Tumors in the brains may be Benign or malignant but they are growths of cells in the brain. Aches, seizures, vomiting, dementia, and impaired vision are generic symptoms of the ailment. In early diagnosis, detection of the disease and determining the right treatment method for the patients MRI scans are important. There are a number of Deep Learning-based detection techniques available, however their accuracy and error rates may be low. This study uses a Random-Coupled Neural Network with Cat Hunting Optimization (RCNNet-CHOpt) to identify and classify brain tumor in order to get around these issues. Only one kind of BraTS dataset is used by the suggested approach: The filters to enhance image quality and reduce noise, the input images are pre-processed using the Adaptive and Propagated Mesh Filtering (APMF). This is followed by feature extraction and classification using Mellin Transform (M-Trans) with Random-Coupled Neural Network (R-CNN). When combined, these two networks can accurately classify the images and identify important elements. Finally, to increase accuracy, the weight parameter of R-CNN is modified using the Cat Hunting Optimization (CHO) technique. The proposed method has a 99.8% recall and a 99.9% accuracy rate, outperforming existing methods. Among the primary advantages of the RCNNet-CHOpt are decreased false-positive rates and enhanced precision in identifying intricate brain tumor formations. Hence, it is an especially useful tool for clinical use in the identification of brain tumor because most of these applications manage large volumes of medical data.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) presents a promising approach for charging electric vehicles (EVs), offering increased convenience, reliability, and safety for EV customers. Recently, the incorporation of multiple coil structures in wireless charging systems has addressed various operational challenges, enhanced power transfer, and provided a scalable solution for EVs. However, cross-coupling issues and space limitation problems arise when multiple coils are introduced to the WPT system. In this paper, a novel integrated compact coupler is proposed, including two naturally decoupled coils on the transmitter side, while both are coupled with the receiver coil to improve the power transfer capability of the system. ANSYS Maxwell is employed to simulate the proposed coupler and evaluate its performance under misalignment operations. The proposed wireless charging system inherently detects misalignment direction based on the variation of output voltage with respect to x-misalignment. As a result, the experimental prototype of the designed wireless WPT system presents a peak efficiency of 97.08% at 1.147-kW output power for an air gap of 120 mm under fully-aligned condition. Additionally, the designed compensation coil can transfer power of 243.76-W under fully-aligned condition and increases reliability in power transfer during misalignment operations. © 2013 IEEE.

Prolonged leaf wetness is a critical factor influencing the development and spread of plant diseases, particularly fungal pathogens, which thrive in moist environments. These pathogens negatively impact crop health, photosynthesis, nutrient absorption, and agricultural productivity. Accurately measuring leaf wetness duration (LWD) is essential for early disease detection and mitigation strategies. Leaf wetness sensors (LWS) are designed to detect wetness on leaf surfaces. Traditional LWS, fabricated using printed circuit boards (PCBs), have been extensively studied and are commercially available, such as the PHYTOS-31. However, flexible LWS are preferred due to their ability to conform to the natural shape of leaves, improving accuracy, better contact resistance, and durability under field conditions. However, these sensors exhibited limitations such as electrode oxidation and peeling, reducing stability and wetness sensitivity over time. To overcome these challenges, this study investigates replacing conventional metal-based interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) with graphene-based IDEs, leveraging graphene's superior electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. The fabricated flexible graphene LWS has been evaluated for its sensitivity, response time, hysteresis, temperature response, and stability, which are about ≈26,000%, ≈ 35 seconds, ≈ 5%, ≈ 6.79%, and 5 months, respectively. Benchmarking against the commercially available PHYTOS-31 LWS demonstrated an absolute error of ±3%, confirming the reliability and accuracy. These results validate the potential of graphenebased flexible LWS for accurate and long-term monitoring of leaf wetness duration in agricultural and ecological applications. © 2017 IEEE.

