The association between non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is now well established, as people with COPD are more likely to develop lung carcinoma. However, the evidence for this relationship is inconclusive and there is currently little information on the underlying molecular mechanisms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are one of the regulatory factors in NSCLC and COPD that their functions are widely studied in many chronic diseases and cancers. In this study, we applied systems biology approaches to identify and predict miRNAs that potentially play regulatory roles between COPD and NSCLC. We performed differential expression analysis on public miRNA and mRNA expression datasets, for both of diseases, and then we reconstructed two miRNA-mRNA co-expression networks and merged these two co-expression networks into a community co-expression network. Results indicated the existence of very common miRNAs (ex. hsa-miR-326 and hsa-miR-1293) and mRNAs (such as FAT2, ALOX5AP, and LDB2) between the two mentioned diseases. Moreover, we discovered specific miRNAs (hsa-miR-574-3p) that targeted common mRNAs. We utilized drug-target interaction networks to identify candidate drugs for common mRNAs, which can be considered in the treatment of two diseases (e.g. iloperidone). Generally, our study highlighted common miRNAs between COPD and NSCLC that as new signatures or biomarkers for therapeutic purposes. Investigating the miRNA biomarkers in this study improves our understanding about the shared mechanisms between COPD and NSCLC. © 2022

Joint source and channel coding (JSCC) for image transmission has attracted increasing attention due to its robustness and high efficiency. However, the existing deep JSCC research mainly focuses on minimizing the distortion between the transmitted and received information under a fixed number of available channels. Therefore, the transmitted rate may be far more than its required minimum value. In this paper, an adaptive information bottleneck (IB) guided joint source and channel coding (AIB-JSCC) method is proposed for image transmission. The goal of AIB-JSCC is to reduce the transmission rate while improving the image reconstruction quality. In particular, a new IB objective for image transmission is proposed so as to minimize the distortion and the transmission rate. A mathematically tractable lower bound on the proposed objective is derived, and then, adopted as the loss function of AIB-JSCC. To trade off compression and reconstruction quality, an adaptive algorithm is proposed to adjust the hyperparameter of the proposed loss function dynamically according to the distortion during the training. Experimental results show that AIB-JSCC can significantly reduce the required amount of transmitted data and improve the reconstruction quality and downstream task accuracy. In multi-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MC MU-MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) systems, each user is equipped with multiple closely-placed photodiodes (PDs) with similar channel gains, leading to severe inter-cell interference and intra-cell interference. To address this problem, this paper proposes a hybrid dimming (HD) scheme with MIMO VLC transceiver design, which jointly optimizes transmit and receive antenna selection (TRAS), cell clustering and precoding (TRASP-HD) for MC MU-MIMO VLC systems. In this scheme, a sum-rate maximization problem under the dimming level and illumination uniformity is formulated and solved by being divided into two sub-problems. In particular, The first sub-problem is on TRAS and cell formation based on the criterion of sum-rate maximization under the illumination uniformity constraint. With the same goal, the second sub-problem is on optimizing the precoding matrices of each cell. Finally, these two sub-problems are iteratively solved to obtain a convergent solution. Simulation results verify that in a typical indoor scenario, the mean bandwidth efficiency of TRASP-HD scheme is 2.36 bit/s/Hz higher than the conventional MC MU-MIMO system.

