This paper newly proposes the four-fingered robot hand with dual turning mechanism where two and two other fingers can independently rotate inner and outer circles with the common center, respectively. Due to this mechanical configuration, it has the particular rotating axis where the manipulation around the axis can be completely decomposed into the velocity control around the axis and the internal force control in the contact plane. We achieved a manipulation task around the axis with the time of 0.8[sec] for one rotation, while it is relatively slow for another axis.

Coalescing is a data restructuring operation applicable to temporal databases. It merges timestamps of adjacent or overlapping tuples that have identical attribute values. The likelihood that a temporal query employs coalescing is very high. However, coalescing is an expensive and time consuming operation. In this paper, we present a novel temporal relational model through which coalescing becomes quite simple. The basic idea is to augment each time-varying attribute in a temporal relation with two additional attributes that trace changes in values of the corresponding time-varying attribute. One attribute traces changes in values with respect to each individual instance (i.e. tuples having the same key value), while the other attribute traces changes in values globally for all instances (i.e. all tuples in the temporal relation). Using these tracing attributes, coalescing could be easily implemented through a quite simple join-free group-by query. The coalescing query is fully processed and optimized by the underlying database management system.

This paper deals with nonholonomic control systems subject to affine constraints. We first derive several preliminary properties of nonholonomic dynamic systems with affine constraints (NDSAC). We then investigate local accessibility and local controllability of the NDSAC based on both Sussmann's theorem and linear approximation approaches. Conditions for local asymptotic stabilizability of the NDSAC by linear state feedback and nonlinear smooth state feedback are also derived. Finally, two physical examples are illustrated to confirm the results.

Resonant behavior in a finite array that appears as (modulated) impedance or current-amplitude oscillations may limit its bandwidth substantially. Therefore, simulations should predict such behavior. Recently, a new approach has been developed, called the eigencurrent approach, which can predict resonant behavior in finite arrays. Analysis of line arrays of II-plane oriented microstrip rings by the eigencurrent approach reveals that resonant behavior is caused by excitation of one of the eigencurrents. The characteristic impedance of this eigencurrent becomes small in comparison to the characteristic impedances of the other eigencurrents that can exist on the array geometry.

Under certain well–defined conditions, determining the correctness of a system under test (SUT) is based on a checking sequence generated from a finite state machine (FSM) specification of the SUT. When there is a distinguishing sequence for the FSM, an efficient checking sequence may be produced from the elements of a set Eα' of α' - sequences that verify subsets of states and the elements of a set EC of subsequences that test the individual transitions. An optimization algorithm may be used in order to produce a shortest checking sequence by connecting the elements of Eα' and EC using transitions drawn from an acyclic set. Previous work did not consider whether some transition tests may be omitted from EC. This paper investigates the problem of eliminating subsequences from EC for those transitions that correspond to the last transitions traversed when a distinguishing sequence is applied in an α'–sequence to obtain a further reduction in the length of a checking sequence. © IFIP 2005.

This paper describes a new environment for the pre-operative planning of total hip replacement. The system is based on a multimodal/multisensorial interface, which includes advanced software visualisation and evaluation modules for the planning and state-of-the-art technologies for immersive interface (stereoscopic display, different six degrees of freedom tracking technologies, speech recognition, and haptic feedbacks). This paper is focused on the final clinical application description. More specific visualisation-related modules are described in other related papers.

Web services are becoming an important enabler of the semantic Web. Besides the need for a rich description mechanism, Web service information should be made available in an accessible way for machine processing. In this paper, we propose a new P2P based approach for Web services discovery. Peers that store Web services information, such as data item descriptions, are efficiently located using a scalable and robust data indexing structure for peer-to-peer data networks, NIPPERS. We present a theoretical analysis which shows that the communication cost of the query and update operations scale double-logarithmically with the number of NIPPERS nodes. Furthermore, we show that the network is robust with respect to failures fulfilling quality of Web services requirements.

This research proposes to modernize a legacy software system by using Web services as the main building blocks of the software reengineering. For this purpose, a legacy theorem proof checking and derivation tool called Bertie3 is reengineered in terms of service-oriented architecture, service-oriented componentization, and external data representation and serialization. With the Web services of derivation checking engines and first-order markup languages, a minimal amount of development time can be spent working on well-known and well-developed components. More time can be spent updating the features that make the tool unique. This case study shows that modernizing a software system with Web services will allow the business components of the system to be easily expanded and integrated with other application components for future demands.

Temporal reference is an issue of determining how events relate to one another. Determining temporal relations relies on the combination of the information, which is explicit or implicit in a language. This paper reports a computational model for determining temporal relations in Chinese. The model takes into account the effects of linguistic features, such as tense/aspect, temporal connectives, and discourse structures, and makes use of the fact that events are represented in different temporal structures. A machine learning approach, Weighted Bayesian Classifier, is developed to map their combined effects to the corresponding relations. An empirical study is conducted to investigate different combination methods, including lexical-based, grammatical-based, and role-based methods. When used in combination, the weights of the features may not be equal. Incorporating with an optimization algorithm, the weights are fine tuned and the improvement is remarkable. © 2004 COLING 2004 - Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Computational Linguistics.
