As users increasingly require better quality of service from grids, resource management and scheduling mechanisms have to evolve in order to satisfy competing demands on limited resources. Traditional schedulers for grids are system centric and favour system performance over increasing userpsilas utility. On the other hand market oriented schedulers are price-based systems that favour users but are based solely on user valuations. This paper proposes a novel meta-scheduler that unifies the advantages of both the systems for benefiting both users and resources. In order to do that, we design a valuation metric for userpsilas applications and computational resources based on multi-criteria requirements of users and resource load. The meta-scheduler maps user applications to suitable distributed resources using a continuous double auction (CDA). Through simulation, we compare our scheduling mechanism against other common mechanisms used by current meta-schedulers. The results show that our meta-scheduler mechanism can satisfy more users than the others while still meeting traditional system-centric performance criteria such as average load and deadline of applications.

Jane sees 50 compiler errors as a challenge. John sees them as defeat. Psychology research suggests these contrasting reactions may stem from students' self-theories, or their beliefs about themselves. Jane's reaction is characteristic of a growth mindset, the idea that with hard work and persistence, one's intelligence can increase. John's behavior is in line with a fixed mindset, the belief that individuals are born with a certain amount of intelligence and there is little they can do to change it. Numerous studies of self-theories have shown that students with a growth mindset perform better in academic settings;they cope more effectively with challenges, maintain higher grades, and are less susceptible to stereotype threat. In this study we attempted a "saying is believing" intervention to encourage CS1 students to adopt a growth mindset both in general and towards programming. Despite notable success of this type of intervention in a non-CS context, our results offered few statistically significant differences both from pre-survey to post-survey and between control and intervention groups. Further, the statistically significant results we did find differed in direction between institutions (some students exhibited more growth response, others less). We analyzed further evidence to explore possible confounding issues including whether our intervention even registered with students and how students interpreted the questions which we used to assess their self-theories. The user-level brokers in grids consider individual application QoS requirements and minimize their cost without considering demands from other users. This results in contention for resources and sub-optimal schedules. Meta-scheduling in grids aims to address this scheduling problem, which is NP hard due to its combinatorial nature. Thus, many heuristic-based solutions using genetic algorithm (GA) have been proposed, apart from traditional algorithms such as greedy and FCFS. We propose a Linear Programming/Integer Programming model (LP/IP) for scheduling these applications to multiple resources. We also propose a novel algorithm LPGA (linear programming driven genetic algorithm) which combines the capabilities of LP and GA. The aim of this algorithm is to obtain the best meta-schedule for utility grids which minimize combined cost of all users in a coordinated manner. Simulation results show that our proposed integrated algorithm offers the best schedule having the minimum processing cost with negligible time overheard.

This keynote paper: presents a 21 st century vision of computing; identifies various computing paradigms promising to deliver the vision of computing utilities; defines Cloud computing and provides the architecture for creating market-oriented Clouds by leveraging technologies such as VMs; provides thoughts on market-based resource management strategies that encompass both customer-driven service management and computational risk management to sustain SLA-oriented resource allocation; presents some representative Cloud platforms especially those developed in industries along with our current work towards realising market-oriented resource allocation of Clouds by leveraging the 3rd generation Aneka enterprise Grid technology; reveals our early thoughts on interconnecting Clouds for dynamically creating an atmospheric computing environment along with pointers to future community research; and concludes with the need for convergence of competing IT paradigms for delivering our 21 st century vision.

Service level agreements (SLAs) between grid users and providers have been proposed as mechanisms for ensuring that the users' quality of service (QoS) requirements are met, and that the provider is able to realise utility from its infrastructure. This paper presents a bilateral protocol for SLA negotiation using the alternate offers mechanism wherein a party is able to respond to an offer by modifying some of its terms to generate a counter offer. We apply this protocol to the negotiation between a resource broker and a provider for advance reservation of compute nodes, and implement and evaluate it on a real grid system.

The Gridbus workflow management system (GWMS) is designed to execute scientific applications, expressed in the form of workflows, onto Grid and Cloud resources. With the help of this system, we demonstrate a computational and data-intensive Image Registration (IR) workflow for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) applications on Clouds and global Grids. We also present a demonstration of the Aneka System. Aneka is a .NET based Cloud software platform that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework supporting various programming models. We use distributed Grid and Cloud resources from Australia, Austria, France, Japan, and USA for the executions of image registration workflow, and resources from Melbourne University for executing map-reduce applications in Aneka cloud environment.

Summary form only given. Grids and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have emerged as popular platforms for the next generation parallel and distributed computing. In these environments, resources are geographically distributed, managed and owned by various organizations with different policies, and interconnected by wide-area networks or the Internet. This introduces a number of resource management and application scheduling challenges in the domain of security, resource and policy heterogeneity, fault tolerance, and dynamic resource conditions. In these dynamic distributed computing environments, it is hard and challenging to carry out resource management design studies in a repeatable and controlled manner as resources and users are autonomous and distributed across multiple organizations with their own policies. Therefore, simulations have emerged as the most feasible technique for analyzing policies for resource allocation. This paper presents emerging trends in distributed computing and their promises for revolutionizing the computing field, and identifies distinct characteristics and challenges in building them. We motivate opportunities for modeling and simulation communities and present our discrete-event grid simulation toolkit, called GridSim, used by researchers world-wide for investigating the design of utility-oriented computing systems such as data centers and grids. We present various case studies on the use of GridSim in modeling and simulation of business grids, parallel applications scheduling, workflow scheduling, and service pricing and revenue management.

The MapReduce programming model allows users to easily develop distributed applications in data centers. However, many applications cannot be exactly expressed with MapReduce due to their specific characteristics. For instance, genetic algorithms (GAs) naturally fit into an iterative style. That does not follow the two phase pattern of MapReduce. This paper presents an extension to the MapReduce model featuring a hierarchical reduction phase. This model is called MRPGA (MapReduce for parallel GAs), which can automatically parallelize GAs. We describe the design and implementation of the extended MapReduce model on a .NET-based enterprise grid system in detail. The evaluation of this model with its runtime system is presented using example applications.

In this paper some refinement of a novel control approach is reported that fits to the "traditional line of thinking" according to which in the most practical cases neither very precise, nor even complete system model is needed for obtaining precise control for dynamical systems. The validity of this statement is briefly pointed out in the most popular approaches as the main idea of the "Robust Sliding Mode / Variable Structure Controllers", in the Adaptive Inverse Dynamics and in the Slotine-Li Adaptive Controllers based on Lyapunov's 2nd Method, and in a recently published problem tackling using the simple geometric interpretation of the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). In the present approach the originally proposed convergent, iterative Cauchy sequences are nonlinearly moderated to adaptively control a coupled nonlinear system, the cart plus double pendulum serving as popular paradigm of dynamicall not very well conditioned systems. It is shown that the proposed moderation removes the small sharp fluctuation in the control torque that inherently belonged to the original solution without significantly degrading the control quality. This statement is substantiated by simulation results.
