Hydroxyapatite (HA) is one of the potential biomaterials used for treating dental defects. It can be incorporated with fluoride to enhance its anti-caries properties, though other properties could be dependent on processing technique. Hence, this study aims to characterize the influence of sintering on the properties of fluoride-added HA derived from eggshells. FTIR and XRD techniques are used to characterize the chemical and crystal structures of the samples, whilst dissolution test is carried out to characterize material degradation in the acidic environment. The results show that sintering increased the crystallinity in both HA and fluoride-add HA (F-HA) samples, which corresponds with the enhanced stability during the dissolution test. Moreover, it is also found that the addition of fluoride could further stabilize the material structure, though the impurities found in all the samples still need to be minimized. These findings suggest that sintering and fluoride addition could potentially enhance anti-caries properties of eggshell-derived HA, which could be beneficial for dental application in future subject to further process optimization and analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

Fully harnessing the ocean wave’s renewable energy resources could benefit coastal ***,ocean wave energy harvesting systems encounter several challenges,i.e.,marine uncertainties,long-distance mainte-nance,power fluctuations,irregular wave currents,non-linear generator dynamics,turbine limitations,cost optimization,and power smoothing *** overcome these challenges,this paper proposes a new multi-stage con-trol design approach for performance evaluation of the os-cillating water column(OWC)-based ocean wave energy conversion(OWEC)*** first stage optimizes the Wells turbine by implementing an efficient airflow control *** achieves maximum power-harvesting ability by eliminating stalling *** the second stage,we investigate the robustness of the permanent magnet syn-chronous generator-based OWEC system by designing adaptive back-stepping controllers,taking into account the Lyapunov stability *** accomplishes precise speed regulation for optimal power extraction while delivering reduced delay response and percentage *** ensure the OWEC system’s availability,the third stage incorporates fault-ride-through *** executes a fault reconfig-urable control for a parallel converter configuration,elimi-nating only the faulty leg instead of the entire power *** the fourth stage,a supercapacitors-based energy management system achieves power smoothing,even when the OWC plant output power *** accomplish this by implementing a model predictive control ***,the Matlab/Simulink results verify that the presented mul-ti-stage control for the OWC OWEC system is an effective design approach,offering an optimal,robust,reliable,and power-smoothing solution.

The current usage of lithium-ion batteries in many applications will cause environmental problems owing to the large number of batteries consumed. The composite sinusoidal waveform charging method can revive the capacity of aged batteries. However, the composite waveform parameters for charging each lithium-ion battery type can be different. In this study, a criterion for parameter adjustment is proposed. According to this criterion, aged batteries can recover their capacity and be reused. © 2022, Chinese Mechanical engineering Society. The present paper aims at validating a Model Predictive Control(MPC),based on the Mixed Logical Dynamical(MLD)model,for Hybrid Dynamic systems(HDSs)that explicitly involve continuous dynamics and discrete *** proposed benchmark system is a three-tank process,which is a typical case study of *** MLD-MPC controller is applied to the level control of the considered tank *** study is initially focused on the MLD approach that allows consideration of the interacting continuous dynamics with discrete events and includes the operating *** feature of MLD modeling is very advantageous when an MPC controller synthesis for the HDSs is *** the MLD model of the system is well-posed,then the MPC law synthesis can be developed based on the Mixed Integer programming(MIP)optimization *** solving this MIP problem,a Branch and Bound(B&B)algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal control ***,a comparative study is carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid controller for the HDSs compared to the standard MPC *** results show that the MLD-MPC approach outperforms the standardMPCone that doesn’t consider the hybrid aspect of the *** paper also shows a behavioral test of the MLDMPC controller against disturbances deemed as liquid leaks from the *** results are very satisfactory and show that the tracking error is minimal less than 0.1%in nominal conditions and less than 0.6%in the presence of *** results confirm the success of the MLD-MPC approach for the control of the HDSs.

