Dislocation of an artificial hip joint is one of the most serious problems for Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). In order to analyze the phenomenon of the artificial hip joint dislocation, a hip joint simulator has been developed. Although the hip joint motion and the hip joint contact force (the resultant muscle force around muscles of hip joint and the floor reaction force) during the daily life motion must be realized by the simulator, the resultant muscle force around hip joint can not be prepared easily. In this paper, a method to estimate the resultant muscle force around hip joint based on EMG (electromyogram) signals is proposed. Since the proposed estimation method requires only the measurement of EMG signals, the resultant muscle force can be estimated easily. The effectiveness of the proposed estimation method was evaluated by performing the experiments.

Question answering generally generates the answer to the question by extracting the named entity from the sentences containing the answer to the question from information sources. However, it is not always true that a named entity is an answer to the question. So we propose a method for generating the answer sentence using statistical machine translation. The probability models are constructed by learning from enormous samples of the set of question sentence, extracted sentence, and answer sentence. The question sentence and the sentence extracted by the question answering from information source are regarded as an input of machine translation. They are translated to a suitable answer sentence to the question. In this paper, we attempted to apply our method to several simple types questions that can also be answered by the named entity extraction.

In recent years, readings on text files become popular. We can use full-text search while we read text-files. However, full-text search has some weak points for supporting readings. We propose to introduce question-answering to readings of novels on text-files to avoid these problems and make a comfortable support system for readings of novels. We also propose several additional functions such as "Who? Function" and "Spoiler preventer". We checked the act of our system with various examples to confirm that our system works correctly in actual reading scenes. We also examined the computational complexity of the system theoretically and experimentally, and found our proposed method does not take a long time so that the user will not feel unpleasant.

A finite element model of piezoelectric fiber transducers bonded to an aluminum plate is used to study planar guided waves inspection of a plate. It has been shown that a linear combination of in-plane and out of plane strains matches the transducer obtained voltage better than it does displacements. A combination of infinite elements and viscous surface tractions were employed to minimize unwanted boundary reflections to enable study of sensor sensitivity to small defects. Finally, design of a piecewise sensing element has led to successfully defining the location of a crack that is only 1.5% the length of the transducer.

Fundamental Shear Horizontal (SH0) guided waves have been simulated using finite element software in order to locate a crack in a plate structure. Long but narrow piezoelectric fiber composite strips have been considered as transducers to excite and receive SH guided waves. A segmented transducer, which enables piecewise sensing, has been shown by finite element analysis to be capable of locating a tiny through-thickness crack. The main benefits are that SH waves could be used to inspect fluid loaded structures and that it is possible to detect a crack oriented parallel to the wave vector.
