This paper introduces and discusses a recent standardization project by the MPEG group that aims at providing an interoperable file format tailored to the needs of the surveillance industry. The new standard is called Video Surveillance Application Format and extends the H.264 - AVC file format specification. Based on a review of the application requirements, the rationale is provided for the technical design choices, and an example system implementation is described in detail. This provides interoperability at the data format and metadata levels. An example reference implementation instantiates and tests the design. The resultant is the specification of a file format suitable for large-scale camera network deployment.

Even with the eyes closed, humans are able to grip an object with minimal force without such information as the coefficient of friction or the weight. Tactile sensors capable of detecting slippage are necessary for this gripping action to be realized in a robot hand. Heretofore, many slip sensors were developed and produced, but there was not a slip sensor of simple structure practical for installation on fingertips of a robot hand. Therefore, we propose a low-profile/lightweight slip sensor of simple structure. The special properties of pressure conductive rubber are utilized as a detection device in this sensor. In this paper, we discuss the results of trial manufacture and of slip detection property testing of this sensor. Moreover, we will report the results of slip prevention experiments by this prototype slip sensor, and indicate that the pressure conductive rubber is promising as a material of slip sensor.

Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications.

Slip detecting tactile sensors are essential to achieve a human-like gripping motion with a robot hand. In previous researches, we have proposed flexible, thin and lightweight slip sensor utilizing characteristics of pressure conductive rubber. However, It was hard for this sensor to distinguish between the object slip and the normal force change. Therefore, we consider the separative method using high frequency elements generated by object slipping. In this paper, we design the information processing method and developed the sensor detecting both contact and initial slip in high sensitivity and a simple composition.

In networked virtual environments, videoconferences or chatting over the Internet users are often graphically represented by virtual characters. Modeling realistic virtual heads of users suitable for animation implies a heavy artistic effort and resource cost. This paper introduces a system that generates a 3D model of a real human head with a little human intervention. The system receives five input orthogonal photographs of the human head and a generic template 3D model. It requires manual annotation of 94 feature points on each photograph. The same set of feature points must be selected on the template model in a preprocessing step that is done only once. computing process consists of two phases: a morphing and a coloring phase. In the morphing phase the template model is morphed in two steps using a radial basis function (RBF) to take a shape similar to the shape of the real human head. In the coloring phase the deformed model is colored using the input photographs based on a cubemap projection, which leads to a realistic appearance of the model while allowing for a real time performance. We show the use of the output model by automatically copying facial motions from the template model to the deformed model, while preserving the compliance of the motion to the MPEG-4 FBA standard.

Distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios.

With the emerging many-core paradigm, parallel programming must extend beyond its traditional realm of scientific applications. Converting existing sequential applications as well as developing next-generation software requires assistance from hardware, compilers and runtime systems to exploit parallelism transparently within applications. These systems must decompose applications into tasks that can be executed in parallel and then schedule those tasks to minimize load imbalance. However, many systems lack a priori knowledge about the execution time of all tasks to perform effective load balancing with low scheduling overhead. In this paper, we approach this fundamental problem using machine learning techniques first to generate performance models for all tasks and then applying those models to perform automatic performance prediction across program executions. We also extend an existing scheduling algorithm to use generated task cost estimates for online task partitioning and scheduling. We implement the above techniques in the pR framework, which transparently parallelizes scripts in the popular R language, and evaluate their performance and overhead with both a realworld application and a large number of synthetic representative test scripts. Our experimental results show that our proposed approach significantly improves task partitioning and scheduling, with maximum improvements of 21.8%, 40.3% and 22.1% and average improvements of 15.9%, 16.9% and 4.2% for LMM (a real R application) and synthetic test cases with independent and dependent tasks, respectively. © 2009 IEEE.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of Computer science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems, Experimental Design for Real- World systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The Learning by Reading and Learning to Read symposium explored two aspects of making natural language texts semantically accessible to, and processable by, machines. The Social Semantic
