Power electronic converters due to their inherent switching nature introduce nonlinearity in an electric drive system. That is sometimes exhibited in the form of the coexistence of several stable regimes (or attractors) for the same set of parameters and inputs, referred to as multistability. We study the behavior of a chopper-fed DC drive for the several sets of parameters and inputs, when the system exhibits multistability, in the presence of noise. In particular, we qualitatively characterize the coexisting attractors by what we call their robustness to noise, by comparing the level of noise required to observe the noise-induced tipping from one attractor into another. We depict that the "main" attractor (related to the nominal operation of the drive) is the most robust-to-noise one among the coexisting for all cases being analyzed. In those terms we explain the drive’s behavior in the noisy environment—whether the effect of multistability takes the form of tipping or intermittency. © 2021 IEEE.

Vehicular networks, also known as Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), have become a crucial technology for vehicle communication, providing wireless connectivity among vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure. However, the dynamic and complex nature of these networks presents unique challenges in routing and resource management. In this study, we explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the performance of vehicular networks, focusing on two widely used routing protocols: Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV).We aim to evaluate the performance of these traditional routing protocols within the context of vehicular networks by integrating machine learning techniques such as neural network regression (MLRegression). Our goal is to understand how the integration of artificial intelligence can enhance the prediction and optimization of vehicular network performance. Using MLRegression, we aim to develop accurate prediction models for performance metrics such as latency, throughput, packet delivery rate, and more, based on network parameters and environmental conditions. This comparative evaluation, which involves incorporating an AI-based approach, will allow us to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each protocol and provide recommendations for improving vehicular networks.

This paper presents a model-free controller based on particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO-MFC) for the altitude systems of a Mini-Drone. A model-free control (MFC) is applied to improve both trajectory tracking and robustness of quadrotor in the presence of external uncertainties and disturbance. The problem of Tuning MFC parameters designed is formulated as an optimization problem according to time domain objective function that is solved by PSO algorithm to find the most optimistic results. In order to prove the robustness of the proposed algorithm, an extensive set of numerical results are presented using a real Simulink Template for Parrot Mini-Drone platform. Results evaluation show that the proposed control scheme achieves good performance for altitude system compared to the controller without optimization. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2021.

Single phase to earth fault is the prevailing type of damage in 6-10 kV medium voltage networks. The most dangerous of single phase to earth faults is intermittent arc earth faults, which are accompanied by significant overvoltage in electrically connected network. In 6-10 kV distribution networks in the function of earth fault protection device during the impossibility of simple and sustainable zero sequence current protection devices, directional zero sequence current protection devices are commonly used. According to the data from operating experience the main disadvantage of some directional zero sequence current protection devices is refusal-to-operate possibility during internal faults and unnecessary operation during external intermittent arc faults. That is why, the research and substantiation of directional zero sequence current protection devices realization principles, which can provide high dynamic stability of protection operation is the relevant objective. The main tendency of development of relay protection equipment, including single phase to earth protection devices is associated with introduction of microprocessor technologies and digital signal processing methods. Thus, in this work the research of functioning of protection devices during transient modes is made for digital-based performance of zero sequence current protection devices. © 2020 IEEE.

The characteristic of the problem, relevance of the paper. At the present time in electric power industry a concept of intelligent electrical power system is realized. A key component of this system is a digital substation. One of the main tasks of digital substation equipment is realization of effective relay protection and network automation devices. Relatively new phenomenon in this field is relay protection devices, which are based on travelling wave parameters measurement. A very important characteristic of relay protection devices (especially for extra-high voltage transmission lines of 330-750 kV) is their speed-of-response. The usage of travelling wave-based principle will allow to limit speed-of-response only by travelling wave propagation time along a protected transmission line. © 2020 IEEE.

The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into power grids presents a significant challenge for sustainability due to their dynamic charging demands and the need to accommodate renewable energy sources. Existing optimization methods often fail to adequately address the complexity of this problem. In this study, propose a novel approach that combines Sine Hunter-Prey Optimization (SHPO) with Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) to dynamically optimize EV charging for sustainable power grid operation. Traditional optimization methods struggle to capture the nonlinear and time-varying nature of EV charging demands and renewable energy availability. To overcome this limitation, SHPO's ability to efficiently explore complex solution spaces and GRUs' capability to model temporal dependencies in sequential data. This proposed method optimizes EV charging schedules by considering grid stability, renewable energy utilization, and cost minimization. Validating the approach using historical data on EV charging patterns, renewable energy generation, and grid conditions. Performance metrics include grid stability indices, renewable energy integration rates, and cost savings compared to baseline strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that the method outperforms traditional optimization techniques, leading to more sustainable and resilient power grid operation with 92% stability. Overall, this study contributes to advancing the modern methods in dynamic optimization of EV charging, paving the way for more sustainable transportation and energy systems.

