A New Look for Outage and Ergodic Improvements in Coordinated IoT Paradigms with Hybrid Multiple Access

As spectrum utilization becomes increasingly scarce due to the exponential growth of intelligent connected devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), developing efficient communication protocols with simultaneous improvements in energy and spectrum usage is critical in response to the demands of cost-effective IoT devices. In this work, we propose a hybrid orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple-access protocol in coordinated direct uplink/downlink and relay transmission for low-cost IoT paradigms, where a source node engages in direct transmission with proximate IoT users and relies on a relay node for distant connections. This protocol offers a successive interference cancellation–free approach and does not require any channel disparity for power allocation. Exact and asymptotic analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC) are derived. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed protocol significantly improves OP–by 8 folds for the respective proximate users while maintaining the same OP for distant users over classical coordinated non-orthogonal multiple access–and delivers superior EC performance for proximate IoT users at low to moderate signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and distant users at most SNR. Moreover, critical tasks for minimizing the maximal OP and maximizing the ergodic sum capacity have been undertaken to achieve outage fairness and enhance the overall system's capacity. These non-convex problems are efficiently addressed by applying the analytical asymptotic-inspired alternative optimization. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Multi-robot belief space planning (MR-BSP) is essential for reliable and safe autonomy. While planning, each robot maintains a belief over the state of the environment and reasons how the belief would evolve in the future for different candidate actions. Yet, existing MR-BSP works have a common assumption that the beliefs of different robots are consistent at planning time. Such an assumption is often highly unrealistic, as it requires prohibitively extensive and frequent communication capabilities. In practice, each robot may have a different belief about the state of the environment. Crucially, when the beliefs of different robots are inconsistent, state-of-the-art MR-BSP approaches could result in a lack of coordination between the robots, and in general, could yield dangerous, unsafe and suboptimal decisions. In this paper, we tackle this crucial gap. We develop a novel decentralized algorithm that is guaranteed to find a consistent joint action. For a given robot, our algorithm reasons for action preferences about 1) its local information, 2) what it perceives about the reasoning of the other robot, and 3) what it perceives about the reasoning of itself perceived by the other robot. This algorithm finds a consistent joint action whenever these steps yield the same best joint action obtained by reasoning about action preferences; otherwise, it self-triggers communication between the robots. Experimental results show efficacy of our algorithm in comparison with two baseline algorithms.

Direct current microgrids (DCMG) have garnered immense popularity due to the absence of frequency synchronization, reactive power compensation, and skin effect issues. However, challenges associated with the voltage regulation of dc bus persist in DCMG. This paper introduces a DCMG consisting of wind, photovoltaic, hydrogen storage system, ultracapacitor, and battery. The primary objectives are to sustain the dc bus voltage and maintain the power balance. Hence, to achieve the desired objectives and for the reliable operation of DCMG, an integral sliding mode controller (ISMC) is proposed. To evaluate the performance of ISMC, DCMG is set up and simulated in Matlab/Simulink. Through comprehensive simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed ISMC is demonstrated. Furthermore, the efficacy of the implemented control approach is validated through the real-time experiments conducted with hardware in the loop.

Recently, thermal cameras have been used in various fields, including surveillance systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as they perform better in low light than visible-light cameras. Some challenges in the surveillance system or ADAS field related to thermal cameras are occlusion and thermal crossover between objects with similar appearances during object detection or object tracking tasks, which can lead to misdetection, false positives, and lost tracking. In this paper, performance analysis of you-only-look-once (YOLO) combined with deep online real-time tracking (DeepSORT) on thermal video-based online multi-object tracking (MOT) in occlusion and thermal crossover scene is presented. YOLO, as one of state-of-the-art method for detection task, is used for detection system. Then, the detected object from YOLO is tracked using DeepSORT. The results demonstrate that the online MOT of sequential thermal images using YOLO-DeepSORT achieved a MOTA score of 44.2% and IDF1 of 45.3%. Thus, negative example was added in YOLO training process to reduce false detection, and it gives improvement with MOTA score of 63.8% and IDF1 score of 54.6%.

Theoretical simulation of steady flowing manifold in hybrid pneumatic power system

Improving the energy efficiency of existing power systems is part of energy conservation and carbon reduction efforts. Internal combustion engines (ICEs) are currently the most commonly used power source in transportation, and they can be combined with gas power sources to form hybrid power systems for enhanced energy efficiency and potential commercialization. This study introduces hybrid pneumatic systems that integrate energy from ICEs and exhaust gas through a manifold to reuse waste heat. However, the turbulence caused by compressed air in the manifold can prevent the smooth transfer and mixing of thermal energy, leading to reduced power at the final outlet. We use ANSYS Fluent software to conduct heat flow streamline analysis of the three-dimensional flow field in the manifold structure, with key parameters including throttle valve opening, manifold geometry, pressure, and temperature. Through this analysis, we explore the flow situation and heat transfer phenomenon inside the pipe, observe the flow field changes in the pipe, and adjust the diameter of the compressed air end channel for effective thermal energy. A backflow with velocity magnitude up to 72 m/s in high pressure case can be solved by compressing pipe and temperature increases from 349.9 K to 682.5 K with more efficient heat transfer and gas mixing. Thermal power, enthalpy, and mass flow rate of the hybrid power system are also investigated, enabling the ICE to operate at its optimal point. The waste heat from the ICE can also be recycled and converted into effective mechanical energy through flow work. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This paper introduces a hybrid control strategy that integrates the unique features of natural logarithm sliding mode control (lnSMC) and fuzzy logic systems. The lnSMC control approach ensures that the vibration amplitude remains within a bound, as determined by the parameters of the lnSMC switching function. Furthermore, the fuzzy logic system is employed to approximate the nonlinearities and uncertainties inherent in the suspension system components, such as the spring and damper. The stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed using the Lyapunov stability theorem, guaranteeing convergence within a finite time. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, a simulation study was carried out using a quarter-car suspension model, considering the system’s nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and various external disturbances. The results indicate that the proposed controller significantly improves ride comfort while maintaining suspension deflection and road holding within critical safety limits.

The present work reports on experiences gleaned in the application of systems engineering on a research project whose objective is technology development. The benefits of systems engineering for system development throughout the lifecycle are well known. Inclusion of systems engineering has a measurable and significant beneficial effect on system development project performance measured by costs, schedules, and features implemented. Technology development however differs from product or service-oriented development and the potential systems engineering for such are unknown. The authors sought to utilize proven MBSE methodologies to aid in a research project for an emerging technology. The project addressed by the present work was a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research Project to determine the feasibility and utility of wireless acoustic power transfer systems in an operational environment. The purpose of this paper therefore is to report on the selection and application of a MBSE methodology for this small-scale technology development program. A summary of the work performed by the MBSE team is given, along with example modeling products and their intended uses. It discusses missteps as well as successes and from its findings proposes additional research to develop a method to evaluate these methodologies based on the nature of the project.

The Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) algorithm is widely utilized in image processing for tasks such as detection, classification, and tracking. However, several challenges arise when implementing this algorithm on computing platforms with limited memory and low power consumption, such as mobile robots and drones. This work presents an in-depth analysis and implementation of three innovative hardware architectures for HOG, specifically designed for real-time processing using Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in the context of mobile robot localization. The primary focus of these architectures is to simplify the processing operations involved in gradient magnitude and orientation calculation, histogram generation, and normalization. These simplifications lead to a reduction in resource utilization and energy consumption.
