In this paper, a simulation model of a spray flash desalination system is proposed. In the spray flash desalination system, the freshwater is made from the evaporation-condensation process, i.e., evaporation of warm surface seawater in a flash chamber and condensation of the generated vapor by deep cool seawater. A simulation model of the spray flash desalination system is constructed by using physical relations such as the energy conservation law and the mass conservation law. Simulation results of the proposed simulation model are compared with the experimental results of an experimental plant of the splay flash desalination system, and it shows the effectiveness of the proposed simulation model.

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite images have been widely used in environmental and land cover monitoring. Before delivering to the consumers, NOAA images need to be accurately transformed from image into map. This paper proposes a geometric correction method that corrects the errors caused by this transformation. In this method, the errors are corrected in image coordinate system before the image is transformed into map coordinate system. First, the elevation errors are corrected based on an elevation database. This elevation database is also used to divide data into flat and rough blocks. Next, GCP (Ground control Point) template matching is applied to specify the residual errors for the blocks that match GCP templates. In order to increase the number of GCP templates, more GCP templates are generated based on the feature of the coastline. The NOAA images from various receiving stations are also referred to make the matching result better. From the residual errors of the blocks which match GCP templates, the residual errors of other flat and rough blocks are calculated by using affine and Radial Basis Function transform respectively. Finally, data is transformed from image into map. With the proposed method, residual errors are corrected more accurately;consequently, the correction results are considerably improved.

Recently we develop two kinds of approaches, that is, the super-exponential method (SEM) and the eigenvector method (EVM), of which both can achieve the blind deconvolution for MIMO-IIR systems. It is shown that these methods are closely related each other. Based on this fact, we propose a new SEM incorporated with the EVM. Simulation results will be presented for showing the validity of the proposed method.

This paper introduced an expert knowledge-based automatic sleep stage determination system working on statistical signal processing. The main methods included two processes. One was expert knowledge base construction, which was developed in terms of probability density functions (pdfs) of parameters for each sleep stage. Here, the visual inspection by a clinician was utilized rather than stage scoring criteria for expert knowledge base construction. Another was multi-valued decision making of sleep stages, where stages were determined automatically according to the conditional probabilities. Totally, four subjects were participated, They are patients from Toranomon hospital, Japan. The automatic sleep stage determination results showed close agreements with the visual inspection in stage awake, light sleep stages and deep sleep stages. The constructed expert knowledge base reflected the distributions of characteristic parameters corresponding to each stage. The proposed method may have strong performance to be an assistant tool for clinicians enabling further inspection of sleep disorder cases.

In this paper, we have applied the analysis method for the robot manipulators to the evaluation of the manipulation ability of the human upper limb. The set of maximum hand force based on individual's muscular power characteristics were expressed in the six-dimensional convex polyhedron (Manipulating Force Polyhedron). The spatial characteristic of the manipulation ability of the upper limb in three-dimensional space was clarified by the visualization of the six-dimensional convex polyhedron using a new vertex search algorithm. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we compared manipulating force polyhedron with measured maximum hand force. The manipulating force polyhedron was calculated from measured maximum joint torque of the upper limb depending on joint angle and rotation direction. Our evaluation method will be useful not only for the evaluation of the manipulation ability of the upper limb but also for the development of equipment based on individual's muscular power characteristics.

In this paper, we analyze a user-friendliness of wheelchair propulsion by using a dynamic index of the driving force. The index explains how much margin the user can take in joint moments to his maximum ability during wheelchair propulsion, and is expressed by the dynamic manipulating force ellipsoid (DMFE). The DMFE is illustrated from the measured values of maximum generated moments at the user's upper limb joints, and is used to understand quantitatively the margin of the user's ability for wheelchair propulsion. Based on the index, we have also proposed the concept of the driving force contribution figure (DFCF) to clarify how efficient the user accomplishes the wheelchair propulsion. The DFCF expresses the direction cosine of generated force on the handrim to the tangential direction. If the DFCF takes large value along the driving force direction, it means the applied force acts efficiently for wheelchair propulsion. In order to show the effectiveness of DMFE and DFGF, we measured the driving motion of the upper limb, hand force applied to the handrim, and the individual's muscular power characteristics for eight experienced wheelchair users. From the experimental data, it is shown that the users start driving the handrim at such posture where it is difficult to generate required hand force to drive the wheelchair. It is also shown that the user are driving the wheelchair taking the load of the upper limb and the efficiency of the wheelchair propulsion into consideration.
