The effects of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) additives on the electrical characteristics of the Al-doped ZnO varistors are investigated. The leakage current densities of the samples decrease first and then increase again with the increase of the amount of MnO 2 additives. Correspondingly, the nonlinear coefficients of the samples keep on increasing and then decrease. In addition, the donor densities increase monotonously with the amount of the doped MnO 2 increasing. The effects of MnO 2 additives on the electrical characteristics of the samples are different from the conclusion of previous literatures. The reasons of the distinct effects are supposed to be related with the donor and interface state densities of the samples.

This paper presents an algorithm for calculating recognition error for minimum Hamming distance classifiers, a special case of the Bayes (optimum) classifier under certain constraints. The error rate algorithm is derived for the two-category case when the binary components of the measurement vector are binomially distributed. The algorithm is easily extended to the multi-category case when the ratio of total measurements to measurements used per dichotomization is large. A number of categorizers were designed using conventional methods and actual quantized typewritten characters. The recognition error was calculated: 1. (1) theoretically, using the algorithm; and 2. As a part of the analysis of response of pulsation from a reciprocating compressor complicated piping system, calculation method of pulsation is proposed which is an extension of natural frequency calculation reported before. Experiment is also conducted in measuring pulsations on the discharge-line of a Diesel engine supercharging air compressor in order to compare with the calculation results. The calculated amplitude of vibration becomes larger in the vicinity of resonant frequency due to the elimination of damping force, but the vibration mode has a perfect coincidence with experiment. Results of both experiment and calculation coincide very well in the non-resonant region. Also assumption of the discharging velocity out of compressor is proved almost correct.

This paper describes the effect of voluntary upper body movement in assisting the indoor rowing exercise for paraplegics. The indoor rowing exercise is introduced as a total body exercise for rehabilitation of function of lower extremities through the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The model is developed using Visual Nastran Software. Three different damping levels of the flywheel are set up to provide different pulling forces during the pull phase of rowing manoeuvre. Fuzzy logic control is implemented to control the knee and elbow trajectory for each of the damper level settings. The generated level of electrical stimulations for activation of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles are recorded and analysed. In view of good results obtained, it is concluded that the voluntary upper body movement with proper rowing manoeuvre significantly contributes to assisting paraplegics' indoor rowing exercise.
