With increased wind power penetration in modern power systems, wind plants are required to provide frequency support similar to conventional plants. However, for the existing frequency regulation scheme of wind turbines, the control gains in the auxiliary frequency controller are difficult to set because of the compromise of the frequency regulation performance and the stable operation of wind turbines, especially when the wind speed remains variable. This paper proposes a novel frequency regulation scheme (FRS) for de-loaded wind turbines. Instead of an auxiliary frequency controller, frequency support is provided by modifying the parametrized power versus rotor speed (Pw-ωr) curve, including the inertia power versus rotor speed curve and the droop power versus rotor speed curve. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that it does not contain any control gains and generally adapts to different wind speeds. Further, the proposed scheme can work for the whole section of wind speed without wind speed measurement information. The compared simulation results demonstrate the scheme improves the system frequency response while ensuring the stable operation of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs)-based variable-speed wind turbines (VSWTs) under various wind conditions. We constructed a frequently updated, near-real-time global power generation dataset: Carbon Monitor-Power since January, 2016 at national levels with near-global coverage and hourly-to-daily time resolution. The data presented here are collected from 37 countries across all continents for eight source groups, including three types of fossil sources (coal, gas, and oil), nuclear energy and four groups of renewable energy sources (solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and other renewables including biomass, geothermal, etc.). The global near-real-time power dataset shows the dynamics of the global power system, including its hourly, daily, weekly and seasonal patterns as influenced by daily periodical activities, weekends, seasonal cycles, regular and irregular events (i.e., holidays) and extreme events (i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic). The Carbon Monitor-Power dataset reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic caused strong disruptions in some countries (i.e., China and India), leading to a temporary or long-lasting shift to low carbon intensity, while it had only little impact in some other countries (i.e., Australia). In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics of the biological system modeled by the fractional incommensurate order Van der Pol equations are investigated. The stability of the proposed fractional non-autonomous system is analyzed by varying both the fractional order derivative and system parameters. Moreover, very interesting phenomena such as symmetry, multi-stability and coexistence of attractors are discovered in the considered biological system. Numerical simulations are performed by considering the Caputo fractional derivative and results are reported by means of bifurcation diagrams, computation of the largest Lyapunov exponent, phase portraits in 2D and 3D projections.

Two new architectures of the third-order low-pass filters (LPF) based on differential (Op-Amp) and differential difference amplifiers (DDA) with a paraphase output are compared. This architectures designed for practical use as anti-aliasing filters in analog-to-digital converters of sensor signals of various physical quantities. The basic equations of the developed LPF modifications that make possible to perform their parametric synthesis are given. The computer simulation results are presented, which show that the LPFs under consideration provide the guaranteed frequency response (FR) attenuation outside the bandwidth being implemented on Op-Amps by Analog Device (AD8132) and Texas Instruments (THS4131). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The article studies algorithms synthesis of a multiply connected system for controlling non-affine plants, the state variables of which are not available for direct measurement. It is shown that the decentralized control law constructed on the basis of the hyperstability criterion eliminates the influence of non-linearities and compensates external and parametric perturbations in the tracking multiply connected system with the required accuracy.

According to the theory of coordinated reset (CR) stimulation, multifocal bursts of stimuli delivered in a random order with a specific interval may reduce the resonance power of the oscillatory generator in the epicenter. We develop a noninvasive coordinated multifocal burst stimulation (COMBS) with three repetitive transcranial stimulation machines based on CR theory to modulate the target frequency in the primary motor cortex and to assess its effect on motor cortical excitability in separate experiments. Electroencephalography and electromyography were recorded in 16 healthy participants during a finger-tapping task, both before and after the intervention. The resting oscillatory power at the targeted frequency was not changed by COMBS. α-Band power was increased in both preparation and movement stages and the low β-band power was increased in the movement stage of the finger tapping task. The extent of low β-band event-related desynchronization was reduced by COMBS. There were no changes in reaction time, but there was a trend for a reduced error rate after COMBS. In another 14 healthy participants, there were no significant changes in cortical excitability before and after COMBS measured by rest motor threshold, short interval intracortical inhibition, short interval intracortical facilitation, and cortical silent period. The result indicates that COMBS may modify the cortical oscillatory power and its perturbation within specific movement stage. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to apply coordinated reset (CR) neuromodulation to the motor cortex with three repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) stimulators to assess its effect on cortical oscillation. The results revealed enhancement of α-band power specifically in preparation and movement stages and low β-band power in the movement stage of a motor task. It postulated that CR stimulation may modify the motor cortical oscillation in the specific movement stages.

