This paper deals with personal authentication by biometrics and specifically by signature verification. In biometrics most common case is to register a single data set for authentication. That is why it is frequently not possible to apply popular pattern recognition methods which require a significant amount of positive and negative training data. We propose a new recognition method that uses a subspace derived from a set of test experiments data. By applying a subspace centred on the point designated as the registered data we can authenticate signatures of registered users

Heterogeneous computing systems composed of interconnected machines with varied computational capabilities often operate in environments where there may be sudden machine failures, higher than expected load, or inaccuracies in estimation of system parameters, Makespan (defined as the completion time for an entire set of tasks) is often the performance feature that is optimized in such systems. It is important that the makespan of a resource allocation (mapping) be robust against errors in task computation time estimates. The problem of optimally mapping tasks onto machines of a heterogeneous computing environment has been shown, in general, to be NP-complete. Therefore, heuristic techniques to find near optimal solutions to this mapping problem are required. The goal of this research is to find a static mapping of tasks so that the robustness of the desired system feature, makespan, is maximized against the errors in task execution time estimates. Seven heuristics to derive near-optimal solutions and an upper bound to this problem are presented and evaluated.

Grid and peer-to-peer (P2P) network technologies enable aggregation of distributed resources for solving large-scale and computationally-intensive applications. These technologies are well-suited for bag-of-tasks (BoT) applications, because each application consists of many parallel and independent tasks. With multiple users competing for the same resources, the key challenge is to finish a user application within a specified deadline. In this paper, we propose a time optimization algorithm that schedules a user application on auction-based resource allocation systems. These allocation systems, which are based on proportional share, allow users to bid higher in order to gain more resource shares. Therefore, this algorithm adjusts a user bid periodically on these systems in order to finish the application on time.

Over the last few years, grid technologies have progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way of service provisioning based on utility computing models. Users consume these services based on their QoS (quality of service) requirements. In such "pay-per-use" grids, workflow execution cost must be considered during scheduling based on users' QoS constraints. In this paper, we propose a cost-based workflow scheduling algorithm that minimizes execution cost while meeting the deadline for delivering results. It can also adapt to the delays of service executions by rescheduling unexecuted tasks. We also attempt to optimally solve the task scheduling problem in branches with several sequential tasks by modeling the branch as a Markov decision process and using the value iteration method

For generations, the academic community has relied on peer review as a way of encouraging scholarship and enhancing the knowledge base. Peer review has been widely used in the classroom since at least the 1970s, with hundreds of papers on its use in diverse academic fields appearing in the literature (for a comprehensive survey, see [1]). Its use appears to be on the upswing, given the current interest in active learning and teamwork. In computer science, peer review seems to have very broad application. It can be used to evaluate the contributions of various members to a project team;it can be used for design documents and code reviews, in writing assignments, and in capstone project courses. The experience of the panelists is illustrative of the wide range of peer-review practices. This panel will serve to introduce the audience to some of these applications. Since many computer-science instructors have experimented with peer review, we are anxious to have them share their experiences during the open discussion period.

This paper presents the integration of haptic and visual modalities in a multimodal application for planning total hip replacement. It focuses on the creation of the surgical access since that plays a fundamental role in the success of the complete intervention and is also a perfect candidate for multimodal integration, since both the assessment of the surgical access and of the potential damage to the structures involved can benefit from combining these complementary sources of information.

This paper proposes a new Heterogeneous Multi-hop Cellular IP (MCIP) network that integrates multi-hop communication with Cellular IP. MCIP increases the coverage of the wireless network and improves the network robustness against adverse propagation phenomena by supporting communication in dead zones and areas with poor radio coverage. MCIP includes three components: location management, connection management and route reconfiguration. Location management is responsible for maintaining the location information for Mobile Stations (MSs) in a local domain. Connection management establishes an initial path for data transmission and a route reconfiguration mechanism is proposed to take advantage of various multi-hop connection alternatives available based on terminal interfaces, network accessibility and topology. Our simulation results show that MCIP performs well in networks of various sizes. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper describes an approach to enterprise application integration (EAI) using extensible Web services. The approach is demonstrated by building a real-world application for EAI in the financial services domain. Business drivers for and approaches to EAI are presented first. The manifestation of Web services in general and their role in EAI are discussed next. Financial services domain characteristics are presented. Business drivers that entail a strong need for functional extensibility in the financial services domain are described. Our proposed architecture for EAI which addresses functional extensibility is described. This architecture is based on the notion of extensible Web services. We then present our implementation of the architecture and practical challenges encountered in EAI. A brief discussion of how our work relates to the current research in service-oriented computing (SOC) and semantic Web concludes the paper.