This research was to study the effect of the environment condition during image captured including temperature and relative humidity in the packaging house of the mango exporting factory and in the orchard on the emissivity of mango fruit. The result showed that in the controlled environment of the packaging house in factory, the emissivity was increased (the mango emitted more energy) when the surface temperature was lower and the emissivity of mango is 0.71-0.84 and in the uncontrolled environment of open-air packaging yard in the mango orchard, the different transpiration rates of mango effected mainly by ambient temperature and relative humidity make the morning condition emissivity of 0.44-0.66 and the afternoon condition of 0.72-0.98. There was the effect of the different measured positions on the fruits where the physiology was different and the fluctuated environment in the latter condition made the wide range of emissivity of mangoes. This indicated the shortcoming of thermal imaging of horticultural product if the correct emissivity varied and difficult to set in the thermal camera setting, hence the inaccurate thermogram to be obtained. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper discusses the optimization of hyperparameters of the Multilayer Feedforward (MLF) Artificial Neural Network (ANN), for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) within freeway systems. The MLF model was developed and tested using simulated data generated from VISSIM traffic simulation software. The optimized hyperparameters include the number of hidden layers, the size of hidden layers, the learning rate, momentum, error epsilon, and training cycles. To reduce computational time, a stepwise approach was adopted to optimize these hyperparameters. The model's performance was evaluated based on the Fscore, which is the harmonic mean of the recall and precision metrics. This evaluation metric was used because the AID is an imbalanced binary classification problem, where normal instances are the majority class and incident instances are the minority class. The results showed that optimizing the hyperparameters of the MLF model resulted in a 0.79% improvement in the F-score of the model and a 0.32% improvement in the overall accuracy of the model. The near-optimal hyperparameters for the MLF model were determined to be 1 hidden layer with 35 neurons, a learning rate of 0.015, momentum of 0.9, an error epsilon of 1.00E-10, and 1000 training cycles. The study provides insights into optimizing the hyperparameters of ANNs for AID applications in traffic management systems, which can help improve the performance of such systems. The optimized model can be utilized by Traffic Management Centres (TMCs) to detect incidents accurately and in a timely manner, thereby reducing the negative impacts of traffic incidents and ensuring safe and efficient travel for drivers. © 2023 Computers and Industrial engineering. Increasing energy demands globally have accelerated the development of renewable technologies including solar photovoltaics (PV). However, this development has unavoidably led to the emergence of significant volumes PV waste considering 20-30 years life span before End of Life (EOL). The standard decision makers practices for PV EOL are disposal to the landfill, recycling, or reuse. Due to complexity of the decision environment, this study aims to analyze and rank solar PV disposition alternative using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on five main criteria including environmental, economic, social, policy and legislation and technical. AHP Aggregating Individual Priorities (AIP) aggregation method was utilized to evaluate the overall perspective of all the study participant. In addition, individual stakeholder group decision was assessed individually to understand potential different EOL disposition perspective from different stakeholder group. The findings of the analysis shows that the overall ranking of the alternatives based on the main criteria is leaning toward recycling compared to other alternatives. However, there is a variation in the decision between individual stakeholder group. © 2023 IEEE.

Wastewater treatment is a crucial process that ensures the sustainable use of water resources. It involves removing pollutants and contaminants from wastewater to make it safe for disposal or reuse. Sand filtration is a widely used method for wastewater treatment. This study presents an investigation of the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the design and optimization of sand filters in wastewater treatment. The study investigates the performance of different sand filter configurations, including slow sand filters, under varying operational conditions. A CFD model is developed to simulate the flow and transport of pollutants in the sand filters, and the model is validated against experimental data. The results show that the CFD model can accurately predict the removal efficiency of suspended solids (SS) and hydraulic resistance buildup in the sand filters. The study highlights the potential of CFD in optimizing sand filter design and operation to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wastewater treatment. The findings of this study can be used to guide the design and operation of sand filters in wastewater treatment plants for better performance and cost-effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

The research of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is extensively used to improve the capacity of networks beyond the fifth-generation. The recent merger of NOMA with ambient Backscatter Communication (BackCom), though opening new possibilities for massive connectivity, poses several challenges in dense wireless networks. One such challenge is the performance degradation of ambient BackCom in multi-cell NOMA networks under the effect of inter-cell interference. Driven by providing an efficient solution to the issue, this article proposes a new resource allocation framework that uses a duality theory approach. Specifically, the sum rate of the multi-cell network with backscatter tags and NOMA user equipment is maximized by formulating a joint optimization problem. To find the efficient base station transmit power and backscatter reflection coefficient in each cell, the original problem is first divided into two subproblems, and then the closed form solution is derived. A comparison with the Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) ambient BackCom and pure NOMA transmission has been provided. Simulation results of the proposed NOMA ambient BackCom indicate a significant improvement over the OMA ambient BackCom and pure NOMA in terms of sum-rate gains.