This article proposes a new multi-level inverter (MLI) based on flying capacitor inverter (FCI), with focused on high-precision positioning control for a voice coil motor (VCM). Multi-level inverters (MLIs) have the characteristic that increasing the number of output voltage levels reduces the output voltage error. However, as the number of levels increases, the number of circuit elements increases, and the circuit becomes more complex. In addition, the output voltage amplitude for each level is constant in conventional inverters. As a result, such as high-precision positioning control of VCM, designing an appropriate inverter for a reference wave that contains a large amount of low-voltage components increases the number of circuit elements. Therefore, this paper proposes a MLI with two unbalanced dc-input voltages, referred to as unbalanced MLIs (UMLIs) hereinafter. This topology uses two different dc-input voltages, and it is possible to reduce the output voltage level in extremely low-voltage range compared to other voltage levels. Simulation results when the high-precision positioning control of the VCM confirm that the proposed UMLIs improves the control performance compared to the conventional FCIs with equal number of output voltage levels and uniform level widths.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are developing so fast that they can bring revolutionary changes in ecological sustainability, public health, and community welfare. In contrast, the present waste management system has a set of inefficiencies due to some challenges, such as poor waste stream segregation, limited real-time data analysis, and negligible integration of recent technology. These challenges lead to environmental degradation, public health hazards, and inefficient usage of resources. This research targets these challenges by designing an IWM framework like AI-IoT for smart waste management. The system employs AI models powered by IoT sensors for efficient waste collection, classification, and optimization of recycling schedules. CNN (convolutional neural networks) with transfer learning enabled by Res-Net provides high-accuracy image recognition, which can be used for waste classification. Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) allow multilingual users to interact and communicate properly in any linguistic environment. Data collected from IoT-enabled smart bins is transmitted in real-time to a central control system for dynamic decision-making and follow-up analysis. A pilot exercise to verify the system's effectiveness was implemented in metropolitan settings to show the transformation: landfill dependency was decreased by 30 %, recycling efficiency was greatly increased to 90 %, and thus the cost of waste management was optimized. At the same time, environmental health inequity, causing pathogen-related threats, was reduced by 35 %. The model has an accuracy of 96.8 %. The features of the proposed framework not only provide solutions to the existing inefficiencies but also enhance scalability, cost-effectiveness, and global environmental standardization. Traditional visual-inertial SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) systems predominantly rely on feature point matching from a single robot to realize the robot pose estimation and environment map construction. However, in complex scenarios, these traditional systems struggle with issues such as tracking failures due to illumination changes, rapid movements, and low-texture environments, and they perform poorly in terms of mapping efficiency and global consistency. To address these challenges, we propose a centralized collaborative SLAM system that employs both point and line features for tracking in the robot and map fusion in the cloud. The proposed system leverages the fusion of point and line features across all instances in the process, which allows our method to achieve higher localization accuracy in structured, low-texture scenes. With the aid of classifying gravity-aligned vertical lines and spatial parallel lines, the proposed system can deliver faster and more accurate odometry in complex scenes. Furthermore, we developed intra-robot and inter-robot loop closure detection methods based on point and line features, generating a globally consistent sparse point cloud and structured scene map in the cloud. Our method is able to build richer maps while improving accuracy compared to existing methods. Experimental results on public datasets and in real-world environments show that, compared to existing advanced methods, our approach demonstrates better performance. © 2014 IEEE.

A Self-Healing WDM Access Network with Protected Fiber and FSO Link Paths Effective Against Fiber Breaks

In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FSO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The new optical line terminal (OLT), remote node (RN), and optical network unit (ONU) in the presented PON architecture result in self-protective function against fiber breakpoints. In the measurement, 25 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation was applied on each WDM channel to assess the downstream and upstream signals after 25 km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 25 km SMF + 2 m FSO connections, respectively. In addition to using protected fiber paths for self-healing operations. This PON system can also apply the FSO link method. The measured bit error rate (BER) for all downstream and upstream traffic was maintained below 3.8 × 10−3 with forward error correction (FEC). The detected optical power sensitivity of the proposed self-restorative fiber- and FSO-based WDM-PON for downstream and upstream WDM signals ranged from −33.5 to −28.5 dBm and from −33 to −28.5 dBm, respectively, and the corresponding power budgets of the downstream and upstream WDM signals were between 29.5 and 30.5 dB and 33 and 38 dB, respectively. © 2025 by the authors.

