This paper considers the problem of structured observer synthesis for linear-time-invariant (LTI) systems. The importance of the problem is demonstrated through two motivational examples: utilizing high-fidelity black-box models as part of observers, and anti-windup gain design. The problem is connected with its control counterpart: static output feedback, and the process is illustrated through the design of an anti-windup gain for a multi-variable PID controller. A numerical example shows how the resulting closed-loop system converges faster than a recent method in the literature, with the added benefit of solving the problem with a non-iterative method, which decreases the computational effort.

Modern societies have an abundance of data yet good system models are rare. Unfortunately, many of the current system identification and machine learning techniques fail to generalize outside of the training set, producing models that violate basic physical laws. This work proposes a novel method for the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics with Side Information (SINDy-SI). SINDy-SI is an iterative method that uses Sum-of-Squares (SOS) programming to learn optimally fitted models while guaranteeing that the learned model satisfies side information, such as symmetries and physical laws. Guided by the principle of Occam's razor, that the simplest or most regularized best fitted model is typically the superior choice, during each iteration SINDy-SI prunes the basis functions associated with small coefficients, yielding a sparse dynamical model upon termination. Through several numerical experiments we will show how the combination of side information constraints and sparse polynomial representation cultivates dynamical models that obey known physical laws while displaying impressive generalized performance beyond the training set.

The combination of Electric Autonomous Vehicles (EAVs) and renewable energy aligns with sustainability goals. However, to achieve these goals, it’s necessary to implement a robust control system for the key component that drives the vehicle, specifically, the electric motor. This paper explores the control of Induction Motor pursuing the Required Performance Standards for Autonomous Vehicles. The primary objective is to build a robust control system to achieve this, the first approach is the Indirect Rotor Field Oriented control (IFOC), the Latter is implemented along with a PI controller, Lastly Model Reference Adaptive control by Hyperstability Criterion is introduced. A detailed analysis is carried out using MATLAB Simulink, which shows the efficiency of adaptive control not only in speed tracking, but also in parameter variation and disturbance. The comparative analysis between PI and Hyperstability control method validates the theory asserting the robustness and insensitivity of adaptive control to parameter uncertainty and disturbances. Furthermore, it convincingly demonstrates that the latter outperforms traditional classic controllers. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset. © 2023 International Society of Information Fusion.

The transition towards electric aircraft is particularly challenging due to the relatively low specific energy densities of electrical energy storage systems. If electric aircraft are to be realised, flight paths must be optimised to take advantage of the unique features of electric propulsion systems. In this paper, the problem of determining the optimal flight trajectories for aircraft powered by a combination of a fuel cell stack and lithium-ion battery pack is considered. Particular emphasis is given to the role of the battery pack's temperature and in-flight charging requirements on the results. Solutions that minimise the fuel consumption and the flight time are first considered. For both cases, the optimal solution was observed to discharge the battery during the climb with only minimal in-flight recharging of the battery by the fuel cell. A scenario that requires a fast climb and descent and the battery to be charged upon arrival was identified and shown to lead to an oscillatory profile for optimal in-flight charging. These results demonstrate the potential of solving optimal control problems to generate tailored electric aircraft trajectories.

There has a been a growing interest in virtual laboratories as a supplement to hardware laboratories in supporting student learning and experience. This paper focuses specifically on virtual laboratories built using the MATLAB environment and highlights some recent developments. Specifically, these virtual laboratories aim to give users an overview of the core content of an entire 1st course in control in a single virtual laboratory interface. This paper highlights two such laboratories and shows how they can be used to supplement other learning resources and activities.

This paper considers the problem of static output feedback (SOF) synthesis for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. Static output feedback, and more generally structured controller synthesis, is of special interest to any industrial application where a reduced-order controller is desired, e.g., high-order systems, or a specific structure is to be imposed, i.e., distributed/decentralised control. A simple two-step process is proposed, solving one Riccati equation and one optimisation problem with linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints, enabled via a dilation using the distance to the full-state feedback optimum gain. Numerical analysis shows considerable computational savings, with negligible differences in the performance, when compared to current iterative methods.

The Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) algorithm has shown great efficacy in extracting features for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), particularly in motor imagery BCIs. However, CSP performs poorly when dealing with limited labeled data, which leads to long calibration time at the beginning of each session. To overcome this challenge, we leverage source data, i.e., labeled data from other subjects, to transfer knowledge across subjects. This work proposes a novel approach termed Scaled and Warped CSP-based Transfer Learning (SW-CSP-TL). This method aligns source data with the temporal and amplitude structure of target data before computing CSP filters, ensuring optimization for capturing discriminative features relevant to the target domain. We evaluate the proposed SW-CSP-TL algorithm using the publicly available dataset 2a from BCI Competition IV and compare its performance with that of the classical CSP algorithm and the transfer learning CSP algorithm (CSP-TL) without amplitude scaling and temporal warping. Our algorithm exhibits superior performance particularly when the training data size is relatively small. Results demonstrate that for 5 and 15 training trials per class from the target session, SW-CSP-TL outperformed the classical CSP by an average of 10%, and 8%, respectively.

The paper considers the application of starting systems for induction motors powered by autonomous sources of limited power. The conditions for the formation of the starting torque of an induction motor with the formation of the required transient characteristics and the control of electromagnetic transient moments under conditions of power supply from a stationary network and an autonomous sources of energy supply of limited power are analyzed. Studies have been carried out on the implementation of the 'favorable' switching on mode of a three-phase induction motor powered by an autonomous generator according to the principle of creating non-zero initial conditions. An implementation algorithm has been developed and a technical solution has been proposed for the implementation of a starting device with the implementation of a 'quasi-favorable' method for switching on an induction motor under conditions of power supply from autonomous sources of energy supply. © 2022 IEEE.

By using Typhoon HIL simulator, a simulation research method of data injection attack against secondary control DC microgrid is established, which reveals the important influence of the attack function on the effectiveness and covertness of the attack. Firstly, a decentralized four-node DC microgrid system using TCP/IP Modbus protocol for communication is built in Typhoon HIL simulator, then, a microgrid security testing experimental platform based on the man-in-the-middle attack as a network attack method is built in Kali Linux system, which can carry out timed single- and multilinks data injection attacks and replay attack on the above four-node DC microgrid. The paper designs a variety of data injection attack schemes to study the impact of data injection attacks on voltage and current control in this DC microgrid, including single-link attack, multi-link composite attack, and replay attack using different attack functions. By controlling the main parameters of the attack function, the amplitude of the fluctuation of the output voltage generated by the attack can be controlled, which can produce a more covert and effective attack effect. © 2024 IEEE.
