Folding angle and wing flexibility influence the flight performance of origami winged fruits

Winged fruits possess a unique flight mechanism relying on simple geometric structures rather than neuromuscular control. This study proposes an innovative approach using origami techniques to create three-winged model fruits, serving as a proxy for understanding the flight dynamics of natural winged fruits. Paper is employed to simulate inherent wing flexibility, with the option to add plastic frames for rigidity. We comprehensively investigate the free fall motion of both rigid and flexible winged fruits through experimental and numerical analyses. Velocity–time curves reveal a three-stage descent pattern—acceleration, deceleration, and steady states. The overshoot phenomenon is attributed to rapid lift increase due to leading-edge vortices attaching stably to the wings. This insight sheds light on aerodynamics governing fruit flight. Compared with rigid wings, flexible wings exhibit two key properties—slower descent and higher self-orienting capability—that facilitate a more stable and longer-distance dispersal of seeds under crosswind conditions. Our study demonstrates the potential benefits of flexible wings in natural seed distribution. This study advances our understanding of winged fruit flight dynamics, utilizing origami as a powerful tool for biomimetic investigations. The findings have broad implications, from improving aerodynamic designs to developing efficient micro air vehicles and electronic microfliers, and understanding seed dispersal evolution. The limited availability of clean water resources in Gaza Strip is due to the increasing salinity of groundwater, which is due to unbalanced consumption. Furthermore, the increase in the poverty level among the people and the lack of fossil fuel resources, and the high intensity of solar radiation in the strip have grabbed the attention of the authors to think about a suitable alternative to produce potable water via solar energy. This study aims to investigate the linear Fresnel collector (LFC) coupled with a solar still-single effect active system. The solar still was designed to match the LFC output to avoid any heat losses that may decrease the system's effectiveness. A CFD simulation was carried out using Ansys Fluent software to predict temperature and pressure distributions to find out the efficiency of the LFC collector. The results showed that the use of LFC leads to an increase in the efficiency of the solar still, and the daily production of distilled water reaches 1.5 Litre /m2 © 2023 IEEE.

This paper investigates the dynamics of a hybrid power system (HPS) and powertrain configurations in a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), emphasizing its nonlinear behavior. The study focuses on a hybrid powertrain setup comprising a fuel cell (FC) as the primary source, complemented by an ultracapacitor (UC) and a battery as auxiliary sources, each subject to uncertainties. The system incorporates DC/DC boost converters linking the FC to the DC-Link, and bi-directional converters connecting the UC and battery to the DC-Link. Dynamic models are developed to capture the nonlinear characteristics of the subsystems. The primary goal is to develop a controller capable of simultaneously managing the DC/DC converters amidst uncertainties. A nonlinear control strategy based on Lyapunov theory is proposed to regulate the DC-link voltage and accurately track currents from the sources. The study ensures closed-loop stability under different operating conditions and uncertainties. Simulation results in MATLAB validate the efficacy of the proposed controllers, justifying the UC and battery’s ability to meet load demands and enhance fuel cell performance.

Seismic design codes are the standards that provide resistance for the structures against the potential seismic forces that the structure may face. One of the provisions in the seismic design codes is the strong column-weak beam (SCWB) requirement. It suggests that at that the sum of the flexural strength of the columns at a joint should be greater than those of the beams at the same joint. This requirement aims to prevent column yielding during an earthquake and avoid story mechanisms in moment frames. Although the seismic design codes suggest a minimum column-to-beam strength ratio, previous research has shown that this ratio may not be sufficient to provide desired collapse mechanisms for all conditions. Also, it has been observed that the column-to-beam strength ratio distribution along the height of the frame structures affects the understory and damage distribution. This study investigated the effect of different column-to-beam strength ratio distributions on the drift distribution of the reinforced concrete moment frames. For this purpose, different frames were considered with different numbers of stories and bays. OpenSeesPy framework was used for numerical modeling. To evaluate the seismic response of the model frames, nonlinear time history, and nonlinear static analyses were used. The results showed that the column-to-beam strength ratio distribution significantly affects the distribution of inter-story drift ratios. An effective column-to-beam strength ratio distribution was proposed at the end of the study. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of Mean-Variance (MV) and Safety-First (SF) portfolio selection strategies for high-volume/high-value traded stocks on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). Analyzing data from 288 stocks over 7,670 trading days (30 years), we estimated stock returns, assigned probability weights, and conducted optimization models. The results show that the Mean-Variance (MV0.5) strategy achieved the best balance between risk and return, boasting the highest mean and cumulative returns with moderate volatility. The Safety-First (SF) strategy, however, yielded negative cumulative returns, indicating potential issues. The Market strategy had the lowest mean return but also the least risk, appealing to risk-averse investors. The Portfolio Mean-Variance (PMV) strategy provided a reasonable balance of returns and risk. Statistical analysis revealed that only the MV0.5 strategy outperformed market returns. These findings offer crucial insights into risk assessment and portfolio management for investors evaluating these strategies against market performance. © 2024 IEEE.