DSAA: Cross-modal transferable double sparse adversarial attacks from images to videos

Recent preliminary research has examined cross-modal attacks, enabling the transition of unlabeled attacks from images to videos. The current cross-modal attacks are mainly dense attacks, while sparse attacks have not been explored. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes a cross-modal transferable double sparse adversarial attack (DSAA) method. Specifically, DSAA incorporates both spatial sparsity and temporal sparsity. Firstly, we design a novel double-cross-shaped patch paradigm to achieve spatial sparsity. Leveraging this patch for perturbation addition enables a more effective global impact on video frames. Subsequently, we propose a uniform temporal sparsity strategy to achieve temporal sparsity. Even if only half of the frames are perturbed, the resulting average attack success rate remains comparable to that of perturbing all frames. Furthermore, we take into account the luminance, contrast, and structure of images and propose a structural similarity loss function (SSLF). By utilizing SSLF to measure the similarity of intermediate feature maps and incorporating it into perturbation optimization, DSAA achieves excellent attack performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate DSAA's superiority over state-of-the-art approaches in terms of attack success rate. The proposed DSAA uses video adversarial examples generated by four ImageNet-pretrained image models on Kinetics-400 and UCF-101 to attack six video recognition models, achieving average attack success rates of 85.83% and 82.02%, respectively. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Enhancing Brain Tumor Segmentation Using Channel Attention and Transfer learning

Accurate and efficient segmentation of brain tumors is critical for diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring in clinical practice. In this study, we present an enhanced ResUNet architecture for automatic brain tumor segmentation, integrating an EfficientNetB0 encoder, a channel attention mechanism, and an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module. The EfficientNetB0 encoder leverages pre-trained features to improve feature extraction efficiency, while the channel attention mechanism enhances the model’s focus on tumor-relevant features. ASPP enables multiscale contextual learning, crucial for handling tumors of varying sizes and shapes. The proposed model was evaluated on two benchmark datasets: TCGA LGG and BraTS 2020. Experimental results demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms the baseline ResUNet and its EfficientNet variant, achieving Dice coefficients of 0.903 and 0.851 and HD95 scores of 9.43 and 3.54 for whole tumor and tumor core regions on the BraTS 2020 dataset, respectively. compared with state-of-the-art methods, our approach shows competitive performance, particularly in whole tumor and tumor core segmentation. These results indicate that combining a powerful encoder with attention mechanisms and ASPP can significantly enhance brain tumor segmentation performance. The rise of deep learning algorithms has sparked interest in the financial domain. The foreign exchange market (FOREX) is the globally leading financial market with millions of active stakeholders. Research in deep learning for forecasting price movements has shown its efficacy in financial markets. Notably, LSTM have empirically proven the best performance among other machine learning techniques. However, studies have shown the lack of deep learning hybrid comparisons to fortify empirical claims, especially in the FX market characterized for its high volatility and variance among currency pairs. This study develops a generalized LSTM model to forecast the major pairs and conducts a comparative analysis with a secondary hybrid deep learning model to assess and solidify the robustness of deep learning methods in forex forecasting. The empirical scenario simulates a classification problem employing cross-validation techniques to optimize the models’ generalization rigorously. Evaluation of the model utilized the accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score metrics. Results indicated the performance of the models from best to worst were LSTM, SRNN and followed by CNN indicating the importance of testing deep learning approaches in different empirical setups. Conclusively, this study highlights the need challenges in forex forecasting and raises the need for more robust assessments on machine learning models forecasting capabilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
