This research was to study the effect of the environment condition during image captured including temperature and relative humidity in the packaging house of the mango exporting factory and in the orchard on the emissivity of mango fruit. The result showed that in the controlled environment of the packaging house in factory, the emissivity was increased (the mango emitted more energy) when the surface temperature was lower and the emissivity of mango is 0.71-0.84 and in the uncontrolled environment of open-air packaging yard in the mango orchard, the different transpiration rates of mango effected mainly by ambient temperature and relative humidity make the morning condition emissivity of 0.44-0.66 and the afternoon condition of 0.72-0.98. There was the effect of the different measured positions on the fruits where the physiology was different and the fluctuated environment in the latter condition made the wide range of emissivity of mangoes. This indicated the shortcoming of thermal imaging of horticultural product if the correct emissivity varied and difficult to set in the thermal camera setting, hence the inaccurate thermogram to be obtained. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper discusses the optimization of hyperparameters of the Multilayer Feedforward (MLF) Artificial Neural Network (ANN), for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) within freeway systems. The MLF model was developed and tested using simulated data generated from VISSIM traffic simulation software. The optimized hyperparameters include the number of hidden layers, the size of hidden layers, the learning rate, momentum, error epsilon, and training cycles. To reduce computational time, a stepwise approach was adopted to optimize these hyperparameters. The model's performance was evaluated based on the Fscore, which is the harmonic mean of the recall and precision metrics. This evaluation metric was used because the AID is an imbalanced binary classification problem, where normal instances are the majority class and incident instances are the minority class. The results showed that optimizing the hyperparameters of the MLF model resulted in a 0.79% improvement in the F-score of the model and a 0.32% improvement in the overall accuracy of the model. The near-optimal hyperparameters for the MLF model were determined to be 1 hidden layer with 35 neurons, a learning rate of 0.015, momentum of 0.9, an error epsilon of 1.00E-10, and 1000 training cycles. The study provides insights into optimizing the hyperparameters of ANNs for AID applications in traffic management systems, which can help improve the performance of such systems. The optimized model can be utilized by Traffic Management Centres (TMCs) to detect incidents accurately and in a timely manner, thereby reducing the negative impacts of traffic incidents and ensuring safe and efficient travel for drivers. © 2023 Computers and Industrial engineering. Increasing energy demands globally have accelerated the development of renewable technologies including solar photovoltaics (PV). However, this development has unavoidably led to the emergence of significant volumes PV waste considering 20-30 years life span before End of Life (EOL). The standard decision makers practices for PV EOL are disposal to the landfill, recycling, or reuse. Due to complexity of the decision environment, this study aims to analyze and rank solar PV disposition alternative using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on five main criteria including environmental, economic, social, policy and legislation and technical. AHP Aggregating Individual Priorities (AIP) aggregation method was utilized to evaluate the overall perspective of all the study participant. In addition, individual stakeholder group decision was assessed individually to understand potential different EOL disposition perspective from different stakeholder group. The findings of the analysis shows that the overall ranking of the alternatives based on the main criteria is leaning toward recycling compared to other alternatives. However, there is a variation in the decision between individual stakeholder group. © 2023 IEEE.

Wastewater treatment is a crucial process that ensures the sustainable use of water resources. It involves removing pollutants and contaminants from wastewater to make it safe for disposal or reuse. Sand filtration is a widely used method for wastewater treatment. This study presents an investigation of the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the design and optimization of sand filters in wastewater treatment. The study investigates the performance of different sand filter configurations, including slow sand filters, under varying operational conditions. A CFD model is developed to simulate the flow and transport of pollutants in the sand filters, and the model is validated against experimental data. The results show that the CFD model can accurately predict the removal efficiency of suspended solids (SS) and hydraulic resistance buildup in the sand filters. The study highlights the potential of CFD in optimizing sand filter design and operation to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wastewater treatment. The findings of this study can be used to guide the design and operation of sand filters in wastewater treatment plants for better performance and cost-effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

The research of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is extensively used to improve the capacity of networks beyond the fifth-generation. The recent merger of NOMA with ambient Backscatter Communication (BackCom), though opening new possibilities for massive connectivity, poses several challenges in dense wireless networks. One such challenge is the performance degradation of ambient BackCom in multi-cell NOMA networks under the effect of inter-cell interference. Driven by providing an efficient solution to the issue, this article proposes a new resource allocation framework that uses a duality theory approach. Specifically, the sum rate of the multi-cell network with backscatter tags and NOMA user equipment is maximized by formulating a joint optimization problem. To find the efficient base station transmit power and backscatter reflection coefficient in each cell, the original problem is first divided into two subproblems, and then the closed form solution is derived. A comparison with the Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) ambient BackCom and pure NOMA transmission has been provided. Simulation results of the proposed NOMA ambient BackCom indicate a significant improvement over the OMA ambient BackCom and pure NOMA in terms of sum-rate gains.

