In this paper a further step towards a novel approach to adaptive nonlinear control developed at Budapest Tech in the past few years is reported. Its main advantage in comparison with the complicated Lyapunov function based techniques is that its fundament is some simple geometric consideration allowing to formulate the control task as a Fixed Point Problem for the solution of which various Contractive Mappings can be created that generate Iterative Cauchy Sequences for Single Input - Single Output (SISO) systems. These sequences can converge to the fixed points that are the solutions of the control tasks. Recently alternative potential solutions were proposed and sketched by the use of special functions built up of the "response function" of the excited system under control. These functions have almost constant values apart from a finite region in which they have a "wrinkle" in the vicinity of the desired solution that is the "proper" fixed point of these functions. It was shown that at one of their sides these fixed points were repulsive, while at the opposite side they were attractive. It was shown, too, that at the repulsive side another, so called "false" fixed points were present that were globally attractive, with the exception of the basins of attraction of the "proper" ones. This structure seemed to be advantageous because no divergences could occur in the iterations, the convergence to the "false" values could easily be detected, and by using some ancillary tricks in the most of the cases the solutions could be kicked from the wrong fixed points into the basins of attraction of the "proper ones". It was expected that via adding simple rules to the application of these transformations good adaptive control can be developed. The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders during neonatal periods are often not apparent. If not treated earlier, irreversible damages such as mental retardation or even death may occur. Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information systems later.

This paper describes a parallel, multistage optimization approach to enterprise system design and operations where a system design is linked with system operations (e.g., resource allocation) along the multistage decision making horizon. Our approach is composed of two parts: multistage formulation, and task-parallel algorithm. The formulation utilizes the quasi-separability of the multistage decision making structure, i.e., allowing relaxation by defining the linking variables for adjacent stages of decision making. The task-parallel algorithm enables optimal load balancing of the tasks and it is validated in the demonstration case where an airline plans to introduce multiple new aircraft to capture dynamically changing travel demand. Due to the complexity added onto the upcoming future stages in the optimization processes, a linearly increasing computational load is assumed as the number of stages increases. By utilizing this linearity, the proposed task- parallel algorithm demonstrates significant speedups and parallel performances.

In reduced-reference (RR) image quality assessment (IQA), the visual quality of distorted images is evaluated with only partial information extracted from original images. In this paper, by considering the information of textures and directions during image distortion, we propose a new reduced- reference IQA metric to calculate the diversifications based on contourlet transform Experimental results illustrate that even with low data rate, the presented metric has still good consistency with the subjective perception.

This paper focuses on the development of service-oriented information systems. One of the main challenges facing service-oriented computing is providing methodologies that support the specification and design of IS behavior, and allowing software engineers to move from the earlier stages of business analysis to its final step of implementation. Model Driven approaches provide with models, transformations between them and code generators to address software development. This kind of approaches provides a conceptual structure that brings together diagrams used by business managers and analysts and those used by software developers, and is capable of organizing them in such a way that the requirements specified in one diagram can be traced through more detailed derived ones. In this paper we present a Model Driven approach which deals with the alignment between high level business models (the business view) and behavioural models of the service-oriented information system (the information system view). The work presents, by means of a case study, models proposed for modeling both, the views and model transformation between them.

A tactile sensor is developed with the aim of covering a robotpsilas entire structure, while reducing wiring requirement and ensuring high-speed response. There are only 4 signal wires from the sensor. The sensor response time is nearly constant (within 1 ms) regardless of the number of detection elements, their placements or sensor areas. In this paper, the principles behind the operation of this sensor and the results of experiments using the sensor are described.

The precision of the answer is now essential for a question answering system, because of the large amount of free texts on the Internet. Attempting to achieve a high precision, we propose a question answering system supported by case grammar theory and based on VerbNet frames. It extracts the syntactic, thematic and semantic information from the question to filter out unmatched sentences in semantic level and to extract answer chunk (a phrase or a word that can answer the question) from the answer sentence. VerbNet is applied in our system to detect the verb frames in question and candidate sentences, so that the syntactic and thematic information as well as semantic information can be therefore obtained. Our question answering system works well especially for answering factoid questions. The experiments show that our approach is able to filter out semantically unmatched sentences effectively and therefore rank the correct answer (s) higher in the result list.

Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.
