This paper explores the evolution of word meanings in 19th-century Spanish texts, with an emphasis on Latin American Spanish, using computational linguistics techniques. It addresses the Semantic Shift Detection (SSD) task, which is crucial for understanding linguistic evolution, particularly in historical contexts. The study focuses on analyzing a set of Spanish target words. To achieve this, a 19th-century Spanish corpus is constructed, and a customizable pipeline for SSD tasks is developed. This pipeline helps find the senses of a word and measure their semantic change between two corpora using fine-tuned BERT-like models with old Spanish texts for both Latin American and general Spanish cases. The results provide valuable insights into the cultural and societal shifts reflected in language changes over time. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The rapid growth of machine learning(ML)across fields has intensified the challenge of selecting the right algorithm for specific tasks,known as the Algorithm Selection Problem(ASP).Traditional trial-and-error methods have become impractical due to their resource *** Machine Learning(AutoML)systems automate this process,but often neglect the group structures and sparsity in meta-features,leading to inefficiencies in algorithm recommendations for classification *** paper proposes a meta-learning approach using Multivariate Sparse Group Lasso(MSGL)to address these *** method models both within-group and across-group sparsity among meta-features to manage high-dimensional data and reduce multicollinearity across eight meta-feature *** Fast Iterative Shrinkage-Thresholding Algorithm(FISTA)with adaptive restart efficiently solves the non-smooth optimization *** validation on 145 classification datasets with 17 classification algorithms shows that our meta-learning method outperforms four state-of-the-art approaches,achieving 77.18%classification accuracy,86.07%recommendation accuracy and 88.83%normalized discounted cumulative gain.

Monitoring air quality and environmental conditions is crucial for public health and effective urban planning. Current environmental monitoring approaches often rely on centralized data collection and processing, which pose significant privacy, security, and scalability challenges. Federated Learning (FL) offers a promising solution to these limitations by enabling collaborative model training across multiple devices without sharing raw data. This decentralized approach addresses privacy concerns while still leveraging distributed data sources. This paper provides a comprehensive review of FL applications in air quality and environmental monitoring, emphasizing its effectiveness in predicting pollutants and managing environmental data. However, the paper also identifies key limitations of FL when applied in this domain, including challenges such as communication overhead, infrastructure demands, generalizability issues, computational complexity, and security vulnerabilities. For instance, communication overhead, caused by the frequent exchange of model updates between local devices and central servers, is a notable challenge. To address this, future research should focus on optimizing communication protocols and reducing the frequency of updates to lessen the burden on network resources. Additionally, the paper suggests further research directions to refine FL frameworks and enhance their applicability in real-world environmental monitoring scenarios. By synthesizing findings from existing studies, this paper highlights the potential of FL to improve air quality management while maintaining data privacy and security, and it provides valuable insights for future developments in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Worker activity recognition is a crucial area of research with significant applications in manufacturing, healthcare, and security. Traditional methods relying on computer vision-based algorithms often demand extensive infrastructure, such as video cameras. This study presents a more efficient approach by utilizing data from embedded sensors in smartphones and microcontrollers. These wearable devices capture worker activities, including walking, sitting, standing, laying, and climbing stairs, through accelerometer sensors. The data is transmitted and monitored via an IoT platform, where machine learning techniques are employed for activity recognition and classification. The k-NN and Naïve Bayes classifiers achieved the highest accuracy rates, with 77.8% for smartphones and 76.1% for microcontrollers. This system provides a practical solution for recognizing and monitoring worker activities, with potential applications in factories for enhancing health, safety, and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an advanced neuro-degenerative condition where a large number of people around the world are profoundly affected. The scarcity of precise data regarding the typical circumstances faced by humans with PD severely restricts ongoing research and therapeutic endeavours. This proposed work aims to investigate various innovations to address this issue comprehensively. Specifically, this proposed work intends to develop a versatile application tailored to help the PD patients and incorporating smart medication reminders. Moreover, this proposed work will focus on creating exercise/workout plans & diet plans based on continuous data collection and patient feedback to enhance prescription management while minimizing side effects. Simultaneously, initiatives aimed at reducing the stress level and improve mental health. The development and implementation of this versatile applications hold significant promise in improving patient outcomes. By addressing the dearth of accurate information and fostering a systematic support ecosystem, it aspires to enhance the lives of individuals grappling with PD on a global scale. © 2024 IEEE.