Visible light positioning (VLP) is an accurate indoor positioning technology that uses luminaires as transmitters. In particular, circular luminaires are a common source type for VLP, that are typically treated only as point sources for positioning, while ignoring their geometry characteristics. In this paper, the arc feature of the circular luminaire and the coordinate information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) are jointly used for positioning, and a novel perspective arcs approach is proposed for VLC-enabled indoor positioning. The proposed approach does not rely on any inertial measurement unit and has no tilted angle limitaion at the user. First, a VLC assisted perspective circle and arc algorithm (V-PCA) is proposed for a scenario in which a complete luminaire and an incomplete one can be captured by the user. Based on plane and solid geometry theory, the relationship between the luminaire and the user is exploited to estimate the orientation and the coordinate of the luminaire in the camera coordinate system. Then, the pose and location of the user in the world coordinate system are obtained by single-view geometry theory. Considering the cases in which parts of VLC links are blocked, an anti-occlusion VLC assisted perspective arcs algorithm (OA-V-PA) is proposed. In OA-V-PA, an approximation method is developed to estimate the projection of the luminaire's center on the image and, then, to calculate the pose and location of the user. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 90th percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm. Moreover, an experimental prototype is implemented to verify the feasibility. In the established prototype, a fused image processing method is proposed to simultaneously obtain the VLC information and the geometric information. Experimental results in the established prototype show that the average positioning accuracy is less than 5 cm for different tilted angles of the user.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The performance optimization of UAV communication systems requires the joint design of UAV trajectory and communication efficiently. To tackle the challenge of infinite design variables arising from the continuous-time UAV trajectory optimization, a commonly adopted approach in the existing literature is by approximating the UAV trajectory with piecewise-linear path segments connected via a finite number of waypoints in three-dimensional (3D) space. However, this approach may still incur prohibitive computational complexity in practice when the UAV flight period/distance becomes long, as the distance between consecutive waypoints needs to be kept sufficiently small to retain high approximation accuracy. To resolve this fundamental issue, we propose in this paper a new and general framework for UAV trajectory and communication co-design with flexible number of waypoint optimization variables (called designable waypoints) or their sub-path representations. First, we propose a flexible path discretization scheme that optimizes only a number of selected waypoints (designable waypoints) along the UAV path for complexity reduction, while all the designable and non-designable waypoints are used in calculating the approximated communication utility along the UAV trajectory for ensuring high trajectory discretization accuracy. Next, given any number of designable waypoints, we propose a novel path compression scheme where the UAV 3D path is first decomposed into three one-dimensional (1D) sub-paths and each sub-path is then approximated by superimposing a number of selected basis paths (which are generally less than the number of designable waypoints) weighted by their corresponding path coefficients, thus further reducing the path design complexity. This paper proposes a hybrid dimming scheme based on joint LED selection and precoding design (TASP-HD) for multiple-user (MU) multiple-cell (MC) visible light communications (VLC) systems. In TASP-HD, both the LED selection and the precoding of each cell can be dynamically adjusted to reduce the intra- and inter-cell interferences while satisfying illumination constraints. First, a MU-MC-VLC system model is established, and then a sum-rate maximization problem under dimming level and illumination uniformity constraints is formulated. In this studied problem, the indices of activated LEDs and precoding matrices are optimized, which result in a complex non-convex mixed integer problem. To solve this problem, the original problem is separated into two subproblems. The first subproblem, which maximizes the sum-rate of users via optimizing the LED selection with a given precoding matrix, is a mixed integer problem solved by the penalty method. With the optimized LED selection matrix, the second subproblem which focuses on the maximization of the sum-rate via optimizing the precoding matrix is solved by the Lagrangian dual method. Finally, these two subproblems are iteratively solved to obtain a convergent solution. Simulation results verify that in a typical indoor scenario under a dimming level of 70%, the mean bandwidth efficiency of TASPHD is 4.8 bit/s/Hz and 7.13 bit/s/Hz greater than AD and DD, respectively. © 2021, CC BY-SA.

When performance tools are used to analyze an application with thousands of processes, the data generated can be bigger than the memory size of the cluster node, causing this data to be loaded in swap memory. In HPC systems, moving data to swap is not always an option. This problem causes scalability limitations that affect the user experience and it presents serious restrictions for executing on a large scale. In order to obtain knowledge about the application's performance, the performance tools usually instrument the application to generate the data. When the instrumented parallel application is executed with thousands of processes, the data generated may be higher than the memory size of the compute node used to analyze the data in order to obtain the knowledge. Performance tools such as PAS2P predict the execution time in target machines. In order to predict the performance, PAS2P carries out a data analysis with the data in each application process. The data collected is analyzed sequentially, which results in an inefficient use of system resources. To solve this, we propose designing a parallel method to solve the problem when we manage a high volume of data, decreasing its execution time and increasing scalability, improving the PAS2P toolkit to generate performance knowledge defined by the application's behavior phases. © 2019 IEEE.
