The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), established in 1927, has significantly evolved, especially since the 1980s with major reforms and technological advancements. This paper analyzes the performance of portfolios in the Media, Telecommunications, and Information Technology sectors listed on the PSE over a 30-year span. Using mean-variance analysis, it evaluates portfolio optimization by balancing risk and return. Drawing on data from 1993 to 2022, the study examines portfolios across various risk-return frontiers (RRFs) and compares the service sector's performance. The results highlight varying portfolio metrics across RRFs, with some showing outperformance and higher RRFs leading to diminishing returns. The study also identifies key companies with significant stock allocations, providing strategic insights for portfolio construction. These findings offer investors guidance on optimizing portfolio strategies within the PSE for better decision-making and investment outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

A collaborative course called Global Awareness for Technology Implementation was conducted by the Faculty of engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The objective of this course was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences between Thai and Japanese students through project work, using an engineering design approach and the design thinking process to create innovation relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the class, experts shared their knowledge and experiences with the students. The students then worked on their respective projects to develop solution concepts using the design thinking process. The proposed ideas include the application for English class, smart water quality checker, hydrogen-based energy system for rural area, reduced wasted fashion solution, and auto waste sorting machine. Finally, this study concluded with a summary of the results and findings on the empathy process in the chosen SDGs, and of the commonalities and differences between Thailand and Japan in terms of ideation. © 2023 IEEE.

Forest fires have a significant impact on ecosystems and human life, especially in northern Thailand, where Chiang Mai is severely affected. Traditional methods for detecting forest fires have limitations, so there is a need for advanced simulation models. This research uses Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) to develop a forest fire simulation for Chiang Mai. The methodology involves collecting historical data, performing Multiple Regression Analysis, designing the simulation, and testing it. Data from 1998 to 2021, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed/direction, burn area, and slope, were collected from various sources. Multiple regression analysis identified wind speed as the most significant factor affecting burn area. The forest fire simulation, designed using ZF Wang's spread model and tested with AnyLogic, showed that wind direction and speed are crucial in fire spread. The simulation accurately predicted high-risk areas, helping in proactive planning and response. This study confirms that wind is a critical factor in forest fire spread, providing a valuable tool for fire districts to improve preparedness and management. Future research should focus on refining the model with localized data and integrating real-time detection to improve its accuracy and applicability. © 2024 IEEE.

We propose a new magnetic resonance simultaneous multislice imaging (SMS) by developing our previously proposed imaging method based on the principle of holography. Different amplitude modulations for each slice are applied to separate the slice images. The slice image separation is performed using a data-driven science in which U-Nets separates the slice images using the given amplitude modulation as a cue. Simulation experiments using a real-valued and an phase-varied image model revealed the relationship between the coefficients of amplitude modulation, the number of simultaneously excited slices, and image quality. In addition, we performed image separation experiments on the holographic imaging method by approximating the excited volume region as five slice images with no gaps, and showed the feasibility of image separation. This method has the potential to be a new type of SMS.

Study of bioaerosol disinfection kinetics and application of nonlinear regression modeling for optimization of TiO2-based photocatalytic disinfection process