Clone detection provides insight about replicated fragments in a code base. With the rise of multi-language code bases, new techniques addressing cross-language code clone detection enable the analysis of polyglot systems. Such techniques have not yet been applied to the mobile apps’ domain, which are naturally polyglot. Native mobile app developers must synchronize their code base in at least two different programming languages. App synchronization is a difficult and time-consuming maintenance task, as features can rapidly diverge between platforms, and feature identification must be performed manually. Our goal is to provide an analysis framework to reduce the impact of app synchronization. A first step in this direction consists on a structural algorithm for cross-language clone detection exploiting the idea behind enriched concrete syntax trees. Such trees are used as a common intermediate representation built from programming languages’ grammars, to detect similarities between app code bases. Our technique finds code similarities with 79% precision for controlled tests where Type 1-3 clones are manually injected for the analysis of both single- and cross-language cases for Kotlin and Dart. We evaluate our tool on a corpus of 52 mobile apps identifying code similarities with a precision of 65% to 84% for the full application logic. © 2023 CIbSE 2023 - XXVI Ibero-American Conference on Software engineering. With the development of artificial intelligence, cloud-edge computing and virtual reality, the industrial design that originally depends on human imagination and computing power can be transitioned to metaverse applications in smart manufacturing, which offloads the services of metaverse to cloud and edge platforms for enhancing quality of service (QoS), considering inadequate computing power of terminal devices like industrial sensors and access points (APs). However, large overhead and privacy exposure occur during data transmission to cloud, while edge computing devices (ECDs) are at risk of overloading with redundant service requests and difficult central control. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a minority game (MG) based cloud-edge service offloading method named COM for metaverse manufacturing. Technically, MG possesses a distribution mechanism that can minimize reliance on centralized control, and gains its effectiveness in resource allocation. Besides, a dynamic control of cut-off value is supplemented on the basis of MG for better adaptability to network variations. Then, agents in COM (i.e., APs) leverage reinforcement learning (RL) to work on MG history, offloading decision, QoS mapping to state, action and reward, for further optimizing distributed offloading decision-making. Finally, COM is evaluated using a variety of real-world datasets of manufacturing. The results indicate that COM has 5.38% higher QoS and 8.58% higher privacy level comparing to benchmark method. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

User stories are a common notation for expressing requirements, especially in agile development projects. While user stories provide a detailed account of the functional requirements, they fail to deliver a holistic view of the domain. As such, they can be complemented with domain models that not only help gain this comprehensive view, but also serve as a basis for model-driven development. We focus on the task of recommending relationships between entities in a domain model, assuming that these entities were previously extracted from a user story collection either manually or through an automated tool. We investigate whether an approach based on supervised machine learning can recommend essential relationships in a domain model more accurately than state-of-the-art rule-based methods. Based on a collection of datasets that we manually labeled and a set of 32 features we engineered, we train a machine learning model by using a random forest classifier. The results indicate that our approach has higher precision and F1-score than the baseline rule-based methods. Our findings provide preliminary evidence of the suitability of using machine learning to support the development of domain models, especially in recommending relationships between related entities. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Good Governance of any country is reflected through transparency and accountability of its activities and the availability of information and open data in a timely manner to its citizens. The Right to Information (RTI) Act guides the government and its citizens to achieve the objectives availability, and effective communication between the government and society, hence leading to good governance. While there are about 135 countries globally who have adopted the RTI Act, the Act is yet to be fully enacted in Fiji and the advocacy and awareness about RTI is in the infancy stage. This study entails details of an RTI awareness initiative in Fiji through the design and implementation of an e-course. The RTI e-course was developed using Articulate Storyline 360 and integrated into a learning management platform - Moodle. The course was then piloted to the university students in Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu. The effectiveness of the course was measured in terms of course completion and collected feedback using an online questionnaire. The results from the Cronbach Alpha test showed that the RTI e-course was valid and reliable. Furthermore, the participants were satisfied with the design, structure and content of the e-course. The RTI e-course is the first-ever course on RTI as such this can be used by South Pacific countries to create awareness and educate their populace on their right to information. The awareness created will assist the people of the South Pacific to be more aware of the activities carried out by the government and eventually improve civic engagement and participation of the South Pacific populace to economic development of their society. © 2024 ACM.
