Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Today, more and more Electronic Control Units have been installed in vehicle, and Controller Area Network is one of the most widely used networks to connect these ECUs, also the architecture of OSEK is increasingly employed into the design of individual ECU and the network. In this paper, we propose a new framework to design the ECU with limited-storage-space. In the framework, an infinite cycle acts as a mainframe, and the code conforming to OSEK NM is inserted into the cycle. A siren of vehicle is developed with this method, and a Hardware-In-Loop test is accomplished. The results show that the framework is available, and the real-time performance of the siren is satisfied.

Cognitive activity is related to important changes in the local blood flow level and in the oxygenation of the blood. These two effects lead to a modification of the optical properties of the cerebral cortex. With the aid of the functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique it is possible, through optical measures, to achieve information about the hemodynamic features of the brain activation. The aim of this study was to find a method to identify and to map the cerebral areas activated during a sustained attention task (Conner's continuous performance test - CPT) in a group of healthy subjects. This information will be of fundamental interest for a following study on a group of patients that will be administered the same examination. We propose a new analysis method based on the theory of generalized linear model (GLM) in order to obtain intuitive cerebral activation maps during the performing of cognitive tasks

One important aim of this seminar was to bring together researchers and practitioners from Information Visualization and related fields, as well as from application areas, for lively discussion and interaction. The seminar allowed critical reflection on actual research efforts, the state of field, evaluation challenges, and other important topics. This report summarizes the event.

In this paper, we present a robust approach of digital watermarking embedding and retrieval for digital *** new approach works in special domain and it has two major steps: (1) to extract affine co-variant regions, and (2) to embed watermarks with a novel fuzzy inference *** advantage of this proposed approach is demonstrated by a large amount of experiments, which are mainly against different attacks, such as common image processing, rotation, scaling, cropping, and several other affine transformations.

In this work we present a comparative study, testing selected methods for clustering and classification of holter electrocardiogram (ECG). More specifically we focus on the task of discriminating between normal 'N' beats and premature ventricular 'V' beats. Some of the tested methods represent the state of the art in pattern analysis, while others are novel algorithms developed by us. All the algorithms were tested on the same datasets, namely the MIT-BIH and the AHA databases. The results for all the employed methods are compared and evaluated using the measures of sensitivity and specificity.

Message Passing is a popular mechanism used to enable inter-process communication in parallel and distributed computing. Many complex scientific and engineering applications that are executed on clusters have been developed based on this communication model. Due to the huge amount of computing power being wasted in desktops, there is an increasing interest in using these computers to execute complex applications. However, most of the current middleware systems are aimed at executing only embarrassingly parallel applications, i.e. with no inter-process communication. Moreover, most existing middleware systems are based on Linux. Nevertheless, it is well-known that the desktop machines in the world are predominantly based on the Windows operating system. Hence, in this work we present the design implementation and evaluation performance of a Windows-based implementation of two message passing models, Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP), over the Alchemi Grid computing framework. © 2006 ACM.

In this paper, we study the problem of efficiently computing k-medians over high-dimensional and high speed data streams. The focus of this paper is on the issue of minimizing CPU time to handle high speed data streams on top of the requirements of high accuracy and small memory. Our work is motivated by the following observation： the existing algorithms have similar approximation behaviors in practice, even though they make noticeably different worst case theoretical guarantees. The underlying reason is that in order to achieve high approximation level with the smallest possible memory, they need rather complex techniques to maintain a sketch, along time dimension, by using some existing off-line clustering algorithms. Those clustering algorithms cannot guarantee the optimal clustering result over data segments in a data stream but accumulate errors over segments, which makes most algorithms behave the same in terms of approximation level, in practice. We propose a new grid-based approach which divides the entire data set into cells （not along time dimension）. We can achieve high approximation level based on a novel concept called （1 - ε）-dominant. We further extend the method to the data stream context, by leveraging a density-based heuristic and frequent item mining techniques over data streams. We only need to apply an existing clustering once to computing k-medians, on demand, which reduces CPU time significantly. We conducted extensive experimental studies, and show that our approaches outperform other well-known approaches.

The advent of service-oriented Grid computing has resulted in the need for Grid resources such as clusters to enforce user-specific service needs and expectations. Service Level Agreements (SLAs) define conditions which a cluster needs to fulfill for various jobs. An example of SLA requirement is the deadline by which a job has to be completed. In addition, these clusters implement job admission control so that overall service performance does not deteriorate due to accepting exceeding amount of jobs. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on accurate runtime estimates of jobs. This paper thus examines the adverse impact of inaccurate runtime estimates for deadline constrained job admission control in clusters using the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) strategy and a deadline-based proportional processor share strategy called Libra. Simulation results show that an enhancement called LibraRisk can manage the risk of inaccurate runtime estimates better than EDF and Libra by considering the risk of deadline delay. © 2006 IEEE.
