This paper introduces a hybrid control strategy that integrates the unique features of natural logarithm sliding mode control (lnSMC) and fuzzy logic systems. The lnSMC control approach ensures that the vibration amplitude remains within a bound, as determined by the parameters of the lnSMC switching function. Furthermore, the fuzzy logic system is employed to approximate the nonlinearities and uncertainties inherent in the suspension system components, such as the spring and damper. The stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed using the Lyapunov stability theorem, guaranteeing convergence within a finite time. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, a simulation study was carried out using a quarter-car suspension model, considering the system’s nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and various external disturbances. The results indicate that the proposed controller significantly improves ride comfort while maintaining suspension deflection and road holding within critical safety limits.

The present work reports on experiences gleaned in the application of systems engineering on a research project whose objective is technology development. The benefits of systems engineering for system development throughout the lifecycle are well known. Inclusion of systems engineering has a measurable and significant beneficial effect on system development project performance measured by costs, schedules, and features implemented. Technology development however differs from product or service-oriented development and the potential systems engineering for such are unknown. The authors sought to utilize proven MBSE methodologies to aid in a research project for an emerging technology. The project addressed by the present work was a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research Project to determine the feasibility and utility of wireless acoustic power transfer systems in an operational environment. The purpose of this paper therefore is to report on the selection and application of a MBSE methodology for this small-scale technology development program. A summary of the work performed by the MBSE team is given, along with example modeling products and their intended uses. It discusses missteps as well as successes and from its findings proposes additional research to develop a method to evaluate these methodologies based on the nature of the project.

The Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) algorithm is widely utilized in image processing for tasks such as detection, classification, and tracking. However, several challenges arise when implementing this algorithm on computing platforms with limited memory and low power consumption, such as mobile robots and drones. This work presents an in-depth analysis and implementation of three innovative hardware architectures for HOG, specifically designed for real-time processing using Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in the context of mobile robot localization. The primary focus of these architectures is to simplify the processing operations involved in gradient magnitude and orientation calculation, histogram generation, and normalization. These simplifications lead to a reduction in resource utilization and energy consumption. Cortical visual prostheses are designed to treat blindness by restoring visual perceptions through artificial electrical stimulation of the primary visual cortex (V1). Intracortical microelectrodes produce the smallest visual percepts and thus higher resolution vision - like a higher density of pixels on a monitor. However, intracortical microelectrodes must maintain a minimum spacing to preserve tissue integrity. One solution to increase the density of percepts is to implant and stimulate multiple visual areas, such as V1 and V2, although the properties of microstimulation in V2 remain largely unexplored. We provide a direct comparison of V1 and V2 microstimulation in two common marmoset monkeys. We find similarities in response trends between V1 and V2 but differences in threshold, neural activity duration, and spread of activity at the threshold current. This has implications for using multi-area stimulation to increase the resolution of cortical visual prostheses.

In this paper, an application of visual inertial odometry is described. Details of the implementation including the calibration are also described. The method uses visual data from two cameras and the measurements from inertial measurement unit. Previous researches usually used only front view image, whereas this study uses three different visual data from different view angles: front view, floor view, and ceiling view. The results are compared and the effect according to different view angles is analyzed. The comparison shows that the number of detectable features affects the performance of the visual odometry.

Organizations are increasingly moving towards the cloud computing paradigm, in which an on-demand access to a pool of shared configurable resources is provided. However, security challenges, which are particularly exacerbated by the multitenancy and virtualization features of cloud computing, present a major obstacle. In particular, sharing of resources among potentially untrusted tenants in access controlled cloud datacenters can result in increased risk of data leakage. To address such risk, we propose an efficient risk-aware sensitive property-driven virtual resource assignment mechanism for cloud datacenters. We have used two information-theoretic measures, i.e., KL-divergence and mutual information, to represent sensitive properties in the dataset. Based on the vulnerabilities of cloud architecture and the sensitive property profile, we have formulated the problem as a cost-drive optimization problem. The problem is shown to be NP-complete. Accordingly, we have proposed two heuristics and presented simulation based performance results for cloud datacenters with multiple sensitivity. © 2025, CC BY.

The growing number of wireless edge devices has magnified challenges concerning energy, bandwidth, latency, and data heterogeneity. These challenges have become bottlenecks for distributed learning. To address these issues, this paper presents a novel approach that ensures energy efficiency for distributionally robust federated learning (FL) with over air computation (AirComp). In this context, to effectively balance robustness with energy efficiency, we introduce a novel client selection method that integrates two complementary insights: a deterministic one that is designed for energy efficiency, and a probabilistic one designed for distributional robustness. Simulation results underscore the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, revealing its superior performance compared to baselines from both robustness and energy efficiency perspectives, achieving more than 3-fold energy savings compared to the considered baselines.

Recently, compression of intermediate data has been proposed to accelerate of memory and I/O intensive high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Accelerator-based com- pression/decompression is proposed to hide the storage latency of large intermediate data generated/consumed by the application that cannot fit in the node’s memory. In this work, such a scheme has been evaluated using several compression frameworks (CPU, GPU, and FPGA-based). A novel FPGA-based compression/decompression scheme was developed that completely overlaps the movement of the application’s data with the application’s compute kernels on the CPU. This yields applications’ performance levels on-par with utilizing memory-only storage buffers. A simple lossy compression scheme was developed and implemented. This scheme achieved ∼5X compression ratio at 2−6 or ∼1.5% relative error, which is similar to the best in-class compression techniques (at the same point-wise relative error). Experimental results showed that the new FPGA-based compression achieves application’s performance levels very close to using a memory buffer for intermediate data with significant speedup over direct disk storage. Experiments also showed that compared to CPU- and GPU-based compression frameworks, it achieves better performance levels at a fraction of the power consumption. © 2024, The Authors.
