This paper considers the problem of signal detection in non-Gaussian noise. We propose the novel moment quality criterion decision making, where the moment's description of a random process is used for synthesis of polynomial decision rules. It is shown that the nonlinear processing of samples and taking into account higher order statistics of random process can increase the efficiency of signal detection. It is shown that the proposed models and methods allow us to increase the efficiency of signal processing in comparison with the known results. © 2018 IEEE.

Energy cost for controlling complex networks with linear dynamics

Examining the controllability of complex networks has received much attention recently. The focus of many studies is commonly trained on whether we can steer a system from an arbitrary initial state to any final state within finite time with admissible external inputs. In order to accomplish the control at the minimum cost, we must study how much control energy is needed to reach the desired state. At a given control distance between the initial and final states, existing results have offered the scaling behavior of lower bounds of the minimum energy in terms of the control time. However, to reach an arbitrary final state at a given control distance, the minimum energy is actually dominated by the upper bound, whose analytic expression still remains elusive. Here we theoretically show the scaling behavior of a precise upper bound of the minimum energy in terms of the time required to achieve control. Apart from validating the analytical results with numerical simulations, our findings are applicable to any number of nodes that receive inputs directly and any types of networks with linear dynamics. Moreover, more precise analytical results for the lower bound of the minimum energy are derived with the proposed method. Our results pave the way for implementing realistic control over various complex networks with the minimum control cost.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The article describes the results of studying and analyzing phonocardiograms (PCGs) obtained during a physiological experiment with Blu-ray standard equipment. It provides the findings of a spectral and spectral-time analysis for signals with a sampling frequency of 10, 44.1 and 192 kHz. It shows that the differences in the PCG spectra of identical signals are unreliable. The article specifies the onset and disappearance moments of the harmonic components of heart sounds. It also provides recommendations on the sampling frequency and bit resolution of digitized PCG signals for telemetric systems.

First steps towards full model based motion planning and control of quadrupeds: A hybrid zero dynamics approach

The hybrid zero dynamics (HZD) approach has become a powerful tool for the gait planning and control of bipedal robots. This paper aims to extend the HZD methods to address walking, ambling and trotting behaviors on a quadrupedal robot. We present a framework that systematically generates a wide range of optimal trajectories and then provably stabilizes them for the full-order, nonlinear and hybrid dynamical models of quadrupedal locomotion. The gait planning is addressed through a scalable nonlinear programming using direct collocation and HZD. The controller synthesis for the exponential stability is then achieved through the Poincaré sections analysis. In particular, we employ an iterative optimization algorithm involving linear and bilinear matrix inequalities (LMIs and BMIs) to design HZD-based controllers that guarantee the exponential stability of the fixed points for the Poincaré return map. The power of the framework is demonstrated through gait generation and HZDbased controller synthesis for an advanced quadruped robot, - Vision 60, with 36 state variables and 12 control inputs. A rapid fault reconstruction strategy using a bank of sliding mode observers

This paper deals with the design of a model-based rapid fault detection and isolation strategy using sliding mode observers. To address this problem, a new scheme is proposed by adaptively combining the information provided by a bank of observers. In this regard, a new structure for sliding mode observers is considered. Then, the well-known recursive least square algorithm is utilized to merge individual state estimations suitably such that the system fault is detected faster. The required condition for enhancing perfect state estimation is derived, and the stability of the overall system is proven via Lyapunov's direct method. The supremacy of proposed scheme is fully discussed through mathematical analyses as well as simulations. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Social optima in robust mean field LQG control: From finite to infinite horizon

This paper studies social optimal control of mean field LQG (linear-quadratic-Gaussian) models with uncertainty. Specially, the uncertainty is represented by a uncertain drift which is common for all agents. A robust optimization approach is applied by assuming all agents treat the uncertain drift as an adversarial player. In our model, both dynamics and costs of agents are coupled by mean field terms, and both finite- and infinite-time horizon cases are considered. By examining social functional variation and exploiting person-by-person optimality principle, we construct an auxiliary control problem for the generic agent via a class of forward-backward stochastic differential equation system. By solving the auxiliary problem and constructing consistent mean field approximation, a set of decentralized control strategies is designed and shown to be asymptotically optimal. Intelligent decision-making (IDM) is a cornerstone of artificial intelligence (AI) designed to automate or augment decision processes. Modern IDM paradigms integrate advanced frameworks to enable intelligent agents to make effective and adaptive choices and decompose complex tasks into manageable steps, such as AI agents and high-level reinforcement learning. Recent advances in multimodal foundation-based approaches unify diverse input modalities—such as vision, language, and sensory data—into a cohesive decision-making process. Foundation models (FMs) have become pivotal in science and industry, transforming decision-making and research capabilities. Their large-scale, multimodal data-processing abilities foster adaptability and interdisciplinary breakthroughs across fields such as healthcare, life sciences, and education. Mobile offloading is a platform that facilitates the distribution of computationally intensive tasks from mobile devices to the cloud or other devices in order to conserve energy and improve performance. The concept is practically based on the idea of exchanging relatively low communication energy for high computation power utilization. Efforts have been channeled towards energy conservation by clusters using Dynamic Power Management (DPM).
