Nowadays, digital images can be easily obtained, recorded and processed in accordance with the widespread use of digital cameras and personal computers. There is an image enhancement as one of most general image processing techniques. In the image enhancement, unsharp masking (UM) has been used widely because its algorithm is very simple and can produce good results. However, over-enhancement occurs in edge parts of the image. Additionally UM also is easy to generate artifacts such as jaggy and halo. To cope with these problems, the authors proposed the selective UM method based on the edge-preserved smoothing filter. However, the image quality obtained by our method depends on values of the enhancement parameters, and their optimal values vary according to user's liking. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement system considering the user's liking by using an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA). In the proposed system, the IGA optimizes the parameters of the image enhancement. Further, a new genetic operation is introduced in order to achieve the effective search in the IGA of the proposed system. Through the experiments using some images, the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified.

Small scale wind turbines can be used in indoor facilities that are mainly either stand-alone or grid-connected systems. With grid contiguous turbines, the output from the wind turbine is directly connected to the existing mains electricity supply. For this purpose Improved Honey Bee Mating Optimization (IHBMO) technique is considered as an optimization algorithm to power system. Also the wind farm in form of doubly fed induction generator penetrating is formulated into a power system. Several technical issues arise with the close spacing of multiple wind turbines in a wind farm, individually one with a severely limited spatial footprint. Wake effect is one of the most important agents under consideration that can lead to fluctuations in the output power of a wind farm and significantly decrease its energy production. Thus it is desired to determine optimal positions for installing multiple wind turbines. In this paper we minimize the fuel cost and emission of thermal units simultaneously by changing the location and varying the sizes of wind farm. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our propose algorithm.

As an application to the nanoemitter, we investigated the nanofabrication of diamond-like carbon (DLC)-dot arrays by room-temperature curing imprint-liftoff (RTCIL) method using aluminum mask. The DLC film which has excellent properties similar to diamond properties was used as the patterning material. A polished glass like carbon (GC) was used as a mold material. The polysiloxane in the state of sticky liquid at room temperature and stable in air exhibits a negative-exposure characteristics. Therefore, the polysiloxane was used as electron beam (EB) resist and oxide mask material in EB lithography, and also used as RTC-imprint resist material. An aluminum was used as oxide metal mask material of liftoff. We have fabricated the GC mold of dot arrays with 5 μm-square and 500 nm-height. We carried out the RTCIL process using the GC mold under the following optimum imprint conditions: 0.5 MPa-imprinting pressure and 5 min- holding time. Aluminum film on the imprinted polysiloxane was prepared by vacuum evaporation method and its thickness is 20 nm. Finally, the polysiloxane patterns were removed with acetone and aluminum mask patterns were fabricated. We found that the maximum etching selectivity of aluminum film against DLC film was as high as 35, which was obtained under an ion energy of 400 eV. Then we processed the patterned aluminum on DLC film with an ECR oxygen ion shower. We fabricated DLC-dot arrays with 5 μm-square and 400 nm-height with an aspect ratio of 0.08. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

The main point of this paper is to present a time domain strategy for drug dosage to treat psychiatric disorders. A time domain model of emotion is obtained from an extension of a recently developed fractional nonlinear dynamic model of happiness. First, the Fractional Optimal control law for incommensurate multi state systems is obtained. It will be then applied as an optimal drug administration procedure in the line of psychiatric disorders treatment. Results of this paper show that optimal control scheme is a proper approach to face the difficulties of analysis and control the incommensurate systems. It can be also clearly seen from the simulation results that this approach is very effective in the case that control methods are used as treatment techniques.

In contrast to traditional articulated robots, continuum robots do not have any joints. The backbone of these robots can be bent, twisted and stretched by environmental and actuation forces. A group of continuum robotic arms use tendon-driven actuation systems. In this group, the shape of robot backbone can be controlled by pulling the tendons. Generally, exact modeling of the forces and moments produced by tendon-driven systems has no closed form solution. However, for a simplified case where the backbone shape is a planar curve with a constant curvature, some closed-form solutions have been introduced. Such solutions are valuable, especially in control applications where Jacobian matrices must be calculated. For exact modeling of elastic rods in spatial deformations, constant curvature models are not accurate. In such cases, the theory of Cosserat rod can be used for backbone modeling. Continuum robots usually consist of an elastic rod as the backbone and an actuation system. The effects of the actuation systems must be included to the model of Cosserat rod. The effects of the actuation systems are more complicated, when the tendon passages are not parallel to the backbone. In this paper, a model for continuum robotic arms is presented, which considers both, the elastic backbone and the effects of the actuation system. Furthermore, the tendons can twist around the backbone, in an arbitrary passage. The presented model is more compact than other solutions, and will be validated in a case study, by comparison with numerical results obtained from existing models.

In some modeling and control problems, especially in robotics, determination of orientation of a rotating body or frame requires slow and time taking numerical calculations. In some cases, such as for continuum robots, these time-taking calculations are an impediment to real-time control. The common approaches for orientation determination, such as Euler angles or Euler parameters, are beneficial when generalized coordinates are needed. Otherwise, these approaches require some time-taking equations for calculation of the rotation matrix (direction cosine matrix). Another method is to calculate the rotation matrix directly, based on the angular velocity. Although this method is very fast, it is numerically unstable, because of accumulation of some numerical errors. In this paper, an approach is introduced that cancels these errors with the least numerical efforts, and provides high accuracies. The application and importance of this approach is studied and discussed in the case of modeling and control of continuum robotic arms, as an instance. The proposed methods are used to model a spring, as a case study. The obtained results are validated by analytic data, and are compared to the results obtained by other methods.

Continuum robots do not have any joint in contrast to traditional articulated robots. Instead, these robots can bend, twist and stretch their backbone, to shape desired configurations and end-effector position. Therefore, exact modeling of these robots is a challenging problem, particularly in spatial deformations. This paper suggests identification of some mechanical characteristics of the backbone of continuum robots, to achieve accurate results. The importance of identification of characteristics, such as undeformed shape and modulus of elasticity, will be discussed. Then, some methods to identify these characteristics are presented. Theory of Cosserat Rod will be introduced and used for modeling continuum robotic arms in this paper. Finally, the proposed approach is used for a given robot, and the model obtained based on the identified parameters will be validated by experimental results.

The Iterative Learning control (ILC) problem in which tracking is only required at a subset of isolated time points along the trial duration has recently gained significant attention since it addresses the practical needs of many *** paper extends the framework by embedding simultaneous iterative convergence of subsets of outputs to reference trajectories on subintervals. This enables it to tackle tasks which mix 'point to point' movements with linear tracking requirements, which substantially broadens the application domain (e.g. to include automation tasks which include welding or cutting movements, or human motion control where the movement is restricted by the task to straight line and/or planar segments). A solution to the problem is presented in the framework of Norm Optimal ILC (NOILC), providing well-defined convergence properties, design guidelines and supporting experimental results. © IFAC.
