This paper characterizes the integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) device under the zero-current-transition (ZCT) soft switching condition for the first time. The test results show that ZCT soft switching can dramatically reduce the turn-off loss, turn-on loss of the IGCT switch and also alleviate the reverse recovery stress of the diode. The ZCT circuit is therefore suitable for increasing the current handling capabilities of IGCT devices.

Single phase switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have a special place in the emerging high-volume, low-cost and low-performance applications in appliances and also in high-speed low-power motor drives in various industrial applications. Single phase SRMs have a number of drawbacks: low power density as they have only 50% utilization of windings, lack of self-starting feature unless otherwise built in to the machine, most of the time with permanent magnets or sometimes with distinct and special machine rotor configurations or additional mechanisms. Many of these approaches are expensive or make the manufacturing process more difficult. In order to overcome such disadvantages, a method involving interpoles and windings is proposed in this paper. The proposed structure also provides four-quadrant operational capability with an appropriate converter. In addition to the proposed single phase SRM topology, a new and novel converter topology requiring only a single switch and a single diode is proposed. This enables for the first time a compact and low-cost single phase SRM. The present configuration, in addition, enables rotor position sensorless operation of the proposed single SRM drive system. Experimental results of the proposed SRM drive system are included.

The emitter turn-off thyristor (ETO) is a new MOS-controlled thyristor that is suitable for use in high-power converters due to its improved switching performance and easy control. This paper analyzes the abnormal failures related to the parasitic diode of the ETO in high-frequency converters for the first time. To prevent this failure, several solutions are proposed and improved ETOs are developed. Experimental results show that the proposed solutions can properly solve this problem.

The fast switching speed, snubberless turn-off capability and voltage controlled turn-off property enable the emitter turn-off (ETO) thyristor the capability of high switching frequency-about 5-10 times as high as its GTO counterpart. A one-megawatt ETO-based voltage source inverter system is constructed with a switching frequency up to 3-5 kHz. Experimental results have shown that the ETO is a promising device for use in high frequency systems.

The main goal of a sensing device is to provide reliable, precise, up-to-date and concise information about a process variable, parameter or index, to be used for different monitoring or control purposes. Other than using the basic transducer device, it is also possible to convert a variable into another one which is easier to handle. Modern computer-based systems allow for more versatile sensors providing such information without the need for extra hardware. The use of AI techniques also allows for some form of intelligence in performing this task. Nevertheless, the use of model based sensors introduces unavoidable performance penalties. Also, various constraints apply to their design. In this paper, sensing goals and activities are reviewed, as well as different approaches to achieve them. A basic analysis of their properties for real-time operation and their limitations is presented and some applications are discussed.

The paper is focused on the computation of a dual-rate high-order-hold discrete equivalent controller. We assume that the continuous-time controller has been already designed in order to meet continuous time-domain and frequency-domain specifications. Dual rate controllers are N-periodic time varying systems, and the lifting technique is utilized to express them as time invariant systems. Several different models are presented (dual-rate transfer function, dual-rate vector transfer function, dual-rate sampled-data continuous-time transfer function, discrete-time periodic algorithms) for suitable for analysis, design and/or implementation. Relations among them are presented and illustrated for the particular case of the first-order-hold circuit.

Fibrous filter, being simple in structure and low cost in material, is widely used in fine particulate removal. The collection efficiency of a fibrous filter is heavily dependent on the collection efficiency of a single fiber. Despite the availability of a reasonable formulation for single fiber collection by diffusion, most expressions of collection efficiencies by interception and impaction are empirically based and few simple analytical formulations are available, especially for impaction-dominated collection. In this paper, impaction-dominated fibrous filtration with rectangular fibers for particulate size much smaller than that of the collecting fibers are both numerically and analytically investigated. The effects of fiber aspect ratio, filter packing density, particulate size and Stokes number on the collection efficiency of a rectangular fiber in the impaction-dominated filtration are numerically determined. In addition, simple analytical expressions of single fiber collection efficiencies due to interception and inertial impaction of fine powders are derived based on Kuwabara flow analysis around a cylinder. Hence, using the equivalent hydraulic diameter concept for rectangular fibers with moderate fiber aspect ratios, the effect of particulate polydispersion on the filter collection efficiency is investigated based on presumed mass-based Gaussian size distribution and log-normal size distribution, respectively. Differences between overall size-averaged collection efficiency and mean size collection efficiency can, thus, be estimated.

The backstepping nonlinear control design scheme has been used for many years. The paper presents the use of backstepping nonlinear control design to asymptotically track the position of a magnetic ball-levitated ball. The model of the magnetic ball used is nonlinear. The design uses the backstepping nonlinear control to make the ball able to track an output signal x, a vertical position from some reference point, to a continuous twice-differentiable positive reference signal x/sub r/, asymptotically. This design suggests the use of 2 inputs u/sub 1/ and u/sub 2/ working mutually exclusively together to generate a piecewise continuous control law u.

Two robust adaptive control schemes (state-feedback and output-feedback) for formationkeeping of a pair of satellites are proposed. In contrast to most existing results, both control schemes are based on the nonlinear model directly, not on the simplified linearized model. In addition, the uncertainties and disturbances in the system such as the effects due to solar pressure, noncentral gravitational field, air drag, etc. are all considered. The objective of the control design is to force the relative position between two satellites to track a given reference signal while maintaining the desired Keplerian trajectory (in this case circular) for the master satellite. The results of this paper may be easily generalized to formationkeeping of a number of satellites.

The knowledge of failure type and their location is an indispensable requirement for the establishment of tasks of adequate recovery strategies and maintenance of both factory automation and process control systems. The failure diagnosis methodology presented in the paper is based on discrete event systems models and on the diagnosers concept, those which permit the analysis off-line and online of diagnosability of failures that can occur in the processes. We present an approach for models and associated diagnosers based on a modular decomposition of the global system, with the purpose of avoiding the problems of the exponential explosion of the number of states and of the computational complexity of the diagnosis process.