Bacteria and viruses are some of the major sources of indoor air pollution. Many strategies are utilized to control indoor biopollutants. Among the new emerging technologies, this work focuses on the photocatalytic oxidation process and application of disinfection models to optimize the photocatalytic process in bioaerosol control. The kinetics of bioaerosol disinfection was investigated in the photocatalytic process with nonlinear regression analysis for Serratia marcescens and E. coli bacteria. The Chick–Watson model was found suitable and was applied for determination of the inactivation kinetics. The inactivation rate constant k’ was found to be 0.0038 min−1 for S. marcescens and 0.09 min−1 for E. coli. The outcomes showed that in the process of disinfection kinetics of bioaerosols, pseudo-first-order kinetics fits well. With nonlinear regression analysis, a model was developed based on functional parameters such as UV intensity (20 to 100 W/m2), relative humidity (30 to 85%) and air velocity (37 to 112 ft/min) for S. marcescens and TiO2 loading (960 and 1516 mg/m2), UV intensity (0.5 to 3.4 mW/cm2) and relative humidity (51 to 85%) for E. coli. For E. coli overall inactivation was found to increase with an increase in TiO2 loading, RH or UV intensities. The inactivation rate of S. marcescens increased with an increase in UV intensity;however, it was found to decrease at very high or low values of relative humidity and air velocity. Hence, the optimum values for relative velocity were found to be 50% and air velocity of 74 ft/min for S. marcescens. The rate expressions derived for both data can be utilized for predicting and optimizing the disinfection rate at different conditions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Photocatalysis using various nanomaterials of different characteristics has been investigated with various metrics for achieving optimal efficiency. However, the spatial distribution of light intensities from the light source, a key factor in photocatalysis process and the selection of an appropriate kinetic model for explaining disinfection characteristics of different microorganisms have not been given ample consideration. In this study, a suitable model has been applied to identify spatial distribution of light based on the light source used and applied in the kinetic models to identify the disinfection rate. Disinfection efficiencies of nanoparticles (TiO2 and Cu-doped TiO2) with different light intensities on gram-positive bacteria, Mycobacterium smegmatis and gram-negative bacteria E. coli was evaluated. The kinetic study revealed that Mycobacterium smegmatis fits well with Chick–Watson model, while E. coli fits well with delayed Chick–Watson model. The rate constants (k) were found to be 0.013 min−1 (TiO2), 0.021 min−1 (3%Cu–TiO2) and 0.020 min−1 (Cu2+) for Mycobacterium and 0.019 min−1 (TiO2) for E. coli. From model evaluation, light intensity decreased exponentially from 3.07 µW cm−2 (3 cm) to 0.98 µW cm−2 (6 cm) and 0.10 µW cm−2 (25 cm) resulting in a sharp decline in the inactivation potential;however, the effect was insignificant beyond 10 cm. On doubling the intensity, disinfection efficiency increased by 1.6 log CFUml−1 (TiO2) and 2.4 log CFU ml−1 (Cu–TiO2), but with one-fourth of intensity it decreased by 1.2 log CFUml−1 (TiO2) and 1.8 log CFUml−1 (Cu–TiO2). Therefore, by optimizing the combination of nanoparticles like TiO2 and Cu, light intensity at 6.14 µW cm−2 and optimal spatial distribution of the light source at 3 cm, increased efficiency of microbial disinfection could be achieved. In our study, we explore methods for detecting unwanted content lurking in visual datasets. We provide a theoretical analysis demonstrating that a model capable of successfully partitioning visual data can be obtained using only textual data. Based on the analysis, we propose Hassle-Free Textual Training (HFTT), a streamlined method capable of acquiring detectors for unwanted visual content, using only synthetic textual data in conjunction with pre-trained vision-language models. HFTT features an innovative objective function that significantly reduces the necessity for human involvement in data annotation. Furthermore, HFTT employs a clever textual data synthesis method, effectively emulating the integration of unknown visual data distribution into the training process at no extra cost. The unique characteristics of HFTT extend its utility beyond traditional out-of-distribution detection, making it applicable to tasks that address more abstract concepts. The global trend in broadband internet services reveals an increased focus on reliability, customer service, and integrating new technologies like IoT, 5G, or FMC. Customer service is primarily determined by network quality and reliability, price, and the quality of customer support provided by ISPs. Meanwhile, existing network quality measurement methods often involve numerous parameters, ranging from download speed and server response time to video streaming quality, each providing a separate insight into aspects of user experience. Therefore, the importance of the composite index method is becoming increasingly relevant. This method allows the integration of these various parameters into a single, easily understandable integrated index, simplifying complex data analysis into a more concise and interpretable form. As a result of this approach, internet service providers can more effectively monitor and enhance the customer experience and the overall quality of their services for various purposes with a single composite parameter value, providing reassurance and confidence in their operations.
