Many persons suffer from severe disabilities such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by neurological disorders. Such kinds of disabilities bring various restrictions to communication and circumstance in their daily life. A simple communication method using neuro-biological signal will be effective and helpful to enhance their life quality. In this study, a simple on-off communication method using electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrooculogram (EOG) was proposed. In case of EEG, parameters for linear regressive equation were selected by AIC. The results showed that the accuracy was extremely high with both communication methods.

In this paper, we present several considerations centered around the data-driven system approaches. We briefly explore three main issues: the evolving relationship between off-line and on-line data processing methods, the complementary relationship between the data-driven and model-based methods, and the perspectives of data-driven system approaches. Instead of offering solutions to data-driven system problems, which is impossible at the present level of knowledge and research, in this article we aim at categorizing and classifying open problems, exploring possible directions that may offer alternatives or potentials for the four key fields of interests: control, decision making, scheduling, and fault diagnosis.

Water and energy are indispensable for human life. Fossil fuels such as oil and coal are usually used for power generation. However, the environment impact of these thermal power generation is relatively large. Moreover, the shortage of water caused by a population increase and global warming also becomes serial problem. In order to solve these energy and water problems at the same time, an integrated plant of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) system and desalination system has been developed. Sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is one of serious sleep disorders. EEG arousals due to the apnea hypopnea are frequently appeared in polysomnographic (PSG) record in patients with SAHS. In this study, the method for detecting EEG arousals and apnea interval in PSG record was proposed for supporting visual inspection to classify respiratory levels and EEG arousals. Two threshold values were established for classify the sleep apnea conditions and threshold values for detecting FFG arousals were then determined according to the results of apnea interval detection. Proposed automatic detection method will be an effective for diagnosis support system.

This paper describes the research activities at the Laboratory for controlsystems and Automation (LCA) which is a section of the Production department of Korea advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). LCA's research activities are focused on providing fundamental technologies to cope with the current trends in manufacturing automation. The R & D activities at the laboratory cover diverse areas. The research activities at the laboratory are classified into three sections—robotics and automation, fluid servo control, and manufacturing process control. Detailed explanations are given here on robotics and its application to automation. Environmental issues are getting widespread international attention. The damage to the plant is immeasurable, too. For monitoring the vegetation conditions, a non-destructive, simplified and low-cost chlorophyll fluorometer was developed. Pulse amplification modulation method and control using programmable logic controller has been employed for that purpose. By measuring the fluorescence from spinach leaf, the performance of the system was checked. It was found that the system was provided empirical data to support theory.

To maintain stable operation of semiconductor fabrication lines, statistical process control (SPC) methods are recognized to be effective. However, in semiconductor fabrication lines, there exist a huge number of process state signals to be monitored, and these signals contain both normally and non-normally distributed data. Therefore, if we try to apply SPC methods to those signals, we need one which satisfies three requirements: 1) It can deal with both normally distributed data, and non-normally distributed data, 2) It can be set up automatically, 3) It can be easily understood by engineers and technicians. In this paper, we propose a new SPC method which satisfies these three requirements at the same time. This method uses similar rules to the Shewhart chart, but can deal with non-normally distributed data by introducing “effective standard deviations”. Usefulness of this method is demonstrated by comparing false alarm ratios to that of the Shewhart chart method. In the demonstration, we use various kinds of artificially generated data, and real data observed in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process tool in a semiconductor fabrication line.

The onset detection of muscle activation is an essential issue in electromyogram (EMG) control. In this paper, a novel approach based on EMG power with automatic adaptive threshold is proposed to address this issue. The purpose is to develop an effective EMG-controlled meal assistance robot. Taking into account the individual difference such as contraction power and resting power, the threshold of onset detection is set with respect to the latest EMG signal. The results show the method is able to adjust automatically to avoid false alarms, and works well when the contraction power varies. Implementation of this EMG-controlled meal assistance robot may provide limb-deficient patients with an effective and comfortable human-machine assistance interface.

This paper proposes a method of constructing weak control-Lyapunov functions for nonlinear systems by introducing a topological geometric assumption called a Morse-Smale system. A Lyapunov function is one of the most important tools to study stability and stabilization of nonlinear systems. However, a general way of finding Lyapunov functions has not been found yet. First, we confirm there is a weak Lyapunov function for Morse-Smale systems. Next, we define the escapability for singular structures of the weak Lyapunov function. If all singular structures are escapable, then the Morse-Smale system is a globally asymptotically stabilizable one. Finally, we present the method of constructing a set of weak control-Lyapunov functions to achieve global stabilization. The method is described in terms of a recursive sequence of singular structures. We call the sequence a weak Lyapunov filtration.
