The paper presents a method for the estimation of the structure of a nonuniform subscriber loop in terms of the lengths of its composing sections. The method relies on the assumption that the sections are sufficiently long in order to cast the estimation problem in the form of a simple linear least-squares problem. The performances of the method are evaluated in simulation in the case of a subscriber loop composed of four uniform sections of different gauge kinds. ©2010 IEEE.

Paper deals with application of online rotor broken bar fault detection via artificial neural networks. Fault can be detected by monitoring abnormalities of the spectrum amplitudes at certain frequencies in the motor current spectrum. These discriminative features are used for training of feed-forward backpropagation artificial neural network. Trained network is capable to successfully classify induction motor rotor condition. Results are presented in tables and figures. © 2010 IEEE.

The task of reducing the energy loss is especially important for alternative electricity generation systems from renewable sources. In electromechanical systems with variable angular speed of permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the harmonic components of generator voltages and currents in transient and steady state have impact on energy efficiency. This paper compares the energy performance of basic schemes of taking of power from PMSG in a wind generation system. It investigates the nature of harmonic distortions of voltages and currents at the generator load on the diode bridge and assesses their impact on energy efficiency in steady-state under different wind speeds and, consequently, power. The PMSG load on active rectifier is characterized by minimal losses, but harmonic distortions appear there in transient conditions, which dominate in the alternative power plants. The paper suggests compensating of loss from transitional harmonics by the way of regulation of the generator's excitation. Simulations results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

Multiactuator panels for wave field synthesis: Evolution and present developments

A technical review is presented of the development of a special type of planar loudspeaker array for wave field synthesis, known as multiactuator panel. It consists of a thin, stiff panel with a small back volume, which vibrates by means of a group of mechanical exciters, each driven by a different signal. Multiactuator panels are used as alternatives to arrays of classic loudspeakers with conically shaped diaphragms for wave field synthesis, with added benefits such as low visual profile and diffuse radiation. However, the use of multiactuator panel arrays poses some problems and technical challenges that have been described in the literature. A historical review of the evolution from single-to multi-excited panels is given, followed by a technical discussion of the current developments in the field of wave field synthesis reproduction by means of multiactuator panels.

Phasor based Wide Area Monitoring and control (WAMC) systems are becoming a reality with increased research, development and deployments. Many potential control applications based on these systems are being proposed and researched. Such applications are either local applications using data from one or a few Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) or centralized utilizing data from several PMUs. An aspect of these systems, which is less well researched, is the WAMC system dependence on high performance communication. This paper presents results of research on the use of Internet Protocol (IP) networks for both PMU and Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)/Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) data for monitoring purposes. The paper examines performance aspects of the IP network Infrastructures when utilized by both: continuous PMU data streams and critical IED/RTU data. A set of simulation models characterizing a network of a Nordic Transmission System Operator were built to perform the analysis. The paper considers Quality of Service (QoS) strategies and the resulting delays and data loss that would be experienced.

The present paper proposes simple and effective ways to improve recent results on the estimation of the region of attraction of continuous-time Takagi-Sugeno (TS) models. These estimates are obtained via a novel non-quadratic local stability approach that overcomes infeasible global quadratic conditions. In order to ameliorate these solutions two techniques are proposed to successively obtain better estimations of the stability domain: if a nonlinear model is available, an algorithm alternating closer modeling areas and bigger estimates comes in handy; if not, an algorithm alternating closer polytopes and bigger estimates proves useful. Conditions are expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and progressively better estimates of the region of attraction are obtained via linear programming techniques. Some examples are included to illustrate the improvements.

Achieving fault tolerance in process control usually involves supervision and reconfiguration. On the other hand, common robust control approaches achieve a common performance level for a family of plants, which can be unsatisfactory in the nominal case if faulty conditions are not taken into account. This paper discusses the problem of guaranteeing both a nominal performance and a degraded second-class control performance under actuators' permanent faults, by using a time invariant controller. LMI, BMI and other possible solutions are investigated in a multivariable state feedback control framework. Two examples from the literature (reactor and jet bank angle control) illustrate the procedure. © 2009 IFAC.

This paper deals with the iterative learning control (ILC) problem for uncertain time-delay systems (TDS). In order to ensure monotonic convergence of the ILC process, a sufficient condition is developed using an H ∞ -based framework. It shows that under this framework, the convergence condition is enabled to be delay-dependent and have a formulation in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, formulas for the updating law design can be derived by directly solving LMIs. A numerical example is provided to verify that the delay-dependent condition in LMI forms is effective in producing monotonically convergent ILC algorithms.

This paper is devoted to the problem of state estimation for a class of dynamic system with multiple nonlinear-linear (NL) mixing state constraints. A computational algorithm was developed by C. Yang and E. Blasch to incorporate a positive definite quadratic form equality constraint into the Kalman filtering for the ground vehicle tracking. However, when the target tracked in multidimensional space, a single positive definite quadratic form constraint is not enough due to the involvement of other surface such as hyperboloid, paraboloid, or even plane. A analytic method of incorporating multiple nonlinear-linear mixing state constraints into the Kalman filter is presented here, and a sufficient condition is obtained that guarantee the existence of solution. The constraints may be time varying. At each time step the unconstrained Kalman filter solution is projected onto the state constraints surface. This significantly improves the prediction accuracy of the filter. The use of this algorithm is demonstrated on a nonlinear-linear mixing spacecraft positioning problem.