Modelling the connection between propagating disturbances and solar spicules

Aims. Propagating (intensity) disturbances (PDs) are well reported in observations of coronal loops and polar plumes in addition to recent links with co-temporal spicule activity in the solar atmosphere. However, despite being reported in observations, they are yet to be studied in depth and understood from a modelling point of view. Methods. In this work, we present results from a 3D MHD numerical model featuring a stratified solar atmosphere which is perturbed by a p-mode wave driver at the photosphere, subsequently forming spicules described by the rebound shock model. Results. Features with striking characteristics to those of detected PDs appear consistent with the co-temporal transition region dynamics and spicular activity resulting from nonlinear wave steepening and shock formation. Furthermore, the PDs can be interpreted as slow magnetoacoustic pulses propagating along the magnetic field, rather than high speed plasma upflows, carrying sufficient energy flux to at least partially heat the lower coronal plasma. Using forward modelling, we demonstrate the similarities between the PDs in the simulations and those reported in observations from IRIS and SDO/AIA. Conclusions. Our results suggest that, in the presented model, the dynamical movement of the transition region is a result of wave dynamics and shock formation in the lower solar atmosphere, and that PDs are launched co-temporally with the rising of the transition region, regardless of the wave-generating physical mechanisms occurring in the underlying lower solar atmosphere. However, it is clear that signatures of PDs appear much clearer when a photospheric wave driver is included. In this paper, we consider constrained optimization problems with convex, smooth objective and constraints. We propose a new stochastic gradient algorithm, called the Stochastic Moving Ball Approximation (SMBA) method, to solve this class of problems, where at each iteration we first take a gradient step for the objective function and then perform a projection step onto one ball approximation of a randomly chosen constraint. The computational simplicity of SMBA, which uses first-order information and considers only one constraint at a time, makes it suitable for large-scale problems with many functional constraints. We provide a convergence analysis for the SMBA algorithm using basic assumptions on the problem, that yields new convergence rates in both optimality and feasibility criteria evaluated at some average point. Our convergence proofs are novel since we need to deal properly with infeasible iterates and with quadratic upper approximations of constraints that may yield empty balls. We derive convergence rates of order O(k−1/2) when the objective function is convex, and O(k−1) when the objective function is strongly convex. Preliminary numerical experiments on quadratically constrained quadratic problems demonstrate the viability and performance of our method when compared to some existing state-of-the-art optimization methods and software. © 2024, CC BY.

While the $$H_\infty $$ observer-based control has found widespread application in the literature for integer-order systems, researchers have shown less interest in addressing the same issue within the fractional-order framework. In this context, this study delves into the application of $$H_\infty $$ observer-based control for the Hadamard fractional-order system (HFOS) described by the Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy models (TSFM). Using Lyapunov approach and by employing a matrix decoupling technique, LMI based conditions ensuring the existence of an observer and controller, are proposed. To minimize the impact of disturbances on the controlled output, $$H_\infty $$ optimization technique is used. The validity of our approach is substantiated through an example, underscoring the robustness and reliability of our proposed findings.

In distribution cable networks of medium voltage (in Russia 6–10 kV), the most common type of damage is single-phase ground fault (SPGF). In an unearthing system, a significant part of the SPGF has an intermittent arc character, which is accompanied by intense transients that have a significant impact on the selectivity and stability of operation, both directional and non-directional current protection against this type of damage. The most effective method for studying the dynamic modes of operation of protection devices against these types of SPGF is a simulation. One of the most difficult tasks arising in the development of simulation protection models is the modeling of zero-sequence cable current transformers. The article is devoted to the development of a simulation model of a zero-sequence electromagnetic current transformer in Simulink, which allows simulate both steady-state and transient SPGF modes with sufficient accuracy at various secondary loads, taking into account the influence of magnetic circuit saturation. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.
