Differential evolution (DE) is a simple but powerful evolutionary algorithm, which has been widely and successfully used in many areas. In this paper, an impulsive control method is introduced to the DE framework, and the impulsive DE (IpDE) is proposed for improving the performance of DE. The impulsive control operation instantly moves the individuals which do not update for continuous pre-defined generations to a desired state based on the individuals with better fitness values in the current population. This way, IpDE controls individuals' positions in the space domain according to the stagnation status of the population. In order to validate the effectiveness of IpDE, the presented framework is applied to the original DE algorithms, as well as several state-of-the-art DE variants. Experimental results exhibit that IpDE is a simple but effective framework to improve the performance of the studied DE algorithms.

Stability margins of the switch-mode DC/DC power conversion systems are very sensitive to variations in load and system parameters. In aerospace applications these systems can be exposed to considerable variations in temperature that can cause large changes in system parameters from their nominal values and can lead to stability problems if this issue is not properly taken into account during the design phase. In this study robust stability margins are calculated for a system that consists of a DC/DC closed loop buck converter and an input LC filter considering extreme variations in temperature. For the prototype system, the paper details a modelling approach to developing an uncertain system model which is used to assess robust stability based on the principle of Structural Singular Value. The approach is verified through simulations in MATLAB and through experimental tests.

Detailed information on the deposition technology of the low-resistive ITO-films in oxygen-containing media by magnetron reactive sputtering from the In(90%)/Sn(10%) target on the cold substrate is given. Developed technology allows deposition ITO-films with sheet resistance 2-3 Ω/, transparency higher than 90%. Developed technology is notable for high reproducibility of results and is compatible with production technology of semiconductor devices of optoelectronics.

Human flesh search(HFS), a Web-enabled crowdsourcing phenomenon, originated in China a decade ago. In this article, we present the first comprehensive empirical analysis of HFS, focusing on the scope of HFS activities, the patterns of HFS crowd collaboration process, and the characteristics of HFS participant networks. A survey of HFS participants was conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the HFS community and various factors that motivate these participants to contribute. This article also advocates a new stream of Web science and social computing research that will be important in predicting the future growth and use of the World Wide Web.

In steel industry, production planning of continuous casting and hot rolling are connected closely with each other. In addition, they are constrained by many key factors such as due date, process routes, and production capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the production planning problems for continuous casting and hot rolling in an integrated way. In this research, we model the integrated production planning problem for continuous casting and hot rolling by mixed integer programming with the objective of minimizing the setup time and maximizing the utilization of devices, based on which a heuristic algorithm is developed to solve the problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm based on the data acquired from a steel plant in Jiangsu Province, China, and the results show that the proposed algorithm works quite well in integrated production planning of continuous casting and hot rolling.

In this paper, the problem of characterizing adaptive output feedback control laws for a general class of unknown MIMO linear systems is considered. Specifically, the presented control approach relies on three components, a predictor, a reference model, and a controller. The predictor is designed to predict the system's output with arbitrary accuracy, for any admissible control input. Subsequently, a full state feedback control law is designed to control the predictor output to approach the reference system, while the reference system tracks the desired trajectory. Ultimately, the control objective of driving the actual system output to track the desired trajectories is achieved by showing that the system output, the predictor output, and the reference system trajectories all converge to each other. © 2014 by ASME.

In this work, a methodology based on a new and extended use of tolerance charting, that allows incorporation of in-line inspection operations to improve the machining process plan, is presented. The methodology is applied to every process plan setup, from the last to the initial one, and is based on a unified approach for the different active part features (machining features, inspection features and setup datum features) in the setup. A direct transfer of the inter-setup specifications to working and offset specifications tolerances is proposed. In this way, the variability sources originated by setting and tool deviations can be separately considered. This circumstance allows a more accurate calculation of operation capability indexes and eases the analysis and improvement of critical operations, reducing the manufacturing and quality loss costs. To prove methodology potential, an application on a part process planning on a CNC machine with on-machine measurement capability is illustrated. © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
