The large impact on global warming of steam power plants may trigger a variety of risk events that could disrupt the business sustainability of coal industries. Research literature still lacks investigations that assess risk events and determine mitigation programs to tackle critical risk events. The purpose of this study was to determine risk events, assess risk events, and determine mitigation programs. The research activities of this study consisted of reviewing related literature, interviewing three managers in three companies, and slightly modifying the House of Risk model. The results show that the most important risk events are: low coal reserves, frequent changes in governmental policies, and others. The outcomes of this research may help coal industry practitioners in Indonesia to understand risk events that could affect the business sustainability of their companies in the future. Also, the Indonesian government can use the results of this research to provide policies that support business sustainability.

This paper studies the complex ecological dynamics of Batumi on the Black Sea coast, through adetailed analysis of environmental factors and their impact. We use Business Intelligence (BI) methods to explore the complex interactions between natural and human impacts on the local ecosystems. By using data-focused approaches, including statistical analysis and predictive modeling, we aim to distinguish patterns and trends in ecological dynamics. This study aspires to make clear the complex relationships between environmental factors such as climate change, pollution levels, habitat degradation, and biodiversity loss, and their impacts on the coastal ecosystem of Batumi. Through this study, we aim to provide valuable information on sustainable management practices and conservation measures to protect the ecological integrity of this important coastal region.

This paper proposes a novel operation for controlling a mobile robot using a head-mounted device. Conventionally, robots are operated using computers or a joystick, which creates limitations in usability and flexibility because control equipment has to be carried by hand. This lack of flexibility may prevent workers from multitasking or carrying objects while operating the robot. To address this limitation, we propose a hands-free method to operate the mobile robot with a human gaze in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment. The proposed work is demonstrated using the HoloLens 2 to control the mobile robot, Robotnik Summit-XL, through the eye-gaze in AR. Stable speed control and navigation of the mobile robot were achieved through admittance control which was calculated using the gaze position. The experiment was conducted to compare the usability between the joystick and the proposed operation, and the results were validated through surveys (i.e., SUS, SEQ). The survey results from the participants after the experiments showed that the wearer of the HoloLens accurately operated the mobile robot in a collaborative manner. The results for both the joystick and the HoloLens were marked as easy to use with above-average usability. This suggests that the HoloLens can be used as a replacement for the joystick to allow hands-free robot operation and has the potential to increase the efficiency of human-robot collaboration in situations when hands-free controls are needed.

Falls are one of the most dangerous problems for the elderly. A reliable fall detection system can aid in reducing the harmful repercussions of an unintentional fall. The focus of this paper is on a dataset that includes signals from portable devices. We propose a simple feature selection approach to reduce the number of effective input attributes based on a voting strategy. The dataset is classified into three categories, i.e., pre-fall, fall and post-fall using various machine learning approaches. The computational time is significantly reduced for most of the classification algorithms, and the relative reduction reaches to 66.67% with decision tree algorithm. Classification accuracy can reach as high as 95.17% when using neural network, while the relative reductions on the classification accuracy due to the feature selection do not exceed 1.50%. © 2022 IEEE.

Although photodetection based on two-dimensional(2D)van der Waals(vdWs)P-N heterojunction has attracted extensive attention recently,their low responsivity(R)due to the lack of carrier gain mechanism in reverse bias or zero bias operation hinders their applications in advanced photodetection ***,a black phosphorus/rhodamine 6G/molybdenum disulfide(BP/R6G/MoS_(2))photodiode with high responsivity at reverse bias or zero bias has been achieved by using interfacial charge transfer of R6G molecules assembled between heterojunction *** formed vdWs interface achieves high performance photoresponse by efficiently separating the additional photogenerated electrons and holes generated by R6G *** devices sensitized by the dye molecule R6G exhibit enhanced photodetection performance without sacrificing the photoresponse *** them,the R increased by 14.8-20.4 times,and the specific detectivity(D^(*))increased by 24.9-34.4 *** strategy based on interlayer assembly of dye molecules proposed here may pave a new way for realizing high-performance photodetection based on 2D vdWs heterojunctions with high responsivity and fast response speed.

