Physics-informed neural networks for parameter learning of wildfire spreading

Wildland fires pose a terrifying natural hazard, underscoring the urgent need to develop datadriven and physics-informed digital twins for wildfire prevention, monitoring, intervention, and response. In this direction of research, this work introduces a physics-informed neural network (PiNN) designed to learn the unknown parameters of an interpretable wildfire spreading model. The considered modeling approach integrates fundamental physical laws articulated by key model parameters essential for capturing the complex behavior of wildfires. The proposed machine learning framework leverages the theory of artificial neural networks with the physical constraints governing wildfire dynamics, including the first principles of mass and energy conservation. Training of the PiNN for physics-informed parameter identification is realized using synthetic data on the spatiotemporal evolution of one- and two-dimensional firefronts, derived from a high-fidelity simulator, as well as empirical data (ground surface thermal images) from the Troy Fire that occurred on June 19, 2002, in California. The parameter learning results demonstrate the predictive ability of the proposed PiNN in uncovering the unknown coefficients of the wildfire model in one- and two-dimensional fire spreading scenarios as well as the Troy Fire. Additionally, this methodology exhibits robustness by identifying the same parameters even in the presence of noisy data. By integrating this PiNN approach into a comprehensive framework, the envisioned physics-informed digital twin will enhance intelligent wildfire management and risk assessment, providing a powerful tool for proactive and reactive strategies. The development of microprocessor technology has led to the creation of new types of instrument transformers that were not previously used in the electric power industry. Their characteristics require additional study of existing relay protection and automation algorithms and allow to develop of new ones. However, serious theoretical and experimental studies in all possible operating modes should precede the using of such algorithms. This article describes some aspects of the implementation of overcurrent protection that receives information in digital form from Rogowski coils and resistive voltage dividers, considering the key features and advantages of these type of sensors. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, the moment matching techniques are adopted to obtain reduced-order closed-loop systems with reduced-order controllers that maintain the closed-loop stability and guarantee desired asymptotic performance, after revealing the relationship between the Internal Model Principle used in control design and the time-domain moment matching problem. As a result, the design of a low order controller can be done starting from considering the achieving of asymptotic performance as a moment matching problem, resulting in a reduced order closed-loop system. This paper introduces a modified nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-Ⅱ(NSGA-Ⅱ) to deal with nine objectives for a PI controller tuning problem. With the preferability operator which consists of goals and priorities, the optimal solutions are determined according to the setting preferability rather than conventional weak dominance. In addition, pre-clustering analysis is also utilized in the optimization process to reduce computational cost. The final results show that all objectives are satisfied with better performances comparing with the conventional NSGA-II, which proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this modified method.

The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the design parameters, operational characteristics and performance evaluation of a modular step-down DC-DC converter. The converter is engineered for applications demanding high-output current, featuring an input voltage of 48 V and an output voltage of 1 V. When operating in the single-stage voltage regulator module (VRM), its modular architecture is optimized to minimize resistive losses. Noteworthy is the integration of an input capacitor divider to alleviate voltage stress of components. Additionally, special attention is given to the impact of parasitic parameters on the converter's performance. Through a meticulous examination of system topology, validated by observed current and voltage waveforms, and analytical comparison to classic interleave converters, this study elucidates the operational intricacies of the converter. The findings, anchored in the context of a MOSFET-based four-module converter rated for a maximum power output of 350 W at 1 V, provide valuable insights for the design and optimization of similar power conversion systems.

In this article, a nonlinear strategy based on a flatness approach is used for controlling the instantaneous complex power supplied from the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) to a weak grid. To this end, the strategy introduced by the authors in [1] considering a strong grid is robustified for avoiding system instability when the converter is connected to an unknown grid. The robustification method consists of including a notch filter that estimates the PCC voltage and using it to build the controller (i.e. the measured PCC voltage used to design the control strategy for a strong grid is replaced by the PCC voltage estimated with the notch filter). In addition, before designing the controller, the steady-state stability and safe operation limits when injecting complex instantaneous power to a grid of unknown impedance are analyzed. This analysis is independent of the control strategy, and applies to all power injection schemes. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), a technique for depositing multilayer high-quality thin films at the atomic level, has an important role in the manufacture of semiconductor materials and is the most promising technology for modern electronic and communication devices. To obtain impurity-free homogeneous thin films, MBE requires an ultra-high vacuum producing environment. However, maintaining such an environment on Earth is challenging due to high cost. According to statistics from Siberian Institute of Semiconductors and Physics, over 75% of the cost is spent on vacuum pumping and energy consumption. As the cost of entering space continues to decrease, we propose to implement semiconductor production with MBE in space. Specifically, using the Chinese Space Station (CSS) to haul a molecular screen (MS), when the MS travels at 7.9 km/s, the gas density behind the MS decreases significantly, and the pressure is approximately 10-8-10-10 Pa, which meets the requirements of MBE technology. In order to design a MS that meets the requirements, its material and structure need to be investigated. In this paper, a metal matrix composite is designed to reduce the outgassing rate of the MS under the influence of space radiation and temperature changes. In terms of the structural design of the MS, we propose a deformable disk-shaped structure, which is in shrinking state during rocket's launch to save load space and spreads out after entering space. The front of the MS serves as a natural barrier, preventing gas molecules and particles with low thermal motion velocities from entering the MBE growth area. The periphery of the MS is angled at 45° to the front to prevent hydrogen and helium molecules with high thermal motion velocities diffusing into the wake region from the side. In summary, we design a MS that creates conditions for using MBE technology to produce semiconductor materials in space. In this work, a non-linear controller designed using non-linear transformation linearization and feedback is proposed for an inverter connected to a weak grid through a single-stage inductive filter. The proposed strategy is self-synchronized, so that it is not necessary to have a voltage sensor at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The strategy allows to robustify, in the presence of a weak grid, a strategy that has already been demonstrated to allow a significant reduction in the size of the DC-link capacitor of the converter. For this purpose, a state observer is designed that allows estimating the voltage at the PCC from the measurement of the output inductor current. A start-up controller is also included, which allows synchronization even in the case of system start-up. Simulation results are presented for different operating cases, including start-up, normal operation, and grid-voltage sags and swells. In all these cases, it is considered that the exact parameters of the grid to which the inverter is connected are unknown. © 2024, CC BY-SA.
