Practical applications of artificial intelligence increasingly often have to deal with the streaming properties of real data, which, considering the time factor, are subject to phenomena such as periodicity and more or less chaotic degeneration – resulting directly in the concept drifts. The modern concept drift detectors almost always assume immediate access to labels, which, due to their cost, limited availability, and possible delay, has been shown to be unrealistic. This work proposes an unsupervised Parallel Activations Drift Detector, utilizing the outputs of an untrained neural network, presenting its key design elements, intuitions about processing properties, and a pool of computer experiments demonstrating its competitiveness with state-of-the-art methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The presented study focuses on imbalanced data stream classification that requires fast processing of incoming data without memorizing it. An additional difficulty is the imbalanced data distribution, i.e., significant disparities among objects from different classes, which can change over time. We have proposed a novel classifier for a non-stationary and imbalanced data stream to solve the task mentioned above One-Class Support Vector Machine Weighted Ensemble (OCWE). OCWE, on the one hand, uses a pool of binary classifiers to deal with the disparity between classes. On the other hand, the ability of the classifier ensemble to follow the changes in data distributions is provided by updating its lineup based on currently incoming training examples. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated through extensive experimental studies on synthetic and real data streams. The results prove that OCWE can outperform state-of-the-art classifiers for the considered task. © 2024 IEEE.

Currently, most data requires stream processing. This kind of processing causes new challenges in classifier learning method, such as data difficulties for example data imbalance since we cannot observe the entire set of data simultaneously or concept drift, which is the possibility of changes in the probabilistic characteristics of the processed data. These challenges were addressed by proposing a new learning algorithm that maintains consistency with the current data distribution by training a classifier ensemble with the changing lineup and applying dedicated mechanisms to account for the imbalance of the incoming data stream. The proposed IMB-WAE (Imbalance Weighted Aging Ensemble) method has been evaluated on the basis of exhaustive computer experiments conducted on a large number of real and synthetic data streams assessing the impact of its parameters on classification quality and confirming its quality compared to the state-of-the-art algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

Processing non-stationary data streams has gained a significant research interest in the recent years. Most of the current state-of-the-art approaches in the literature exhibit hybrid solutions based on an ensemble learning paradigm, extending its parallel architecture with a drift detector. Such integrated mechanism of concept drift detection often relies on the metadescription of incoming data. The article presents a proposition of a novel hybrid classifier - the Metafeature Concept Selector. The method employs the analysis of statistical metafeatures calculated on subsequent data batches to identify the currently processed concept. The work is concluded with an extensive experimental analysis of synthetic data streams with recurrent concepts, various dimensionality and various concept change frequencies, showing that the proposed approach brings improvement when integrated with state-of-the-art base incremental learners. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, there has been an energy transition in which fossil fuel-fired power plants are being replaced by renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics. While the influence of factors such as location and method of installation or the sun's position above the horizon is deterministic, the weather factor is rather random. Weather data can be easily obtained from nearby weather stations, but some weather phenomena are so dynamic that data obtained in this way can become useless. When considering the problem of classifying weather conditions based on production data of photovoltaic installations, we propose two new features extracted from the production data that describe the overall level of sunshine and the variability of sunlight. Three supervised learning methods were used to classify the dataset: CNN, Random Forest classifier and Decision Tree Classifier. Reference values were obtained by generating classification results from the raw output and compared with those generated from the two new features. The experiments showed a statistically significant advantage for the models fitted to the data extended with the new features. © 2024 IEEE.

Bulk construction of pattern classifiers, whether for optimizing input data configurations or method hyperparameters, is a computationally highly complex task. The main problem is the prediction quality evaluation function based on estimation using the selected experimental protocol. In the case of iterative optimization algorithms, such an evaluation is computationally-intensive, runs in each iteration, and requires a separate data partition for quality estimation. So-called proxy models may be alternative solutions, which estimate classifier quality on data characteristics without the need to train the prediction model. There are some premises that the problem complexity measures can be used for this purpose. However, this paper negatively verifies this hypothesis – confirming the predictive potential of evaluating the effectiveness of models by complexity measures but also showing a relatively large measurement error in direct relation between quality metric and proxy measure. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The anticipated expansion of TinyML-related technologies will require methods for efficient ML model development. In this paper, we present a method for obtaining a set of ML models for TinyML systems that satisfies the assumption that a more efficient model is also more complex and therefore consumes more energy. The constant increase in traffic volume triggers the development of new network optimization methods. Machine learning techniques are one of the promising research directions, as they provide the necessary tools to improve network performance in various aspects. Furthermore, prediction-based algorithms are getting the attention of researchers to achieve more precise network operations. In this paper, we approach the traffic prediction problem in backbone optical networks. We propose a model based on the Voting Regressor, combining Random Forest and Linear Regression. We create two large semi-synthetic datasets with daily patterns of various popular network-based services and applications. Through broad numerical experiments, we show how the proposed approach outperforms the reference ones in different traffic profiles. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel approach to improving speech recognition performance by combining spectrogram images with extracted formant frequency data within a dual input neural network framework. While spectrograms are widely used in speech recognition due to their ability to capture time, frequency, and amplitude information, they may not always effectively highlight the subtle characteristics of formant patterns, especially in low resolution images. To address this, we introduce a hybrid model that integrates spectrogram images with formant parameters derived using the linear predictive coding method. The model utilizes parallel convolutional neural network processing spectrogram images and the other handling time series formant data. Outputs are then concatenated and further processed through fully connected layers. This double channel design enables the network to take advantage of complementary information from both spectral and parametric speech features, leading to improved recognition accuracy. The model is trained and evaluated using the Google Speech Commands dataset, achieving superior results compared to traditional KNN classifiers, formant-only models, and standard spectrogram-based CNNs. The proposed method achieves a 93% recognition accuracy, outperforming conventional approaches and demonstrating the potential of formant-augmented neural networks for more robust speech recognition tasks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Growing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in Polish electricity system has motivated the Polish government to make changes in the law. Those changes decrease the economic profit of using photovoltaic power plants, but incentivize the use of hybrid systems equipped with batteries. In this paper, the state-of-the-art battery management system, which maximizes self-consumption has been compared to our own time-based proposal, which is focused on economic profit. We used real-life measurements from a 6kWp residential power plant to compare both battery management systems. The results show that controlling batteries with our model allows us to save more money. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