This paper introduces an experimental method to detect the motion of an electrostatic Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) resonator in aqueous media. The resonator comprises a micro cantilever beam subject to electrostatic actuation through a side electrode. A Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the resonator is developed to determine the in-plane mode shapes and their natural frequencies in order to facilitate the experimental study. The motion of the resonator lead to variations in its capacitance and induce a current. The developed experiments demonstrate that motion-induced current can be measured and analyzed to detect the motion of the resonator's higher-order modes and can be used in chemical sensing. © 2024 IEEE.

Magnesium-based batteries are potential candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries due to the divalent nature of magnesium cations and the natural abundance of magnesium resources. In this study, the electrochemical activity of Mg-6mass%Al-3mass%Ca anodes combined with Sn was investigated. Thin ribbons of the anode specimens were prepared by a single-roll rapid solidification method. The results showed that the electrochemical activity increased upon adding 1 mass% Sn, while it decreased for 3 mass% Sn. Based on the results of an X-ray diffraction analysis, the addition of Sn led to the formation of Mg2Sn and Ca2Sn phases, which increased the lattice distortion. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that these secondary phases were homogeneously distributed for 1 mass% Sn addition, while they were coarsely distributed for 3 mass% Sn. © 2025 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Waste batteries represent a critical waste stream due to their valuable materials and potential environmental hazards. Existing studies predominantly focus on recycling methods, technologies, and material recovery, often relegating policy and regulatory considerations to secondary or partial analyses. Notably, no comprehensive review exclusively addressing the policy and regulatory dimensions of waste battery management has been conducted. To fill this gap, this study systematically reviewed 135 original research articles using a systematic literature review (SLR) and content analysis, examining ten key aspects: (1) scope and definition, (2) collection systems, (3) recycling and processing standards, (4) producer responsibility, (5) public awareness and education, (6) regulatory framework, (7) incentives for recycling, (8) research and development, (9) data collection and reporting, and (10) partnership and stakeholder engagement. The findings highlight core policy elements essential for effective waste battery management, including multi-stakeholder collaboration, data-driven decision-making models, eco-friendly technology R&D, government oversight of informal recycling, lifecycle thinking, consumer participation through education campaigns, adoption of global best practices, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation. Additionally, the study proposes actionable policy statements tailored for countries lacking established waste battery policies. This research provides a foundational framework for policymakers and valuable insights for researchers in waste management, environmental policy, and public administration. © 2025 The Authors

In this paper we develop an integrated midcourse-terminal guidance methodology for a trailing interceptor in a many-on-many intercept scenario. The interceptor acts upon the engagement outcomes of the preceding interceptor group and can dynamically engage one of the evaders at the specified decision time, which separates the scenario in midcourse and terminal phases. We propose a methodology based on reachability analysis and adjoint mathematics tools for selecting an optimal decision (handover) point between the engagement phases. The handover point optimizes the trade-off between the expected miss distance and control effort over all possible allocations. The proposed approach facilitates computationally efficient solution for online operation in a salvo-attack scenario. The methodology is exemplified for minimum-time midcourse trajectories and proportional navigation terminal guidance law. © 2024 IEEE.

The utilization of plant extracts as environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors has garnered considerable interest in the field of metallic corrosion protection. The primary objective of this study was to explore a new approach for utilizing Dillenia suffruticosa leaves extract(DSLE) to provide corrosion protection for mild steel(MS) in a molar hydrochloric acid solution. The phytocompounds responsible for corrosion prevention were extracted using ethanol with Soxhlet apparatus. The effectiveness of the extract as a corrosion inhibitor was evaluated through gravimetric and electrochemical methods, along with surface analysis of the corroded steel samples. This analysis involved the use of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) to examine the specimens with and without addition of the extract as inhibitor. The findings demonstrate that DSLE exhibits notable efficacy as a corrosion inhibitor for MS in an acidic environment. The inhibition efficiency(IE)demonstrates a positive correlation with the concentration of the extract, ultimately reaching a maximum value of 81.4 % at the optimum concentration of 1000 mg/L of the extract investigated. Potentiodynamic polarization data revealed that the DSLE functions as a mixed-type inhibitor.
