MI3SE: A Multi-User Index-Based Searchable Symmetric Encryption Scheme for Improving Security of Data in Connected Electronic Devices

In the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), outdoor electronic devices serve crucial roles across sectors, providing vital data for decision-making. However, their exposure to open outdoor environments makes them vulnerable to unauthorized access, physical theft, or compromise, endangering both the device and its data. Ensuring the security of outdoor devices and their data is thus critical. This study addresses data security in outdoor IIoT devices by supporting the encryption of all IIoT-related data in device memory. Accessing and retrieving this data requires operations on encrypted data. Hence, we introduce a Searchable Symmetric Encryption (SSE) scheme called MI3SE, which ensures each device's encryption key is unique and valid for a period based on the device's security sensitivity. Moreover, MI3SE meets key security requirements, including confidentiality, integrity, forward secrecy, and backward secrecy. It is specifically designed to mitigate physical compromise and query pattern analysis through a two-keyword query approach and withstand various attacks, as validated by rigorous security analysis. Comparative evaluations against benchmark schemes underscore the efficacy of MI3SE in terms of both security and performance. Moreover, comprehensive non-mathematical security analysis and simulation experiments affirm the enhanced accuracy and efficacy of MI3SE in securing sensitive data stored in outdoor IIoT devices. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Modification of Grilles to Improve the Lavatory Environment on an Aircraft

Lavatories on commercial aircraft are frequently accessed by passengers and crew members. The lavatory environment is greatly subject to the adopted ventilation strategy, or more specifically the adopted air supply, air exhaust, and the grilles used for air supplementation. In most aircraft lavatories, grilles with bent louvers are present on the lavatory door near the floor, for air supplementation. The strong airflow generated by flushing of the toilet not only produces aerosols inside the toilet bowl but also resuspends deposited particles from the lavatory floor. To improve the lavatory environment, this investigation proposed three ventilation approaches: the use of grilles with straight louvers on the lavatory door near the floor, grilles with bent louvers on the door near the ceiling, and grilles with bent louvers on the lavatory sidewall. The airflow and the concentrations of a tracer gas released into the toilet bowl were measured. Next, the measurement data were used to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. After that, the airflow, the transport of particles released from the toilet bowl and lavatory floor, respectively, the distribution of an odorous gas released from the toilet bowl, and the draught risk in terms of the percentage dissatisfied were modelled by CFD. The results revealed that the original grilles with bent louvers near the bottom of the door may not be effective in minimizing the particle exposure or the odorous gas dispersion. Placement of the grilles on the lavatory sidewall generally performed better and thus is recommended for use on commercial aircraft. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Challenges for using robots in operational centrifuges are robust structures with low mass, mechanical design for movement at high vibration and high gravity (gs), orientation of components to avoid deflection, and advanced controllers to reduce vibration. The importance of centrifuge modelling resides in the capacity of physical simulation of large scale models with a small scale model. This paper presents the novel design and development of a flexible actuation control system (FACS) to control multiple stepper motors that use robots within an operational centrifuge. The novel design is robust and symmetric in order to withstand forces equivalent to 30 times earth’s gravitational acceleration (30g). Moreover, the FACS and its control software are flexible and generic in order to serve for different applications. The components of the system were selected and the components’ layout (location and orientation) was designed to support 30gs and fit within a box of 42 cm × 34 cm × 22 cm. A graphical user interface was developed in LabVIEW to control four motors. Different types of motion control such as judge, jog, synchronized, unsynchronized, absolute and relative positioning were implemented. The FACS was validated with a cone penetration test (CPT) and the results are discussed. An actuator was used to perform the CPT whilst the centrifuge was rotating and achieving 30gs. The case study probed the flexible application of the FACS, its robustness to g field and its performance. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Metastasis driven by cancer cell migration is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. It involves significant changes in the organization of the cytoskeleton, which includes the actin microfilaments and the vimentin intermediate filaments. Understanding how these filament change cells from normal to invasive offers insights that can be used to improve cancer diagnosis and therapy. We have developed a computational, transparent, large-scale and imaging-based pipeline, that can distinguish between normal human cells and their isogenically matched, oncogenically transformed, invasive and metastasizing counterparts, based on the spatial organization of actin and vimentin filaments in the cell cytoplasm. Due to the intricacy of these subcellular structures, manual annotation is not trivial to automate. We used established deep learning methods and our new multi-attention channel architecture. To ensure a high level of interpretability of the network, which is crucial for the application area, we developed an interpretable global explainable approach correlating the weighted geometric mean of the total cell images and their local GradCam scores. The methods offer detailed, objective and measurable understanding of how different components of the cytoskeleton contribute to metastasis, insights that can be used for future development of novel diagnostic tools, such as a nanometer level, vimentin filament-based biomarker for digital pathology, and for new treatments that significantly can increase patient survival. © 2024