This manuscript presents an algorithm for individual Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cell state of charge (SOC) estimation when multiple cells are connected in parallel, using only terminal voltage and total current measurements. For battery packs consisting of thousands of cells, it is desirable to estimate individual SOCs by only monitoring the total current in order to reduce sensing cost. Mathematically, series connected cells yield dynamics given by ordinary differential equations under classical full voltage sensing. In contrast, parallel connected cells are evidently more challenging because the dynamics are governed by a nonlinear descriptor system, including differential equations and algebraic equations arising from voltage and current balance across cells. This paper designs and analyzes an observer with linear output error injection, where the individual cell SOCs and local currents are locally observable from the total current and voltage measurements. The asymptotic convergence of differential and algebraic states is established by considering local Lipschitz continuity property of system nonlinearities. Simulation results on LiNiMnCoO_2/Graphite (NMC) cells illustrate convergence for SOCs, local currents, and terminal voltage.

It is a matter of fact that Europe is facing more and more crucial challenges regarding health and social care due to the demographic change and the current economic context. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has stressed this situation even further, thus highlighting the need for taking action. Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies come as a viable approach to help facing these challenges, thanks to the high potential they have in enabling remote care and support. Broadly speaking, AAL can be referred to as the use of innovative and advanced Information and Communication Technologies to create supportive, inclusive and empowering applications and environments that enable older, impaired or frail people to live independently and stay active longer in society. AAL capitalizes on the growing pervasiveness and effectiveness of sensing and computing facilities to supply the persons in need with smart assistance, by responding to their necessities of autonomy, independence, comfort, security and safety. The application scenarios addressed by AAL are complex, due to the inherent heterogeneity of the end-user population, their living arrangements, and their physical conditions or impairment. Despite aiming at diverse goals, AAL systems should share some common characteristics. They are designed to provide support in daily life in an invisible, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. Moreover, they are conceived to be intelligent, to be able to learn and adapt to the requirements and requests of the assisted people, and to synchronise with their specific needs. Nevertheless, to ensure the uptake of AAL in society, potential users must be willing to use AAL applications and to integrate them in their daily environments and lives. In this respect, video- and audio-based AAL applications have several advantages, in terms of unobtrusiveness and information richness. The Grid voltage Modulated Direct Power control (GVM-DPC) for Voltage Source Converter (VSC) is a recently proposed superior control strategies which features several advantages such as fast power reference tracking, simple structure, no need to use synchronizing techniques, strong robustness and so on. In this paper, an improved Dual Grid Voltage Modulated Direct Power control (D-GVM-DPC) strategies for unbalanced grid voltage condition is proposed and compared with regular voltage oriented dual PI control techniques. The idea of this improvement is to separately control the positive and negative sequence power components based on the original GVM-DPC controller. The simulation results shows that the proposed strategy is superior to the dual current control schemes been used with voltage oriented control strategy. © 2019 IEEE.

Development of curriculum in the universities, and search of good-skilled experts to evaluate project education results consume large amounts of time for faculty members. The article proposes a universal framework that facilitates this task by automating the process of finding companies that can provide such experts. The proposed approach is characterized by a high degree of automation and formalization, because it uses the data of financial statements of companies in a given industry in its work. Thanks to the use of statistical data and methods, the objectivity and reliability of the search for experts increases. As data source uses the data set “Accounting (financial) statements of enterprises and organizations for 2018” provided by Rosstat. The proposed approach was successfully tested in the course of attracting experts to evaluate the results of a design workshop for students of the Ural Federal University in 2019. During testing, the top 40 IT companies of the Sverdlovsk region were selected. From the 40 organizations, 7 companies agreed to respond to the proposal, which determined to 17.5% of the sample. At the same time, 19 experts were sent from this organizations, which amounted to 65.5 % of all exerts who agreed to participate in the event. Thus, the proposed approach can significantly expand the composition of the expert base and attract experts based on a strictly formalized, objective approach.