Automatic liver tumor detection from computed tomography (CT) makes clinical examinations more accurate. However, deep learning-based detection algorithms are characterized by high sensitivity and low precision, which hinders diagnosis given that false-positive tumors must first be identified and excluded. These false positives arise because detection models incorrectly identify partial volume artifacts as lesions, which in turn stems from the inability to learn the perihepatic structure from a global perspective. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel slice-fusion method in which mining the global structural relationship between the tissues in the target CT slices and fusing the features of adjacent slices according to the importance of the tissues. Furthermore, we design a new network based on our slice-fusion method and Mask R-CNN detection model, called Pinpoint-Net. We evaluated proposed model on the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) dataset and our liver metastases dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our slice-fusion method not only enhance tumor detection ability via reducing the number of false-positive tumors smaller than 10mm, but also improve segmentation performance. Without bells and whistles, a single Pinpoint-Net showed outstanding performance in liver tumor detection and segmentation on LiTS test dataset compared with other state-of-the-art models. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

The present study investigates the usage of a novel natural dye derived from red algae of Morocco in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) for the first time. The main pigments responsible for sensitizing the semiconductor TiO2 coatings in the red algae were identified as phycoerythrin, carotenoid, and chlorophyll. The efficiency of a DSSC made from red algae was compared to that of a solar cell made from chlorophyll alone. The photovoltaic performance of the DSSC was evaluated through photocurrent density to photovoltage (J-V) characteristic analysis, and the efficiency was found to be 0.93%. To gain insights into its behavior, the absorbance and photoluminescence in a broad range were studied. Both absorbance and photoluminescence exhibited a broad-spectrum range. Additionally, electronic properties, such as HOMO, LUMO, energy gap, and chemical reactivity parameters, were studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Herd: Using multiple, smaller LLMs to match the performances of proprietary, large LLMs via an intelligent composer

Currently, over a thousand LLMs exist that are multi-purpose and are capable of performing real world tasks, including Q&A, text summarization, content generation, etc. However, accessibility, scale and reliability of free models prevents them from being widely deployed in everyday use cases. To address the first two issues of access and scale, organisations such as HuggingFace have created model repositories where users have uploaded model weights and quantized versions of models trained using different paradigms, as well as model cards describing their training process. While some models report performance on commonly used benchmarks, not all do, and interpreting the real world impact of trading off performance on a benchmark for model deployment cost, is unclear. Here, we show that a herd of open source models can match or exceed the performance of proprietary models via an intelligent router. We show that a Herd of open source models is able to match the accuracy of ChatGPT, despite being composed of models that are effectively 2.5x smaller. We show that in cases where GPT is not able to answer the query, Herd is able to identify a model that can, at least 40% of the time. © 2023, CC BY.

Shifting burdens: How delayed decarbonisation of road transport affects other sectoral emission reductions

In 2022, fuel combustion in road transport accounted for approximately 21% (760 million tonnes) of CO2 emissions in the European Union (EU). Road transport is the only sector with rising emissions, with an increase of 24% compared to 1990. The EU initially aimed to ban new CO2-emitting cars by 2030 but has since delayed this target to 2035, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the push for rapid decarbonisation. The pace of decarbonisation in this sector will either ease or intensify the pressure on other sectors to stay within the EU’s carbon budget. This paper explores the effects of speeding up or slowing down the transition in road transport. We reveal that a slower decarbonisation path not only drives up system costs by 126 billion e/a (6%) but also demands more than a doubling of the CO2 price from 137 to 290 e/tCO2in 2030 to trigger decarbonisation in other sectors. On the flip side, accelerating the shift to cleaner transport proves to be the most cost-effective strategy, giving room for more gradual changes in the heating and industrial sectors, while reducing the reliance on carbon removal in later years. Earlier mandates than currently envisaged by the EU can avoid stranded assets and save up to 43 billion e/a compared to current policies. © 2025, CC BY.