It is said that about 50% of all bridges in service will be in service for more than 50 years by 2030. Therefore, measures against aging bridges are an issue. Bearing which is one of the bridge members has a role to support the dead load and live load of the superstructure. Furthermore, it has a function to cope with expansion and contraction of the girder due to temperature changes. However, the quantitative evaluation of the deterioration of the bearing and the effect on other members are unknown. In this study, we targeted bridges erected in Yamagata Prefecture. We measured the behavior of the target bridge due to temperature changes and conducted a static loading test using a 14tf truck. The deck of target bridge was replaced in 2019, and experiments were conducted before and after that. When the behavior with temperature change was compared before and after the replacement, it was confirmed that the deck replacement had a certain effect. The authors conducted a reproduction analysis of behavior due to temperature changes. As a result, it was confirmed that the measured value was between the analysis value considering deterioration and the analysis value not considering deterioration. The authors introduced a spring element during the analysis to quantify the degree of deterioration of the bearings. The authors performed an analysis on a model with a spring element and compared it with the experimental results of a static loading test. As a result, it was confirmed that the analysis value and the measured value of the natural frequency and the vertical displacement are approximated by changing the spring constant. From this, it is considered that this method is effective for quantifying bearing deterioration. © 2022 The Society of Materials Science, Japan

Construction teams are responsible for building complex projects within the allotted budget, time and expected quality. Thus, team members must be able to work with each other to avoid any complications during the construction process. As such, team supervisors must select from a pool of applicants or from their current roster of workers, which would be composed of different personalities and capabilities. This paper aims to identify the preferences of team supervisors when building up their team using conjoin analysis. The study found out that supervisors would like to have workers that respects and values their work and can work harmoniously with others. This study is beneficial for the human resource department of construction companies when recruiting workers, for the management when trying to develop their current personnel and for the workers who are trying to improve themselves. © 2024 ACM.

Study on the exchange bias (Hex) switching in a ferromagnet (FM)/antiferromagnet (AFM) bilayer driven by the spin-orbit torque (SOT) has been an explicit research field and current focus has been devoted to determining the approaches to drive the Hex switching along with specific SOT applications. Hex is magnetically dominant but only reveals the partial facet of IrMn, which is only responsible for the ferromagnetic component at the interface of AFM. Therefore, the complete facet of AFM and its interaction with SOT at an FM/AFM interface is still not fully uncovered. This research reports an SOT-driven hidden order transition behind Hex in a heavy metal (Pt)/FM (Co)/AFM (IrMn) trilayer along with the issue of switching activity at Co/IrMn interface. The exchange coupling across Co/IrMn interface allows a long-range spin order in the form of an exchange-spring configuration, yielding two kinds of order in IrMn: a canting-induced ferromagnetic order for hosting Hex and a hidden Néel order for preserving the antiferromagnetic nature. The former appears to be strongly coupled to the magnetization state of Co during the SOT switching, so it can be reversibly switched with Co on the Hex switching. On the contrary, the hidden Néel order transition re-orientated to the current direction appears to be irreversibly driven by SOT and independent on the current polarity, which can reflect on the magnetoresistance (MR) measurement and X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) spectroscopy. Finally, a micromagnetic simulation reveals the dynamic IrMn spins are mainly based on a canting type interface instead of an uncompensated type via an exchange-spring coupling with Co. © 2023 IEEE.

Antiferromagnet (AFM) has currently participated in the spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) technolopgy due to its great potential to be applied to the field-free SOT switching and promote the thermal stability of MRAM. However, effect of the introduction of AFM into the basic structure of SOT-MRAM composed of a heavy metal/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer was still not comprehensively understood. This work reports the effect of how an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order modifies the strength of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in a heavy metal (Pt)/FM (Co)/AFM (IrMn) trilayer, studied by SOT switching and loop-shift method. Increasing the AFM order reflected on exchange bias (Hex) through increasing the thickness of IrMn appears to significantly reduce the DMI strength of the trilayer, which leads to the reduction of the external field for yielding a complete SOT switching. The reduced DMI strength may ascribe to the Hex-hosted uni-directional anisotropy suppressing the neighboring spin canting in the FM layer. This stabilization for the magnetic moments via the Hex-hosted uni-directional anisotropy also improved the stability of SOT switching on the random read/write characterization, in which the strong AFM order would promote the memristivity for neuromorphic application and the weak AFM order would give rise to the stochasticity for the purpose of physically unclonable functionality. This work demonstrates the significance of an intrinsic tuning over the AFM order would serve as a switch to turn the SOT device into a stochastic/memristive cell to bridge probabilistic and neuromorphic computing. © 2023 IEEE.
