Global agriculture is facing major challenges such as food security, sustainable water management, and the preservation of natural resources. Water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, requires adopting more efficient agricultural practices. Traditional irrigation systems, often imprecise, contribute to water wastage. The use of embedded systems and machine learning offers a solution for optimizing irrigation according to local conditions and actual crop needs while contributing to food security and environmental sustainability. This study proposes an innovative approach to irrigation management, integrating real-time data and predictive models to improve irrigation efficiency. This study proposes an irrigation system based on embedded systems, using sensors and algorithms to collect and analyze data in order to optimize water management. The system adjusts irrigation levels according to specific crop needs, thus contributing to more sustainable water management. Using ML algorithms like linear regression algorithms to model the relationships between environmental factors and crop water requirements, enabling accurate prediction of required irrigation levels based on data collected by sensors. The use of embedded systems such as the ESP32, combined with temperature, humidity, and water level sensors, has enabled the development of an autonomous and efficient system for collecting data in real-time and processing it for decision-making. The proposed model has an MAE of 0.8434, an RMSE of 0.8434, and a coefficient (R2 Score) of 0.4044, offering soil moisture prediction accuracy. Furthermore, the training time of our model is 0.00253 seconds, while the prediction time is 0.00117 seconds. These results show not only the performance of the proposed model in terms of accuracy but also its computational efficiency, outperforming some of the studies mentioned. With increasing numbers of mobile robots arriving in real-world applications, more robots coexist in the same space, interact, and possibly collaborate. Methods to provide such systems with system size scalability are known, for example, from swarm robotics. Example strategies are self-organizing behavior, a strict decentralized approach, and limiting the robot-robot communication. Despite applying such strategies, any multi-robot system breaks above a certain critical system size (i.e., number of robots) as too many robots share a resource (e.g., space, communication channel). We provide additional evidence based on simulations, that at these critical system sizes, the system performance separates into two phases: nearly optimal and minimal performance. We speculate that in real-world applications that are configured for optimal system size, the supposedly high-performing system may actually live on borrowed time as it is on a transient to breakdown. We provide two modeling options (based on queueing theory and a population model) that may help to support this reasoning.

Accurate short-term network-wide traffic prediction is essential to guarantee high service quality in urban traffic control systems. Nevertheless, traffic state time series represent network-scale spatiotemporal co-movement patterns and location-specific features. Therefore, hybrid statistical machine learning (ml) algorithms could be utilized to accommodate the aforementioned characteristics. In this paper, a hybrid random forest (rf) and extreme gradient boosting tree (XGBoost) model is introduced for network-wide traffic prediction. Moreover, a multi-noise oriented basis wavelet transform (OBT) filter is employed to pre-process the original time series, and improve the predictive accuracy. The RF model captures the traffic co-movements and the XGBoost extracts the local information. Comparative analysis of the hybrid algorithm and deep learning-based benchmarks indicate better performance of the proposed methodology in hourly traffic state prediction of 30 loop detectors, located in the paris city center. Hence, the hybrid decision-tree-based mechanism is a useful framework for real-time network traffic forecasting offering fewer trainable (hyper-)parameters, and thus, lower computational cost.

An energy model of an electrohydraulic complex has been developed. It allows analyzing the energy processes in the power channel in dynamic modes during the development of cavitation and turbulent oscillations in the pipeline network. It has been shown that the nature of energy processes in the considered cases is periodic constant power fluctuations in the analyzed time interval. The variable component in technological and energy signals of the electrohydraulic complex has been assessed. Their frequency analysis has been performed. The coefficient of power controllability of the electrohydraulic complex and its critical values, whereat the development of emergency modes is possible, have been determined.

This article presents a novel method for controlling a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind energy system in the presence of variable wind speeds. In order to achieve decoupling control of the active and reactive power, the rotor-side converter (RSC) of the DFIG is controlled using field-oriented control (FOC). The system is very complicated and nonlinear, making it challenging to adjust the PI gains appropriately. The present research proposes the utilization of the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm as an approach to optimize the gains of a Proportional-Integral (PI) regulator. The simulation results demonstrate that the GWO-PI provides a lower criterion value and an improved response than the conventional PI.