In this paper we consider large-scale composite optimization problems having the objective function formed as a sum of two terms (possibly nonconvex), one has (block) coordinate-wise Lipschitz continuous gradient and the other is differentiable but nonseparable. Under these general settings we derive and analyze two new coordinate descent methods. The first algorithm, referred to as coordinate proximal gradient method, considers the composite form of the objective function, while the other algorithm disregards the composite form of the objective and uses the partial gradient of the full objective, yielding a coordinate gradient descent scheme with novel adaptive stepsize rules. We prove that these new stepsize rules make the coordinate gradient scheme a descent method, provided that additional assumptions hold for the second term in the objective function. We present a complete worst-case complexity analysis for these two new methods in both, convex and nonconvex settings, provided that the (block) coordinates are chosen random or cyclic. Preliminary numerical results also confirm the efficiency of our two algorithms on practical problems. © 2022, CC BY.

The paper presents a piecewise geometric parameterization method and a parametric analysis of uniaxial capacitance accelerometer using a reduced model formulated on the modal superposition method. The extraction of parameters for the macromodel such as modal frequencies, modal masses, modal stiffnesses, strain energy, and capacitances are described. The reduced model consists of the two modes: torsion mode, and transversal mode, three electrodes in the electrostatic domain, and eight master nodes in the geometrical domain located at the edges of the plate. The generation of the discrete macromodels is executed using commercial software. The thickness of the plate has been selected as a design parameter. Linear piecewise interpolation is used for macromodel parameterization which have been done inside VHDL-AMS code. The accelerometer’s dynamic response simulated using of parametrized macromodel considering the mechanical contact phenomena and the nonlinear electrostatic interaction are presented and discussed. The developed approach can be applied for fast system level simulations in view of the variation of the geometric parameters.

Concepts of Self-maintaining robots and their design

— This paper proposes an initial theory for robotic systems that can be fully self-maintaining. The new design principles focus on functional survival of the robots over long periods of time without human maintenance. Self-maintaining semi-autonomous mobile robots are in great demand in nuclear disposal sites from where their removal for maintenance is undesirable due to their radioactive contamination. Similar are requirements for robots in various defence tasks or space missions. For optimal design, modular solutions are balanced against capabilities to replace smaller components in a robot by itself or by help from another robot. Modules are proposed for the basic platform, which enable self-maintenance within a team of robots helping each other. The primary method of self-maintenance is replacement of malfunctioning modules or components by the robots themselves. Replacement necessitates a robot team’s ability to diagnose and replace malfunctioning modules as needed. Due to their design, these robots still remain manually re-configurable if opportunity arises for human intervention. Apart from the basic principles, an evolutionary design approach is presented and a first mathematical theory of the reliability of a team of self-maintaining robots is introduced. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Recursive Time-Sensor Domain Data Decomposition: A Novel Method for Time-Varying Process Monitoring

Process monitoring aims to timely detect faults or abnormal conditions, ensuring safety and achieving satisfactory product quality. Time-varying processes are common in various industries, including chemical, semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing. A key challenge in time-varying process monitoring is how to accommodate deterministic but unknown time-varying trends in process responses. Existing multivariate statistical process monitoring (MSPM) approaches designed for time-varying processes face challenges including intensive computation and worse adaption to unknown process changes. In this study, a new process monitoring approach is proposed based on a novel idea referred to as recursive time-sensor decomposition (RTSD). The multi-sensor data are compressed into dominant time and sensor domain components. In the time domain, the feature vectors are extracted to represent process states. In the sensor domain, the process information distributed across different sensors is used to accommodate the normal time-varying trend and determine the control limit. The proposed approach is validated first by analysing a simulated time-varying process and then by an application of monitoring tool wear states in a real milling experiment. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is highly effective, has higher fault detection rates and lower false alarm rates when compared to existing methods, and is applicable in a real time-varying industrial process. © 2024, The Authors. This work addresses the problem of recursive state estimation for networked control systems with unknown nonlinearities and binary-encoding mechanisms (BEMs). To enhance transmission reliability and reduce network resource consumption, BEMs are used to convert measurement signals into binary bit strings (BBSs) of limited length, which are then transmitted to the estimator through noisy communication channels. During transmission, random bit errors may occur in the BBSs due to channel noise. For the considered nonlinear networked control systems affected by random bit errors, a neural-network (NN)-based recursive estimation strategy is proposed, where an NN with a time-varying tuning scalar is employed to approximate the unknown nonlinearity of the networked control systems. By using the proposed strategy, the upper bounds of the estimation error of the system state and the trace of the estimation error of the NN weight (NNW) are first derived. These bounds are then minimized by recursively designing both the estimator gain matrix and the tuning scalar of the NNW. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation strategy is demonstrated through a numerical example.
