During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust H∞ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller’s effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction. © 2024 IEEE.

Metallic subtractive process planning is challenging. It requires a blend of expert knowledge, experience, and established manufacturing methods. Decision-making in this domain is multifaceted and complex, and this includes the need to satisfy multiple conflicting demands faced by the manufacturing sector today. However, with the evolving landscape of manufacturing, combined with increased adoptions of digital technologies, the traditional rules of thumb are becoming obsolete. In response, this research investigated these decision-making processes within a subset of the digital framework for subtractive process planning. In particular, it has demonstrated that an advanced open-source optimisation tool (Liger) could be integrated with commercial industrial software and applied to a machining case study. The integrated software intelligently executed and automated simulations using advanced optimisation techniques. The outputs are a range of optimised solutions that support manufacturing engineers' decision-making. One of the major benefits of the open-source software is that it provides an intuitive to use interface suitable for the non-expert in optimisation, offers a varied range of state-of-the-art multi-objective optimisation algorithms, and is capable of incorporating many different third-party types of software, models and simulations. In this paper, the Liger software has been applied to a simple case study to find the best feedrate and depths of cut that simultaneously minimise the cutting force and the time it takes to complete the machining process. The case study demonstrates proof-of-principle results that the optimisation software can be implemented in a wider process planning context with additional digital manufacturing simulation models. © 2024 The Authors.

In recent decades, digital signages have been widely used. Specifically, digital signages that have a purpose of either providing information or advertising, it is important to direct people’s attention toward that information. Conventionally, some approaches to attract viewer’s attention include using animation and audible information such as playing background music or a flashing a catchphrase. However, language information has not been implemented in these approaches. In this study, we propose a method to call out a specific person to the front of a digital signage by using color images and depth information. By calling out a specific person by using this method, it is expected for this person to have an awareness that they are a target intended by a digital signage. In this study, we conducted experiments that use utterances based on a person’s position, distance from a digital signage, clothing colors, or a pair of two features. Based on the study results, we confirm that a pair of features, that is, clothing color and depth, is the most effective to call out a specific person to the front of a digital signage

Termites have always been one of the major hidden dangers to the operational safety of dams. Traditional detection methods such as manual inspection and termite baiting have limitations in terms of efficiency and accuracy. To solve the problems, paper proposes a termite nest detection method based on ground penetrating radar (GPR) and deep learning. First, the simulated GPR data are generated using gprMax software, and the real data are collected using a GPR at several dams. Subsequently, the YOLOv8 deep neural network is employed for termite nest recognition in GPR images. The experimental results show that the proposed model can achieve the mean average precision (mAP) of 0.96 and a detection speed of 53.76 frames per second (FPS). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work, we propose a design guideline of teleoperation support system for working robots in radiation narrow environments. The proposed guideline is discussed to configure the robot system with as few sensors as possible because of decreasing the sensor failure risk by high radiation. This paper describes discussion results of the guideline candidate, focusing on relationship between the required information for robot teleoperation and number of sensors that consists of the support system. Additionally, we present some support systems that were developed for an inspection or an investigation of nuclear power plants as development cases. As a result of the guideline calculation for each development cases, we confirmed that the proposed guideline increases as the required radiation tolerance is high, and the support system is classified by the guideline. In case that the torelance is more than 200 Gy, available sensors are limited, and a sensor-saving configuration is adopted to decrease the robot failur risk by using in combination with a sensor for the robot operation.

This paper focuses on formulating and solving the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling carried out in a system composed of a refinery and a marine terminal. The main challenge lies in coordinating the decisions made at both facilities and, at the same time, dealing with the uncertainties inherent in this activity. To tackle this problem, we present a continuous-time mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) formulation. Furthermore, uncertainty in the ship arrival times is considered through a two-stage stochastic programming approach. Finally, the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) risk measure is employed to weigh the risk of having high costs relative to the worst scenarios. In this way, the proposed model is capable of supporting the decision-making process under uncertainty in an integral way.

Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed. © 2024 IEEE.

The use of robotics in manufacturing is rapidly growing. One promising application in particular is the use of robots as machining platforms. Robotic machining offers many advantages such as large operating envelopes, flexibility in operations and low installation and running costs. Robotic machining platforms much like computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools are commanded by numerical controllers (NCs) using the well established G-code part programming language (ISO-6983). Toolpaths are defined in the work piece coordinate system (WCS) as a series of discrete tool centre point (TCP) positions and tool orientations. The role of the NC is to generate smooth feed drive or robot joint commands such that the tool or end effector travels along the commanded toolpath whilst satisfying TCP position and orientation tolerances and robot/machine tool kinematic constraints. Interpolating tool orientations directly in the WCS requires complex real-time spherical interpolation computations. Overcoming this challenge, this paper introduces a C4 continuous tool path trajectory generation method for 6DOF motion. The tool centre point position is smoothed in the WCS, however, the tool orientation is smoothed directly in the rotary coordinate system without the requirement for spherical interpolation. The interpolated tool orientation trajectory follows the path of the great circle arc using the modified Haversine method eliminating non-linear interpolation errors present in linear interpolation of rotary axis positions (machine coordinate system interpolation). The proposed method is validated by simulation of a 6DOF robotic manipulator. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