Networked control systems typically come with a limited communication bandwidth and thus require special care when designing the underlying control and triggering law. A method that allows to consider hard constraints on the communication traffic as well as on states and inputs is self-triggered model predictive control (MPC). In this scheme, the optimal length of the sampling interval is determined proactively using predictions of the system behavior. However, previous formulations of self-triggered MPC have neglected the widespread phenomenon of packet loss, such that these approaches might fail in practice. In this paper, we present a novel self-triggered MPC scheme which is robust to bounded packet loss by virtue of a min-max optimization problem. We prove recursive feasibility, constraint satisfaction and convergence to the origin for any possible packet loss realization consistent with the boundedness constraint, and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme in a numerical example.

In this paper, we present a distributed algorithm which implements the k-means algorithm in a distributed fashion for multi-agent systems with directed communication links. The goal of k-means is to partition the network’s agents in mutually exclusive sets (groups) such that agents in the same set have (and possibly share) similar information and are able to calculate a representative value for their group. During the operation of our distributed algorithm, each node (i) transmits quantized values in an event-driven fashion, and (ii) exhibits distributed stopping capabilities. Transmitting quantized values leads to more efficient usage of the available bandwidth and reduces the communication bottleneck. Also, in order to preserve available resources, nodes are able to distributively determine whether they can terminate the operation of the proposed algorithm. We characterize the properties of the proposed distributed algorithm and show that its execution (on any static and strongly connected digraph) will partition all agents to mutually exclusive clusters in finite time. We conclude with examples that illustrate the operation, performance, and potential advantages of the proposed algorithm. © 2022, CC BY.

If a concatenated Friedkin-Johnsen model is used to describe the evolution of the opinions of stubborn agents in a sequence of discussion events, then the social power achieved by the agents at the end of the discussions depends from the stubbornness coefficients adopted by the agents through the sequence of events. In this paper we assume that the agents are free to choose their stubbornness profiles, and ask ourselves what strategy should an agent follow in order to maximize its social power. Formulating the problem as a strategic game, we show that choosing the highest possible values of stubbornness in the early discussions leads to the highest possible social power.

A double-circuit automatic control system (ACS) of the electric mode (EM) of an arc furnace (AF) is developed. A model of a fuzzy phase-asymmetric rule for arc length regulation is proposed. A block diagram is developed and the design of an element for generating a mismatch signal of EM for AF is carried out according to the developed fuzzy rule. A Simulink-model of the developed double-circuit ACS of EM has been developed and comparative computer simulations of the quality indicators of controlling the EM coordinates for the proposed double-circuit structure of the ACS and the serial arc power regulator ARDM-T-12 of the DSP-200 arc furnace are carried out. The results of the comparative analysis have shown an improvement in a number of AF energy efficiency indicators and an increase in the dynamic accuracy of EM coordinate stabilization when regulating random disturbances by the double-circuit structure as compared to the arc power regulator ARDM-T-12.

it is shown that long-term operation of electrohydraulic complexes is accompanied by a change in the parameters of the hydraulic system: the resistance and reactance of the pump and the pipeline network. It is noted that the existing methods for determining hydraulic resistances are approximate and do not take into account the properties of the pumped liquid and an increase in pipe roughness caused by wear. The possibility of determining the parameters of the electrohydraulic complexes based on the equations of the energy balance, formulated for the equivalent electrical circuit based on the method of electrohydraulic analogy, is shown. It is found out that the system of identification equations should be grounded on the equations of the energy balance of the harmonic power components between the hydraulic power source and the elements of the hydraulic system. To expand the number of identification equations at the input of the system, it is necessary to generate a test signal including constant and time-variable components. © 2020 IEEE.
