Ad hoc networking is regarded as an adequate solution to cooperative driving between communicating cars on the road. Deploying and testing these networks, usually known as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), involves a high cost in the real world, and so simulation is an useful alternative in research. One of the most critical issues in a simulation study of VANETs is the use of a mobility model which resembles, as closely as possible, the real behavior of vehicular traffic. Mobility models are crucial to obtain accurate and meaningful simulation results. In this paper we present CityMob, a mobility pattern generator for VANETs. Citymob allows researchers to easily create urban mobility scenarios, including the possibility to model car accidents. We designed and developed it targeting compatibility with the ns- 2 simulator, and we implemented three different mobility models: Simple Model (SM), Manhattan Model (MM) and Downtown Model (DM). Based on a flooding alert protocol we show that the most realistic mobility model to simulate traffic accidents is the Downtown model. We also find that, for flooding to be effective, a moderate number of vehicles is required.

Existing information systems often lack support to crisis and emergency situations. In such scenarios, the involved actors often engage in ad hoc collaborations necessary to understand and respond to the emerging events. We propose a collaboration model and a prototype aiming to improve the consistency and effectiveness of emergent work activities. Our approach defends the requirement to construct shared situation awareness (SA). To support SA, we developed a collaborative artifact named situation matrixes (SM), which relates different situation dimensions (SD) of the crisis/emergency scenario. A method was also developed to construct and evaluate concrete SM and SD. This method was applied in two organizations' IT service desk teams, which often have to deal with emergency situations. The target organizations found our approach very relevant in organizing their response to emergencies.

Computer simulations are a common procedure for assessing the performance of new algorithms. To conduct a valid and accurate study, the models employed in such simulators need to be carefully selected. Regarding shadowing modeling, one-dimensional models are fairly commonplace in the literature. While simple and with low computational costs, these models can not produce correlated fading values for mobiles that are in nearby positions and, besides, do not include the cross-correlation effect. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a bi-dimensional shadowing model which introduces both the spatial correlation and the cross-correlation present in real systems. Finally, the impact of considering different aspects of shadowing modeling for system level investigations is evaluated. For that purpose, the UMTS radio access technology has been considered as a case study.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the benefits that can be achieved by operating the connection inverters of the distributed energy resources as active power filters in LV distribution networks. The use of photovoltaic inverters to compensate zero sequence currents, arising from unbalances among phases, can improve the efficiency of the distributed system by means of reducing the total amount of losses. For that purpose, a typical load in parallel with a distribution network where a photovoltaic inverter is connected has been simulated. The reductions in the distribution power losses and compensation of zero sequence currents have been demonstrated.

When organizations face unforeseen emergency situations its members often resort to unstructured crisis management activities in order to overcome the problems. Researchers have noted that a common activity in these scenarios is the construction of a shared awareness of the situation in order to collaboratively identify the actions required to be carried on and the most suitable people to do them. In this paper we present a collaborative application based on Tablet-PCs to assist these unstructured activities aiming to improve their consistency and effectiveness. Inspired on the Reasons Swiss-Cheese model for accidents, the proposed approach relies on the development of a shared situation awareness, constructed from a set of collaboratively constructed situation matrixes which expose involved users contributions to the overall solution strategy. Three application scenarios are used as example.

In this work the hardware-software measuring system for registration of acoustic emission (AE) signals based on personal computer (PC) for detection regions of deformation and fracture localization and their location as well as estimation of current mechanical state of loaded materials was designed. Series of experiments on measurement of basic characteristics of AE signals of the D16AT samples with a notch have been carried out under uniaxial tension. The obtained experimental dependences are agreed well with a literature data and interpreted from a position of a stage pattern of the deformation processes occurring under loading.

The paper investigates several pole placement methods in the linear case and suggests a new pole placement method by means of fuzzy linear equations. The linear methods concern the constant real part poles, the poles places on a circle, Butterworth configurations without and with the correction of the imaginary part, the pole-zero cancellation, and the poles placed on an ellipse. Low order systems are considered. The pole placement methods are compared by the digital simulation of control systemspsila behaviors with respect to the modification of the reference input. The conclusions are useful for continuous control systems, and they can be extended easily to digital control systems including quasi-continuous ones.

The aim of the research is developing physical-mechanical and information basis for designing protective and functional polymeric materials and coatings based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) with ultrafine and nano-powders and fibers. The method suggested is bases on combination of structural (multi-scale) analysis of materials by advanced methods of computer mechanics and design of numerical experiments as well. It allows establishing a relationship between macro-characteristics of material and control parameters. For the latter the parameters of material structure and manufacturing technology were taken. Within the state space a surface is constructed which characterize the links. A level line on the surface is responsible for a certain level of the macro-characteristics. When an interval of values of the macro-characteristic is appointed it is associated with a region of corresponding values of the control parameters. Reliability of manufactured composite products is evaluated by allowable deviation of control parameters from nominal values that is governed by shape and size of the area of allowable values of the control parameters. The advantage of the method suggested is determined by explicit account of structural state and multilevel character of heterogeneous material behavior under external loading of different nature.

This work presents the tuning of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) via the Bounded Data Uncertainties (BDU) method in order to improve the system robustness. The BDU method considers models with bounded uncertainties and it is stated as a Min-Max problem where a solution which performs 'best' in the worst-possible scenario is sought. So a new guided way of tuning the LQR is offered, which takes into account the uncertainties bounds, and it results in the modification of the recursive Riccati equation. The application to multidimensional systems is not trivial due to the fact that the problem presents the form of a Two-Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP) and it is solved iteratively. © 2007 EUCA.

In today's CPU Voltage Regulator (VR) industry, coupled inductor VRs have begun to replace the non-coupled VRs for their better performances. However, today's coupled inductor implementations have long winding paths, which is not preferred in the high current CPU VR application. In this paper, several short winding path coupled inductor structures for 2 and more phase coupled inductors are proposed. Their precise reluctance models are illustrated and their design guidelines based on their precise reluctance models are also shown. The experimental results verify the proposed structures, their models and their design procedures.
