The U. S. Naval Research Laboratories algorithm of Elovitz et. al. enables automatic transalation of English text to IPA and, via a further mapping, to input for a "phoneme" based synthesizer such as VOTRAX. A novel feature of the NRL algorithm is that the set of 300+ rules used to perform the translation is read in at run time and thus may be easily altered to expand the set of rules in general or to treat special cases such as jargon. While the orignal NRL FASBOL version ran about 4 to 5 times real time on a PDP-10, Broihier and Crowley implelemented a BASIC Plus version which translated up to 165 words per minute on a PDP-11/70. The program included here consists essentially of a FORTRAN control structure with calls to string manipulation subroutines, available as efficient library routines under the PDP-11 RT-11 operating system. The software runs in less than real time on an LSI-11 with 16K of memory. Alternatively, using the string manipulation routine definitions provided, an all-FORTRAN version may be written. Finally, the straightforward, non-recursive structure employed can implemented in other high level languages. In fact, a PL/M version has been written which, using calls to assembler routines employing block move instructions, will run real time on a Zilog Z-80.

In a previous paper, it was shown that the presence of a combinatorial shifter in the data paths of a user microprogrammable general purpose computer could be used for fast fixed-point multiplication if a unique microsubroutine was created for each required multiplier. A sixth-order direct form IIR digital filter was implemented via this technique. This work has been extended, so as to produce a tenth-order LPC k-parameter lattice synthesizer software system which executes in about 60% real time. The remaining CPU time may be allocated for k-parameter manipulation, as in synthesis-by-rule aAgorithms, or for unrelated computation. The approach used is novel since it involves dynamic analysis of k-parameters and creation of the microsubroutines required for synthesis during each pitch period. The results suggest that a high speed shifter embedded in an otherwise conventional micromachine architecture is Useful for practical, real-time digital signal processing applications.

Test and Evaluation have become paramount in today's department of Defense acquisition process. Therefore, the U. S. Navy requires both private and public facilities to accomplish the final goals of the “Fly before Buy” concept. Such a facility exists at the Naval Coastal systems Laboratory (NCSL); an integral part of the Chief of Naval Material's, Director of Navy Laboratories organization. This paper briefly addresses the Laboratory, its mission, and its history. This is followed by an in—depth facilities overview in order to create an understanding of the slow but steady evolution of NCSL's unique fixed facilities. These facilities, when coupled to the local natural environment, provide a unique in situ test and evaluation capability which is unequalled in the United States for assessing seagoing coastal systems. Of prime consideration is the Range Date Acquisition Center (RADAC) and Its ancillary subsystems for tracking, environmental monitoring, communications, and post run analysis. The paper is concluded with a discussion of both past and present use of the aforementioned facilities with an emphasis on user acceptance and future potential growth.

It has previously been shown that automatically generated digital signal processings software can incorporate precomputed, data independent, program control and data access parameters. Such software is "time-efficient"; that is, at run time, only data dependent computation occurs. In this paper, alternative program structures, all of which accommondate the autogen feature, are examined for time/ space (memory) efficiency considerations on both conventional machines and those having cache memories. A novel structure derived from threaded code -- knotted code -- is proposed and shown to incorporate an excellent time/space tradeoff.
