The information revolution has caused many aspects of human activity to critically depend on a wide variety of physically existing or virtual technological achievements such as electronic devices, computer systems, algorithms, cloud resources, artificial intelligence hardware and software entities etc. Many of these systems are used in highly sensitive contexts, such as military applications. This implies the existence of an increasing number of unintentional disturbances or malicious attacks. Successful operation requires qualities such as robustness, fault tolerance, reliability, availability and security. All these may be summarized by the title of survivability. Survivability of critical systems working for sensitive applications involves the ability to provide uninterrupted operation under severe disturbances, gracefully degrade when limiting conditions are reached and maintain the ability to resume normal service once the disturbances have been removed. Survivability is an important, even - though non – functional, lifecycle property of many engineering systems. Further desirable elements of survivability include the ability of systems to recognize and resist attacks or accidents, adapt in order to avoid them and modify their behavior in order to diminish the effects of similar future occurrences. This chapter presents a quantitative approach to assessing survivability and an account of survivability in military systems. A scheme for survivability via replica diversity in the implementation of the AES algorithm is then presented. Following that, an algorithm for adaptive attack aversion in user authentication systems is presented that is based on Boolean transformations. An approach for increased survivability in Internet of Things (IoT) systems is then presented. Finally, an algorithm for secure data storage in cloud resources is presented that allows attack detection and avoidance. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

This paper describes the research and development of the digital stereo encoder FM transmitter including its implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The development of structural schemes of the digital part of the FM transmitter exciter, the stereo encoder and the digital synthesizer of the sine wave on the FPGA is also described. Paper includes a description of development of a digital synthesizer of a sinusoidal signal on a FPGA, which uses a tabular method to generate the sinusoidal wave, fourth part of its period is written to memory and the rest of the period is calculated using the first part. To generate five sinusoids of different frequencies in a stereo encoder, only one table in memory used. The simulation of the stereocoder on the FPGA in carried out in the specialized Computer-Aided Design (CAD). The graphs of the left and right balance signals, the sum and difference of these signals, the signal of difference of the two sine waves which have their amplitude modulated and with a carrier signal of 19 kHz and the complex stereo signal are constructed. After receiving a complex stereo signal its frequency modulation is carried out with a carrier signal of 100 MHz, the FPGA chip outputs the frequency code of modulated signal. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted extensive interest from both academia and industries, and is recognized as an ultimate infrastructure to connect everything at anytime and anywhere. The implementation of IoT generally faces the challenges from energy constraint and implementation cost. In this paper, we will introduce a new green communication paradigm, the ambient backscatter (AmBC), that could utilize the environmental wireless signals for both powering a tiny-cost device and backscattering the information symbols. Specifically, we will present the basic principles of AmBC, analyze its features and advantages, suggest its open problems, and predict its potential applications for our future IoT.

For controlling complex systems ultimately, recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in the controllability of complex networks. controllability, a system's basic attribute, represents whether we could control the system from any initial to any final states with appropriate external inputs within a finite time. However, in order to implement control in realistic systems,it is far from enough by solely detecting the so-called controllability. In other words, the minimum energy cost, with which to actuate the evolution of system states, must be systematically investigated to accomplish the control of various complex *** we show the results on the scaling behavior of control energy for controlling complex networks. Specifically, we focus on the upper bound of the minimum control energy over all possible control directions within a certain control distance between the initial and final states. Numerical validations on all of our theoretical results are also provided. Our results pave the way to implement realistic control over various complex networks with the minimum energy cost.

The article analyzes the actual topic – a tool for reducing of uncertainty in strategic management decisions in the "digital economy". The tasks solved in the article are to concretize the concept of "digital economy" and substantiate the digitalization of economic information as a tool for more effective management of the economy. Methods for organization of management and reduction of uncertainty about the object of management by digitization of additional information are used. The novelty of the article is the proposal of a methodological tool that provides the reducing of an uncertainty when choosing a most rational management decision through the digitization of information. The basic concepts related to the economy, "digital economy" and information in the framework of statistical theory, are analyzed in the article. The definition of "digital economy" and recommendations on the organization of information management through, inter alia, its digitalization as a determining factor to reduce uncertainty when choosing a more rational management decision, are proposed. The relevance of the introduction of human-machine interaction technologies for the collection and analysis of information, which is needed for making strategic decisions in the conditions of digital transformation of enterprises, is shown. Concluded that it is possible to increase the probability of implementing of a decision that meets the criteria of optimal choice by using of information on a certain program for reducing of uncertainty and achieving the goal of the strategic management. © 2019 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Synthetic biologists have made great progress over the past decade in developing methods for modular assembly of genetic sequences and in engineering biological systems with a wide variety of functions in various contexts and organisms. However, current paradigms in the field entangle sequence and functionality in a manner that makes abstraction difficult, reduces engineering flexibility, and impairs predictability and design reuse. Functional Synthetic Biology aims to overcome these impediments by focusing the design of biological systems on function, rather than on sequence. This reorientation will decouple the engineering of biological devices from the specifics of how those devices are put to use, requiring both conceptual and organizational change, as well as supporting software tooling. Realizing this vision of Functional Synthetic Biology will allow more flexibility in how devices are used, more opportunity for reuse of devices and data, improvements in predictability, and reductions in technical risk and cost. © 2022, CC BY.

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are freely accessible materials for teaching, learning, and research that have been made available such that they can be freely used, modified, and shared. Prompted by the potential positive impact that OERs can have, a growing community of OER enthusiasts has been advocating for their adoption in higher education, and elsewhere. The growing demand for computer science education and training (especially in areas related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data) has led to speculation as to how OERs may be best leveraged to support such teaching and learning. The recent occasion of an international OER workshop at the 2019 IEEE Conference on Computers, Software and Applications (COMPSAC) allowed for six OER enthusiasts, all with extensive OER experience, to reflect on the status of OER adoption and understanding. These reflections, addressing misconceptions and challenges, form the basis for this paper. © 2019 IEEE.
