vehicle distances. Though, ensuring the continuity of Line-of-Sight (LOS) of any optical-based applications is one of the most complex scenarios for an autonomous vehicle control, and still remains as an open challenge for Intelligent Transformation systems (ITS). Exchanging information about the relative directional position of each member of the platoon, together with front and rear facing directions of each vehicle, can be very useful data for building a smooth geometrical-based compensation method, which results in ensuring that any increase in both incidence and irradiance optical angles will never exceed the Field of View (FOV) limitations and regardless of the trajectory shape. This paper propose a tracking alike compensation method of four vehicles equipped with positioning and VLC systems. We have simulated different scenarios related to different trajectories and compensation angles limits. The simulation results show that trajectories influence on the optical incidence and irradiance angles can be compensated efficiently and without deploying any tracking method.
